To not want to use a washing up bowl?

Dh and I have been together for a good few years now and he knew that I absolutely hate washing up bowls when we met.

His parents used to have one and I used to do the washing up when we visited and it was horrible. Warm, greasy water with little bits floating in it swirling around the fingers Confused he used to say "just change the water", but I'd end up changing it constantly and it was just wasteful.

I like to wash up under running water which goes straight down the plug hole. You get to rinse the dishes and there's no horrible little bits.

I don't like the bottoms of bowls either as they seem to get greasy and it ends up as yet another thing to have to clean.

He is mentioning getting a bowl again. I do most of the washing up. We have no room for a dishwasher.

I think some things need to soak a bit. We have a half sink which is good for rinsing. I don't like to fill the sink up without a bowl because you can get water sloshing through the yucky mouldy overflow grate. But we tend to put stuff in the dishwasher after the worse is off anyway. The washing up bowl is then cleaned if there is any grease.

There's only one kind of water that comes out of the taps in this country. It's drinking water by default.

The only grey water that's in this house is dh's bath water and I'm not rinsing the dishes with that Shock

I wash up under a running tap. I'm a bit surprised at people who think this means using more water rather than less, though I suppose it depends on how much you have to wash. You people do know that showering use less water than bathing, don't you?

Bathing, that's another filthy habit Grin

Huh?

What other water do you have in which to wash dishes, Travelin?

Dishwashers - plumbed in to the same source of water, as is the bath and the shower and the loo.

Or do you have a cat/dog and they lick your plates clean?

My FIL has a system- scrape plates, rinse everything then wash up in soapy water. Unfortunately his eye sight is going and he misses quite a bit of grime. I scrape and rinse as necessary then use scalding hot water (ex-waitress- asbestos hands).

YANBU OP, I completely agree with you. I only wash up under running water, I just feel that washing up bowls are really unhygienic. I do use my dishwasher for anything that can go in there though!

Last time I washed up (we have dishwasher) I put fairy on sponge, picked a plate at a time and scrubbed with sponge, dropped in sink. No water in sink. Had pile of soapy plates. Started running water with no plug, and rinsed plates. I might be very odd though.

Oh and showering versus baths - I use less water in the bath with the time I takes me to comb conditioner through my hair etc...

Same for getting off burnt on residue from my pans. (Fond of cooking dryish curries with well toasted spices).

With you totally OP. If he wants a bowl let him buy one and it can stay in the cupboard under the sink. He'll soon get fed up with dragging it out to use it.

Soak dishes in sink of hot soapy water, empty sink and remove dishes from sink.
Refill sink with fresh hot soapy water, wash dishes, rinse in running water in little sink.
Place on clean draining board.

Definitely no washing up bowls and always a clean draining board as dh will put clean dishes on a filthy draining board and not even notice.... Shock

I think it's incredibly wasteful to wash under running water. Who knew that washing up bowls could divide us so?? Grin

How is it wasteful to wash up under running water when you're running the tap to fill perhaps several bowls up?

I do the same as Mini. I don't leave the water running or use a washing up bowl. Change the sponge frequently. Doesn't use much water at all.

I'm def with you. We used a washing up bowl for the first few years of marriage (because our parents did) and then realised that like you, we didn't like them. We wash up with one of those scourers on a stick filled with washing up liquid. I guess we do use more water that way but we do not have a constantly running tap.

I don't care if you use a washing up bowl or not, the big issue is do you rinse properly? Have come across far too many people who don't. Shock

What a ridiculous thread. Only on MN have I seen this hatred of washing up bowls.

hiddenhome you clearly have no idea about how to wash up using a bowl. First of all you scrape all the debris off the plates into the bin. Then you give them a quick rinse under a running tap. You then wash them in hot soapy water, then rinse if you feel the need to.

Everyone I know uses a washing up bowl. I do as I have a composite granite sink and don't wish to smash my wine glasses or crockery.

I used to use one but then had to chuck it because someone was sick in it. Now I just use the sink. Is there any reason I shouldnt?

"How do you get past all the little crumbs and 'bits' and grease touching your skin? Yuck!"

You mean the leftover scraps of food which were cooked together with everything you just ate for dinner? Which you put in your mouth and is now in your stomach?

Really not an issue.
