To not want to use a washing up bowl?

Dh and I have been together for a good few years now and he knew that I absolutely hate washing up bowls when we met.

His parents used to have one and I used to do the washing up when we visited and it was horrible. Warm, greasy water with little bits floating in it swirling around the fingers he used to say "just change the water", but I'd end up changing it constantly and it was just wasteful.

I like to wash up under running water which goes straight down the plug hole. You get to rinse the dishes and there's no horrible little bits.

I don't like the bottoms of bowls either as they seem to get greasy and it ends up as yet another thing to have to clean.

He is mentioning getting a bowl again. I do most of the washing up. We have no room for a dishwasher.

They only get 'furry' underneath if you are vile and don't clean it and your sink.

I hate dishwashers. Washing up bowl and hot soapy water for my scraped and pre-rinsed dishes. No problem and not 'rank' at all. People need to get a bit of grip when talking about how other people wash their dishes if you ask me..

Washing up bowls inside the sink was one of the things that confused me when I first came to the UK. Can someone explain what the point is anyway?

I am a tap runner and it drives my OH batty. So much so that he does 99% of the washing up now ha ha my cunning plan worked

He fills the sink.

We don't have a washing up bowl. Well we do but it's not used for washing up.

tripletrouble, if you have a big sink but only a single one, a small bowl means you don't have to fill the whole width of the sink to wash a few things, and you can pour away waste liquid down the side of the bowl as you go. I hate living without a washing up bowl. We had a double sink growing up but I still don't necessarily want to use a whole sink space for small kitchen tasks.

I use the bowl, dh hates the bowl, but as he only washes up once in a blue moon I win.
I have issues with the feel of pots scraping the bottom of the sink, it sets my teeth on edge.

DH and I had a constant battle over the use (I do), or not (he doesn't), of a washing up bowl for about 15 years . Then he bought a dishwasher . I still have the bowl .

I find leaving the water in the washing up bowl vile , possibly due to living with MIL who did this and used to wash glasses in dirty plate and cutlery water and I'm a bit of a cleanliness weirdo anyway. She used to moan when I re-cleaned my cup before I used it. No one could understand the skankiness of it all. I do think it's OK if you have an order but not in my house . Still clean my stuff wherever I am regardless and I don't care if people got an issue , I don't like seeing last nights dinner swimming in my drink

Clearly the solution is for your DH to do the washing up, hiddenhome.

YABU btw, as is everybody who lets lovely drinking wanter run down the plug hole for washing some dishes which are only 'dirty' from food

Oh, and cold/lukewarm washing up water is rank - as are wet cloths left in the sink

And YANBU. I absolutely agree. There's not enough SPACE and it gets greasy and gross and why don't people RINSE things after scrubbing them in filthy water?! Even if it's not filthy it's BUBBLY and your plates will have bubble residue on them.

No. And it's not a waste of water; the tap's not constants going. We use a scrubber you fill up with washing up liquid. Rinse everything with HOT water, scrub with soapy brush, perhaps multiple items at a time (leaving them in the sink while covered in bubbles), rinse all bubbles and grime away under the hot tap.

I'm SO glad this thread exists.
