My attitude could probably be described as old-fashioned, narrow-minded, prejudiced etc. I'm of the opinion that "smelling nice" is a woman thing and it's rather girly for men to reek like a rosebush. I'm not suggesting that anybody, man or woman, should pong of sweat and BO. Just to be hygienically neutral without added flavour, as it were.

By the way, my 89 year-old neighbour wears Old Spice. A 25 year-old workmate wears Paco Rabane, and way too much of it. Both of these products smell awful, IMO.

Over to you.

I still have a tub of Pagan Man talc bought for my dad about 30 years ago. He was horrified to receive it. Pansy-arsed stuff.

I don't know how I've ended up with it but I keep for nostalgia reasons. It's scentless dust now. Much like him.

Oh FFS. MNHQ.

Thank you for making me look like an awful person by deleting my post here:

Message deleted by MNHQ. Here's a link to our Talk Guidelines.

The word I used, which begins with P, is a word dreamed up by the egregious homophobe and troll Richard Littlejohn of the Daily Mail.

It was a clear joke and was used with irony seeing as the OP, who you haven't deleted, started a thread talking about men who like aftershave as being effeminate.

I expect Mumsnet, as media-savvy people, to realise the reference and also to spot the context of the rest of the post which talked about my hubby doing other P things such as waxing and having manicures.

Or maybe you're not media-savvy and don't spot references to one of the most popular columnists in the widest read media outlet in Britain and the US?

New Year's Eve has started early, hasn't it?

limitedperiodonly · 31/12/2014 18:09

The offending word was 'poovery' btw.

A ridiculous word.

And not as offensive as the idea that men wearing aftershave are effeminate

emmelinelucas · 31/12/2014 18:15

poovery.

limitedperiodonly · 31/12/2014 18:18

I'm poovery

emmelinelucas · 31/12/2014 18:26

Hail poovery !

emmelinelucas · 31/12/2014 18:28

I got my Caesar mixed up with my Spartacus...

So poovery of me.

limitedperiodonly · 31/12/2014 19:35

Our Caesar salad days

yes, it could. And offensive and sexist. Second use on here tonight of the particularly abusive 'girly' too.

Oldraver · 31/12/2014 20:25

I like a nice smelling man be that from a neutral smell to God forbid Paco Rabanne

What do you mean smelling nice is effeminate ? Is that supposed to be a bad thing ?

PointlessResolutions · 31/12/2014 20:51

I think 'effeminate' is a horrible, sexist word.

And YABVU. My DH wears after shave every now and then. He gets up earlier than I do. It makes me want to pull him back into bed.

XiCi · 31/12/2014 21:14

You are completely correct OP.
Men should smell of blood sweat and tears nothing more

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 31/12/2014 21:17

I love a nice smelling man, I get some nice scents waft my way at work. Nice smell and a suit and a man could make me weak.

XiCi · 31/12/2014 21:18

The most attractive men I've known have had a very natural pheromone smell, indescribable really but very sexy. I find strong aftershave very offputting

TrojanWhore · 31/12/2014 21:18

"Men should smell of blood sweat and tears nothing more"

I like the cut of your jib. But prefer rum, sodomy and the lash.

skildpadden · 31/12/2014 21:19

I like it! Men ought to smell clean but personally I like a nice scent as well. Don't find it feminine. I like 'masculine' smells like cerutti 1881. Burberry weekend for men is so lovely I wear it myself.

TiggyD · 31/12/2014 21:21

"I know a man who wears Izzy Miyake (or something) and when I smell it, I want to do bad things to him."

"My DH wears that. And yes - me too!"

I wear Issy Miyake Bleu. I have never been lucking in the street.

Does that make me effeminate? Or as butch as ever?

TiggyD · 31/12/2014 21:31

I mean Lucked in the street!

Been lucking in the street makes no sense at all!

Pointless...it nearly always is used with negative connatations isnt it ?

Oldraver · 31/12/2014 21:51

Kim I assumed that was the OP's intention

My OH is as 'manly' as you want to stereotype...he wears scent and looks bloody good in a dress too

BOFster · 31/12/2014 21:55

I love a nice discreet fragrance on a man, especially something a bit earthier and more unusual than the ubiquitous citrus-based ones marketed to teenagers. If it is really right on a person, it enhances their natural smell and somehow mingles with their pheromones to create Instant Bad Thoughts...

There's nothing worse though than having to share a space with a Lynx-drenched peacocking office-worker; the pong of adolescent bedrooms is actively repellent.
