Newcastle, New Years Eve 1984 - what better way to begin afresh than with an elegant Toni demi-wave from the chemists?
No sitting round in Fenwicks salon for us - not when mam and aunty Joan had a bag full of perming rollers, 40 silk cut (each), 2 cans of Kestrel Super Strength, and an almost emptyish kitchen sink - twas a right pamper sesh.
I can remember the big reveal like it was yesterday. Begone waist length tresses and becometh Vera Duckworth style frizz.
Mam lied and told me it just added a bit of body and bounce...aunty Joan said I looked quite French
Absolute lyin' bastards...

The one at the front right who had big fluffy curls and loads of little beaded plaits, it looks quite short in that pic.

I had a perm in the 90s. A gal came to my mothers house to do it for me. She also managed to drop the lotion down my face and burn my skin off. And she perked my fringe. I looked like a mutilated poodle.

Gatekeeper · 30/12/2014 20:28

What's a baked bean perm??

SwedeDreams · 30/12/2014 20:29

I had bendy rollers, would mousse it hugely and leave them in overnight.

I looked like Mick Hucknall. Royal blue hair mascara didn't help.

Always wanted a spiral perm, like Lisa Bonet? I think?

Catmint · 30/12/2014 20:32

Nick Beggs IIRC

Pagwatch · 30/12/2014 20:32

Lisa Bonet was very beautiful.

SwedeDreams · 30/12/2014 20:35

visionaryartistrymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/lbo4.jpg won't let me add the photo, but Lisa Bonet had lovely hair. Still so jealous.

Littlehomebird · 30/12/2014 20:35

This thread's hilarious! I remember my 80's perms and for whatever reason the object was to get it as big as possible. I remember back combing my roots & fringe then using extra firm hold hairspray on the sides ( just above my ears) to make me look like I had wings! I thought I looked like I was in a rock chic band like heart but I probably looked like side show bob! What was I thinking?!!

Pagwatch · 30/12/2014 20:38

Did you do the bending over, fluffing up your hair and then flicking upright again?

My hair was massive. I don't know how I got through doors. I thought I looked like Madonna. I suspect I looked like Julie Walters.

Pagwatch · 30/12/2014 20:39

I used to get really gorgeous boyfriends.
Is it possible that some handsome young men have Krankies fantasies?

hollyisalovelyname · 30/12/2014 20:39

Anyone remember Molten Browners.
Bendy rods covered in fabric to give you ringlets ( sort of).

MisAnneThropy · 30/12/2014 20:41

I had a huge crush on Lisa Bonet, still do a bit.

I had regular spiral perms done by my elderly aunt and loved them. I always had a dead straight fringe with it though, cos I was classy.

x2boys · 30/12/2014 20:42

The style at my school in the 80,s was to wear your permed hair on top of your head with a about a can of hairspray holding it up in a top pony tail with your foundation just a touch too orange and your long white socks rolled down perfectly .

punygod · 30/12/2014 20:46

When I was 13 I had a short back and sides and a brillo pad perm on the top.

I also had acne.

When it grew out I had the exact same hairstyle as Jim Davidson. Ginger and everything.

Funnily enough I didn't have a boyfriend until I was 17.

SwedeDreams · 30/12/2014 20:48

And a sun-in streak at the front, for orangey glamour.

x2boys · 30/12/2014 20:49

Some fucker who was in my form class had put a picture on Facebook of our form photo circa 1988 all the girls had a perm even our form teacher!

AshesOfRoses · 30/12/2014 20:49

I was lucky in that my perms always dropped really quickly. I have very thin hair. I loved them. Remember those pony tail twist gadgets? Looked lovely with wavy hair Sad

madmomma · 30/12/2014 20:52

I had a very tight spiral perm on my long hair LAST MONTH!!! I think it was a weird reaction to my husband getting the all clear from cancer. I really thought it would drop to an elegant wave but no. And she razored it!

BOFster · 30/12/2014 20:52

Do you remember when Lisa Bonet got it cut short in The Cosby Show? I actually swooned.

To wonder why Toni home perms are no longer all the rage?
MisAnneThropy · 30/12/2014 21:00

Aaah, she is so beautiful. I'd forgotten just how much until I saw High Fidelity.

FreudiansSlipper · 30/12/2014 21:02

It's a shame that wet look hair gel is no longer fashionable, I am not sure you can still buy it

Lisa Bonet is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen her husband's have been beautiful too

I had thick unruly curly hair no need for a perm was not allowed high lights but did use lots of hair mousse thankfully no one ever held a naked flame within a few inches of my hair

and then hair serum came along

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 30/12/2014 21:05

I assume that perms are now illegal. If not, they should be. It was the one thing I did once to my hair and never again.

x2boys · 30/12/2014 21:08

I did it twice but it seemed to last for years.

madamginger · 30/12/2014 21:14

I had permed hair from 1989 to 1994, I thought I looked amazing but I probably looked like a poodle.
I had eye watering acid perms that stank the house out that my mums mate did, she was a mobile hairdresser in the 1970s and clearly never learnt to cut any other styles.

Arrowminta · 30/12/2014 21:26

I remember having perms and running home from the hairdressers to reverse perm the fringe out as mine always boinged up, old lady style. Only then did I venture out.
