to not understand zoella and the popularity of a video showing how to ice digestives

Quick & Easy DIY Christmas Treats | Zoella:

I'm probably just old, but seriously are teenagers these days so useless at cooking that a video of putting icing on a digestive and snapping a candy Kane in half then filling with chocolate is informative?

I'm really intrigued by the 2 year olds watching kinder eggs being unwrapped.

Feel tempted to let DD watch one to see what happens ...

IWannaHoldYourHand · 29/12/2014 09:21

The kinder egg thing is... Bizarre. Ds2 is fully into the one that he calls 'Wonky eye Thomas' where Thomas' eye is drawn on in the wrong place Confused

Those of you with older children, how do you feel about the way youtubers have dealt with the sexual abuse allegations that have occurred this year?

trinitybleu · 29/12/2014 09:30

DD (7) is obsessed with the Shopkins opening ones and wants to do her own ... Also the general toy opening ones and Stampy for Minecraft.

cece · 29/12/2014 09:31

You can make a lot of money from making those videos on youtube. My friend put a 30 second video up from a holiday where they were charged by a rhino. She has made about £10,000 from ads attached to it plus it has been used in some TV programmes.

26Point2Miles · 29/12/2014 10:02

I also follow missbudgetbeauty.. Milo is cute!

How about the mummy vlogs?

There are a few good ones

26Point2Miles · 29/12/2014 10:03

Really cece? They all claim they don't earn much. Katieandbaby is a young mum I love watching, she was recently sent a £200 changing bag to review and keep so I did wonder

MarjorieMelon · 29/12/2014 10:04

Cece, how does that work then? Did your friend contact the advertisers first? I'm totally clueless about all this. I'm still from the generation that thinks a funny video =£250 from You've been framed.

Smitten1981 · 29/12/2014 10:05

I have to admit I watch way too many of these you tube vlogs and I'm waaay too old for them at 33. Fleur De Force is my favourite, I'm a bit jealous of her lifestyle, I don't really watch Zoe, Tanya or the Saccone Jolys anymore as they come across way too smug now they're earning a lot of money.

Smitten1981 · 29/12/2014 10:07

They earn loads. Zoella just bought a house with her boyfriend that was up for nearly £1m

Bunbaker · 29/12/2014 10:10

"These bloggers are the new gods amongst teens and pre teens."

This

DD (14) watches loads of Youtube videos and even went to the big Youtube event at Alexandra Palace in the summer. She wants to go again this year.

zombiesheep · 29/12/2014 10:10

They massively have their faults. Do some reading up on zoella, her laziness, lying her about her book etc.

There has also been a fair bit of talk about the SacconeJolys abusing their children with countless video clips showing some rather odd behaviour, including throwing their daughter and leaving her unattended with their pack of untrained, unruly dogs. Of which they bred themselves because they couldntbe bothered to neuter either parent.

MarjorieMelon · 29/12/2014 10:11

Right I think I have to improve my understanding. Perhaps my kids can earn enough so we can have a million pound house. Hmm

FollowTheStarship · 29/12/2014 10:11

OMG. I haven't read the whole thread but I just tried to watch the first link and had to stop after about 20 seconds. Both of them made me want to stick forks in my eyes. I'm sure they're lovely and yes there's much worse stuff kids could be watching, but jesus, the chirpiness and inane grinning! Aaargh!

Are there any amusingly sardonic and sophisticated versions?

stardusty5 · 29/12/2014 10:17

Smitten thats how i feel too! At first they were more relatable when looking for ways to look and feel better. Fleur went through a phase of always featuring really high end or US only products but she seems to have got a better mix of normal brands with the posher stuff added in. I watch the vlogs less than the main uploads as their lifestyles are a little unbelieveable at times!

Smitten1981 · 29/12/2014 10:17

I've watched the Saccone Jolys for a while and I've never once thought they've 'abused' their children. That's a really strong accusation. Their children seem very well cared for and are both very happy and smiley. They clearly adore their dogs too.

Bunbaker · 29/12/2014 10:22

"My DD loves Dan and Phil or "Phan""

So does DD. she saw them at Ally Plly last year, but didn't actually get to meet them.

Smitten1981 · 29/12/2014 10:30

I really like Hannah Maggs too. Her and her husband's vlogs are so well shot, they put a lot of effort in and it shows. Does anyone else watch them or just me?

26Point2Miles · 29/12/2014 10:55

Never heard of them!

NettleTea · 29/12/2014 11:42

Thank you Petitgrain - she is over the moon with 2 new subscribers this morning and the encouragement

cece · 29/12/2014 13:50

My friend's video was on youtube without much interest for about 6 months. It was linked to on some website or other and it started getting a lot of views. Within 24 hours an agent had contacted her and they were responsible for putting ads at the beginning of the video and also selling it's use to tv companies.

cece · 29/12/2014 13:52

I think people like Zoella also get paid to review/use products in their blogs I believe.

The people who make the minecraft videos make an absolute fortune according to my 11 year old.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 29/12/2014 14:20

I've watched some of the SJ's vlogs ; out of curiosity I hasten to add.

The children are adored, seem to be very well cared for and appear happy and well adjusted.

'Abuse' is a very strong accusation zombie

Abuse is a ridiculous accusation. "Video clips showing the child left unattended with a pack of dogs" ...would this be CCTV footage or would there be a parent behind the camera perhaps Hmm.

NettleTea · 29/12/2014 22:44

fluffling to be honest I am not surprised, because its like any 'pop' superstardom, there are going to be those with supersized entitled egos, there are going to be those who will take advantage of what I am guessing they would refer to as 'groupies' (adoring fans) and its pretty much what has happened across the ages with rock stars before them. The media has just changed.

Im not saying its right. But its always happened and sadly, certainly until the climate changes, it will continue to happen.

At least the record labels and networks are acting responsibly at this point, dropping them and banning them from attending functions (so thats an improvement on the old cover up/turn a blind eye days) and because of the media they deal in, the rumours and information is getting out into the public domain and people are not keeping quiet about it.

We met Stampy and Squid at EGX and they were absolutely lovely, and were happy to spend a good 20 mins chatting with us.
