to not understand zoella and the popularity of a video showing how to ice digestives

Quick & Easy DIY Christmas Treats | Zoella:

I'm probably just old, but seriously are teenagers these days so useless at cooking that a video of putting icing on a digestive and snapping a candy Kane in half then filling with chocolate is informative?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 28/12/2014 21:48

I like Sali!

lucjam · 28/12/2014 21:53

My DD is also obsessed. Zalfie (that's Zoe and Alfie) live 2 streets away from us. Dd would spend all day hanging around their front door if I let her. Dd now wants to be a you tuber. Sigh. About as ambitious as wanting to be a footballers wife!!

mamapain · 28/12/2014 21:54

I don't like Marian's books they aren't really my thing, its just refreshing to see a video that isn't aimed at the 18-25 market and comes from someone reasonably normal.

As SirChen is saying, it would be nice to read/watch something that wasn't so sodding aspirational. I'd be happy to read witty comment on day to day life. Don't get me wrong, I can Pinterest with the best of them and will occasionally lap up some supposed style or interiors advice that is totally out of my realm.

It's just there are times, when I read blogs featuring the bloody sheep milk cheesecake they've churned at home, between reupholstering all their furniture in reclaimed fabrics and embroidering all the gifts for the teachers with their immaculate children that I want to scream. I live in inner London, I have a full time job, 5 children and a crippling mortgage; I cannot relate to this bollocks.

At least with the beauty bloggers I can assuage my inferiority by buying everything they suggest.

I've just watched that Zoella video and quite liked it. It is no where near as weird as what preschoolers watch on YouTube. DD likes to watch toy demos and kinder eggs being unwrapped.

BigPawsBrown · 28/12/2014 22:10

I think this youtube snobbery is quite judgey tbh. It is not as if we sit around watching the news and question time alone. Where zoella teaches make up, we may have watched home and away. It's just a generational thing. Besides that, I hate the snobbery around women and make up anyway; why is doing your make up creatively seen to be more vacuous than going to the football or whatever? I'm a woman. Youtube made me a lot more adept at make up. I still have a brain and a good job. If a child of mine aspired to be like zoella Id be happy with that - it's NOT like being a wag as zoella is a self made millionaire. She's doing a creative job (look at the editing on her autumn look book), she's clean living (she doesn't drink), she's getting help for the panic disorder she's been very open about. So she daily vlogs too - how's that so different to Facebooking?

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 28/12/2014 22:42

God did the saccone jolys get bigger? He is from cork and is a tool. I used to work I won't say where and he and your wan came in for advice on an issue. I hadn't a notion who they were but the whole thing was blogged about. If he was an ice cream, he'd lick himself

DuchessofBuffonia · 28/12/2014 23:07

Pico - what is it about the videos of kinder eggs and surprise eggs that makes them so addictive? My 2yr old would watch them all day if I'd let him (also a Russian cartoon and Playdoh demonstrations).

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 28/12/2014 23:11

I quite like Zoella (she did a brilliant video on panic attacks), joe sugg (her brother) and sprinkleofglitter ...the others irritate me!

But the worst, is johnathon of the Saccone Jolys (closely followed by his wife)...he is an absolute tool....they give me the rage!

TOADfan · 28/12/2014 23:14

I'm addicted to Kila from MissBudgetBeauty. She is amazing. Don't know why I love her so much but she is so down to earth, always admits if she has been sponsored (which Zoella aka Zoe Suggs doesn't) and talks about her family and life without it being all "I'm brilliant"

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 28/12/2014 23:29

I started off watching charlieissocoollike, nerimon etc back when vlogging was a (relatively) new, weird thing - for teens to watch, anyway. I was one of the only ones at school who knew anything about vlogging and it wasn't considered 'cool'.

My 15 year old brother is really into PewDiePie, Danisnotonfire, Phil something? That kind of vlogger. I think my sister likes Zoella.

I progressed to parenting and family vlogs when I got pregnant - I watch Daily Bumps/Bumps Along The Way, the Nive Nulls, Jared and Ellie, the Shaytards etc. OH watches the Yogscast Minecraft videos and we both like Nerd Cubed, The Gaming Lemon etc - video game vloggers.

For us, it's no different to the way my parents watch TV, or others read books.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 28/12/2014 23:30

Oh but I can't abide Emma Blackery. She does my nut in.

MarjorieMelon · 28/12/2014 23:33

I don't get video blogging fullstop. When they had the blogging episode on the Apprentice I just didn't get it. Who could be bothered to watch any of this rubbish?

dontknowwhatthisis · 28/12/2014 23:34

I've never seen Zoella before (don't have daughters) but watching the link the OP gave, I can definitely see the appeal for young teens and preteens. I think she's pretty and groomed in a girl-next-door way rather than an unattainable model way. She's cute, happy, confident without being threatening, and really seems like a kind and encouraging big sister. Her boyfriend is similarly cute-but-attainable, and they are both wildly unsexual for some reason, which I'd imagine allows young girls to fantasise about their relationship without getting freaked out. She seems like a really comforting person for young girls to relate to as a big sister, or for them to imagine themselves being when they are older. Her world seems safe, calm, uncomplicated and happy. It's simple escapism. no?

WaroftheRoses · 28/12/2014 23:42

Wow-there's a whole new world out there for me to waste even more time enjoy!
Looking at the Joly couple-let's be honest, if a guy is punching that much above his weight he's going to want to tell brag to the whole world about it!! Grin

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 28/12/2014 23:45

Marjorie I could say the same about The Apprentice...

personal opinions and all that :)

MarjorieMelon · 28/12/2014 23:50

That's true Moomin it is all personal preferences. I just wonder if I'm too old as blogging or vlogging or whatever it's called seems to go over my head.

GokTwo · 28/12/2014 23:51

My Dd is obsessed with them too. We live a few streets away from one and Dd lives for the day that she bumps into her!! I watched Zoella a few times with her and am just stunned by how totally banal and boring it is!

mswibble · 28/12/2014 23:52

I'm relatively new to the whole vlogging thing but I quickly became addicted to the Saconne Jolys! I'm not sure what it is, I first stumbled across Anna's blog as I was searching for pregnancy blogs (currently 23wks with my first) and after reading through months of her blogs I had a shufty on YouTube. They're inoffensive enough and I just take it as a fluffy 20mins. I have now stopped reading the comments as like the comments on the Daily Fail, they have you despairing of the bile filled public. I don't understand why people would bother watching something they find so riling! (But then again I think those on GuruGossip are sad dried up old hags who need to find a hobby away from their laptop!)

I don't watch Zoella, I'm not her target audience and I'm certainly not into all this 'business', goes against my newfound Kondo-ness.
I quite like MissBudgetBeauty/KhilaTalk, FleurDeVlog, PrettyShinySparkly but I don't subscribe to many at the mo'. My Mulberry bag is an 'authentic replica' from Turkey so I'm not sure why I enjoy watching people with way more disposable income than me splash their cash!

I have to admit that I really cannot bear Tanya Burr, really mean of me but she sounds so fake. I do wonder if she has always spoken that way! All the Gleam Team stuff is a little cringey too.

mswibble · 28/12/2014 23:53

That should read 'I'm not into all this HAUL business'...

GokTwo · 28/12/2014 23:53

Harmless though. I have no concerns about Dd watching her.

NettleTea · 29/12/2014 00:02

I quite like the Vloggers - my daughter Vlogs and she is excited to have 21 subscribers!! she does funny little make up things and videos of where we have been.
she seems to like that cool charlie bloke, dan and phil and alot of make up people
she would be supersurprised and very happy if anyone else would like to follow her!!
www.youtube.com/channel/UC-Ed9Dabxqev0n2MsMSpdng

my son likes markaplier, pewdeepie and all the minecraft ones like Stampy/Squid and the rest of them

NettleTea · 29/12/2014 00:03

oh no. i just realised I was on one of those videos!!
luckily it looks like its only had 18 views though!!

Petitgrain · 29/12/2014 01:34

I'll follow her Nettle. My son's a YouTuber, it's fun for them, they entertain people, make them laugh, it's all good IMO.

Petitgrain · 29/12/2014 01:37

She's great Nettle! Tell her to keep it up, her vids are good. The DS is earning a blimmin good living from it these days and he started with 6 mates subscribing to him.
