Popped in to the co-op for a few bits to find them ripping down the decorations as 'Christmas is over'. Well not in our house it isn't and I was really angry with the miserable shits. Surely we're not the only ones with family staying, and parties and meals planned? When did Christmas become one day?

January 6th is not the end of advent. The 24th of dec is the last day of advent. Advent is the christian period of preparation for christmas.
The 25th of dec is the first day of Christmas. The last day of the christian season of christmas is the 6th of jan (the epiphany).

CalleighDoodle · 27/12/2014 22:17

But what has christianity got to do with chriatmas!

Sparklingbrook · 27/12/2014 22:17

It's over for me. Can't wait to get back to normality. Got NYE to endure yet too.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 27/12/2014 22:18

Ummmm...everything? Hmm

NoArmaniNoPunani · 27/12/2014 22:19

I binned all my cards today, can't bear the clutter

ChrissieLatham · 27/12/2014 22:19

YANBU I hated it when we took the decs down on Xmas eve in retail. Even on the week leading up to Xmas they are cutting down the bays of Xmas stock and run out of Xmas essentials just when you want to buy them (not in October, plenty around then!)

Sparklingbrook · 27/12/2014 22:19

Me too NoArmani straight in the green wheelie.

RedSoloCup · 27/12/2014 22:20

Have to do it on the day specified unfortunately, and we have our Easter stuff in already, no lie!!

(Co-op employee)....

ilovesooty · 27/12/2014 22:20

Most people are back at work at least by the first working day after Boxing day. And NYE is just an over sentimental mawkish excuse for a piss up (IMO)

usualsuspect333 · 27/12/2014 22:21

I didn't tear down my decorations, no did to be so bloody dramatic.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 27/12/2014 22:21

Apologies Calleigh I missed your previous post.

eddiemairswife · 27/12/2014 22:22

I can remember when most people had just Christmas and Boxing Day off, all public transport was operating (though with reduced services), and New Year's Day was just a normal working day (London area).

TinklyLittleLaugh · 27/12/2014 22:22

For some people, Christmas is all about the build up to one day: they put their tree up early, stress about having everything ready and perfect, then everything back to normal after Boxing Day.

In our house our decorations go up about a week before, and although DH and I enjoy having family round for the actual day, what we really enjoy is just chilling and doing fuck all until New Year. We eat nice food, watch lots of TV we've had on our planner for ages, and best of all have lots of time to hang out with the people we love.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 27/12/2014 22:22

YANBU. Christmas is not over.
I am working on Monday, but Christmas isn't over until 6 January (or NY day at the earliest.

jamdonut · 27/12/2014 22:22

All the christmas decorations were down by 3:30 on Friday 19 December at the school I work in! The very second the end of term assembly for the parents was over, everything started to come down, and classrooms were cleared up!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 27/12/2014 22:22

Apologies CalleighDoodle you are right, Advent is over and I meant Epiphany.

usualsuspect333 · 27/12/2014 22:22

Mrscog · 27/12/2014 22:23

I don't think you can be angry at shops - in retail terms it's over.

However, in terms of 'festive spirit' I completely agree and don't think you're unreasonable. In our house Christmas lasts until 2nd Jan, we'll be chilling, visiting different friends/family, goinng for walks, a meal out etc. We don't do any of the rushing around delivering presents before, we just spread them out after. It's lovely, and even though there are lots of people in our family who do work various patterns over the week, generally there is always oppotunity to see them one day.

I don't really understand the 'that's it, all over' mentality, it's much nicer not to rush around doing everything before.

usualsuspect333 · 27/12/2014 22:24

NYE has sod all to do with Christmas.

Fluffyears · 27/12/2014 22:24

Popped into sainsburys yesterday and they had massive Hogmanay signs up and Christmas stuff was gone :(

LapsedTwentysomething · 27/12/2014 22:25

I really love this bit in between Christmas and new year, with nothing to do and nowhere to be except hanging about with DCs and other family. It's definitely still Christmas.

Local Sainsburys cleared Christmas stock on 23rd!

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 27/12/2014 22:31

Me too lapsed

HoHonutty · 27/12/2014 22:33

It's over, of course it is.

Babyroobs · 27/12/2014 22:34

It's kind of over for me. back to work Boxing say, horrendously stressful job and not an ounce of Xmas spirit anywhere. However we do still have our tree up , I've cracked open a bottle to de-stress from my shift today and i have another half price turkey crown in the freezer for New Year !

usualsuspect333 · 27/12/2014 22:38

You think everyone has a fairy tale Christmas with twinkly lights, meals out, partys and family get togethers?

Meanwhile back in the real world...
