AIBU to think that Not on the High Street is a bit of a rip off?

Just been having a browse and noticed that a lot of the stuff is mass produced and can be bought from other shops and websites (often on the high street) much cheaper?

I think most stuff on there is personalised though isn't it? Which, I guess, is why they can charge more. I love it though

PunkrockerGirl · 27/12/2014 20:46

Yes I totally agree. Overpriced tat which, as you say, can often be found cheaper elsewhere.

Nerf · 27/12/2014 20:49

I think it's gorgeous and original but suffers from Facebook sellers ripping the ideas off and devaluing it all.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 27/12/2014 20:49

You want to take a look at Pedlars if you think that's bad Wink www.pedlars.co.uk

BikeRunSki · 27/12/2014 20:49

For the less mass produced stuff, go straight to the producer. Their details are in the NOTHS listing.

Waltonswatcher · 27/12/2014 20:49

I think it's full of 'buy a gift for someone with shit loads of money who has everything already' type things .
Nothing anyone needs or probably really will want in six months .

cuppateaandtoast · 27/12/2014 20:52

Yanbu we have been conned into buying som crap stuff on there. Never again.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 27/12/2014 20:52

The thing I hate about NOTHS is that they show print type products (say a soundwave print of your child's laugh) framed in the product picture. But the price never bloody includes the frame, and the frame prices are a total rip off.

Wotsitsareafterme · 27/12/2014 20:54

There's a fabric shopping bag on the. Pedlars site for 9.95 am
I missing something?

Marmiteandjamislush · 27/12/2014 20:55

My eyes Ladysybil, that site is so expensive.

Keep coming, Wotsit. It's the site that just keeps on giving laughs

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 27/12/2014 20:57

Crazy aint it! Grin

MrsCakesPrecognition · 27/12/2014 20:58

It is always worth spending a few moments to see if you can source the items direct from the producers.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 27/12/2014 20:59

cleaning kit Shock itd be cheaper to just fling the shoes and buy a new pair (mind, I do get mine from Primark)

CarpeJugulum · 27/12/2014 21:00

Yes to some stuff. However, some stuff isn't too bad at all. Got some Christmas stuff I'm very happy with and which was exceptionally well priced. Just a small seller though.

Marmiteandjamislush · 27/12/2014 21:01

Mrs and Bike do some of them have independent websites then?

OP posts:
ThinkIveBeenHacked · 27/12/2014 21:03

Apparently they charge very high commission.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 27/12/2014 21:05

A couple of years ago I would have disagreed with you, it was really well curated so paying a bit extra was ok.

Now they've added soooooo many products but not upgraded their shite website so it's impossible to find anything anymore. I use etsy for that kind of thing now.

MrsCakesPrecognition · 27/12/2014 21:05

Yes, I got some personalised stamps direct from one of their sellers a year or two ago.

Hassled · 27/12/2014 21:06

I've got a fair bit from there in previous years but there was just nothing this year which made me think it was worth buying. And yes, overpriced.

LapsedTwentysomething · 27/12/2014 21:08

I was given a sewing tin by DH from NOTHS (I want to learn). It's much smaller than he expected and frankly the quality of the scissors and cottons in it are dire. It's pretty. The contents will be chucked away. It will make a nice tin for buttons or threads.

Wouldn't shop there personally on the basis if that.

Interesting about the charges. My purchase did include a leaflet giving more direct purchase info... May look at those prices now then!

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/12/2014 21:18

The bastards showed their father Christmas letters in the advert, which dd recognised as the one she received last year. Sad

saturnvista · 27/12/2014 21:21

I've found it very hit and miss - the odd nice thing and many items that were smaller than the photograph/much more expensive than the original price listing suggested. There are now so many products that don't seem to fit with their brand image - I wonder if they're getting greedy. With a few exceptions, I think there are cheaper ways to buy items of a similar quality. Many of the really interesting pieces can be bought directly from the individual artist's website.
