What bothers me is the ignorance that goes with grammatical mistakes eg could of, because people really think that it is correct. I don't think that cos is correct, because, if I was typing a letter, I would not use it. This is a much less formal setting though and on forums and text I will use it as a form of abbreviation, because it is, lazy or not.

Cos is a word.
It's a mathematical abbreviation for cosine, used on its own.

I'm surprised it's spelled somethink personally, as it's pronounced salmfink
(Around here it's sammink)

nickeljrismybabesitter · 28/12/2014 16:48

Anyway, there's nothing wrong with a bit of Umgangsprache on a forum.

Generally we write correctly, but a little bit of "cos" or other abbreviations (it is an abbreviation according to the oed) and the occasional missing capital letter is fine.

There's also nothing wrong with a dash - perfectly acceptable, if overused.
Usually, parentheses or a colon would suffice.

Pipbin · 28/12/2014 16:56

I don't object to cos in a regular post. I do think it is poor form to use it in a post complaining about how someone else's post is hard to read due to bad spelling and grammar.

nickeljrismybabesitter · 28/12/2014 17:07

Okay, yes, I agree with that
