Just gave away a puppy (new owner did not pay)

My shitz-zu had a beautiful litter, the puppies are shitz-zu schnauzer crosses. I have found all of them great homes, I did not advertise it was through friends and people through work. So I have a link to each and every pup!

I know a lovely lady from dog walking, and since my dog was pregnant she let me know her sister would love one.

I reserved a boy for her sister and when puppies were 4 weeks old she picked her little boy. Her sister asked was I charging and I said yes I am charging and would offer her sister a discount so pup would be £100.00; told me she would let her sister know.

Fast forward to yesterday she picked up her puppy and left me a present, a gorgeous box and inside of the box was a bottle of very expenisive gin/soda and a lemon and a card. I thought how nice what a lovely lady! I opened the card and there was no payment.

I want to send her sister a text, letting her know how grateful I am for the present (I did include a puppy pack for this lady, with blanket, teddy, vet details, groomer details, and a bottle of Prosecco), however I was charging.

Would I be unreasonable asking for my money, I feel embarrassed to have to ask her.

Please help

It boggles my mind to read "I love dogs". No you don't! If you loved dogs you wouldn't have bred a litter of crossbreeds. You wouldn't plan to do it again. That's not loving dogs. That's loving a quick buck. So many dimwits claim to love dogs. Then breed them. If you love dogs you neuter your pets (veterinary advice withstanding) and you take a stroll around your nearest shelter and look at each and every dog and pup waiting to be pts because some selfish halfwit decided to "breed".

sooperdooper · 27/12/2014 01:45

Not sure how you can say it was an accident when you know the exact cross the pups were and that your dog isn't spayed

Why isn't she and why are you consisting breeding again? That's utterly irresponsible, and if you're selling pups as an unregistered breeder of mongrels I'm not sure what come back you have against people who don't pay

Tiptops · 27/12/2014 02:07

Goodness me. When will people buck up their ideas and be a bit more responsible?

OP, you should never have allowed your dog to become pregnant. We are overrun with unwanted dogs in this country, infact perfectly healthy dogs are being put down as there simply aren't enough homes. Every puppy you have rehomed has taken the potential place of a rescue dog.

Taking the puppies to the vets for a check up is in no way a substitute for pre-mating genetic tests. If your sister is a responsible breeder she would know this.

Tiptops · 27/12/2014 02:09

If it was an 'accident' why are considering doing it again Hmm

Please do the right thing and have your doh spayed!

Did you get your money OP?

Nomama · 27/12/2014 11:24

Oh dear god!

A dog had puppies.

And the law of Mumsnet is that the owner is a hideously cruel bitch who should be banned form keeping animals.

Logic: Spay everything = no more cuddly animals to cry over. Result!

CheerfulYank · 27/12/2014 11:38

Oh ffs. Dogs (like people) get accidentally pregnant all the time. It does happen.

And people love animals more if they pay more for them, really?

I've just lost my lovely old boy. I couldn't have loved that dog more and I'm heartbroken he's gone.

He was free. A pup I got from an accidental litter. Hmm

Bowlersarm · 27/12/2014 11:42

I bloody hate the MN judgey posts on MN when the word 'puppy' is mentioned.

Have you heard anything back, OP?

Bubble2bubble · 27/12/2014 11:47

So you've made £600, that's quite an incentive for most people.
I sincerely hope all your puppies have truly lovely homes for life.
Maybe you would consider a small donation to a local rescue who will be taking in many unwanted Christmas puppies who have not been so lucky.

Nomama · 27/12/2014 11:48

Bubble, did you read all of OPs costs? No? Thought not!

Floralnomad · 27/12/2014 11:51

An accident is a male dog getting into your garden ,or your bitch escaping , it is not an accident if you have an unspayed bitch in season ,your sister has a stud dog and you don't supervise properly ! This litter was without doubt well planned .

midori1999 · 27/12/2014 11:54

Dogs only get accidentally pregnant if they have careless or negligent owners. Even if there is an 'accidental' mating, you can have a mismate jab or an emergency spay to prevent a pregnancy. Both far less risky for the bitch and better than risking puppies with preventable problems because the parent/parents weren't appropriately health tested.

There are over 20,000 dogs being killed in the UK every year due to lack of homes. The RSPCA alone kill around 6-7,000. I don't think there is going to be any shortage of cute dogs any time soon...

WannaBe · 27/12/2014 11:57

all the "rescue centres are overrun with unwanted dogs" is a bit of a red herring really.

Yes, there are a lot of unwanted dogs in rescue centres. some of them are pure bred dogs which owners paid a lot of money for. Yes really. Most people who would take on a puppy wouldn't consider a rescue. I'm not in the market for a puppy but if I was wouldn't consider a rescue because their histories are largely unknown.

Just because someone charges over the odds for a puppy doesn't make them a responsible breeder, either it's wrong to breed dogs or it isn't, just because the dogs were bred to a random dog rather than some carefully selected stud to ensure the right eyes/coat/colours yada yada yada doesn't make it less irresponsible. Just because someone takes on a dog bred to a random other dog doesn't mean a dog in rescue is going to die tonight any more than if you buy a dog from a "reputable" breeder.

Bubble2bubble · 27/12/2014 12:00

nomama I can't actually see any mention of costs. A vet check, worming and puppy blankets and toys would still leave the op with an expensive bottle of gin and plenty of change out of £600 cash.

Blackout234 · 27/12/2014 12:15

PS: Scuttlebutler,I will do it again next year, that is my decision and it was a happy accident.
but you wouldnt dream of doing it for at least 18 months?
Hmm

SistersOfPercy · 27/12/2014 12:37

bubble there are 9 pups. Thats 9 vet checks, 9 lots of worming, 9 lots of food, heating, water and 9 lots of pups to look after for 8 weeks.

Now, don't know much about you but I value 8 weeks of very full on work at more than £100 per puppy.

Bubble2bubble · 27/12/2014 12:41

Fine. It's obviously not about money then :)

Nomama · 27/12/2014 12:45

Ah! Thanks, I was just coming back to do that, Sisters Smile

I don't think OP was in anyway irresponsible, stupid, cruel, money hungry, etc, etc. She acknowledges she made an error and then chose a course of action that gave herself and others joy.

No dogs were harmed, like most other female animals bitches are designed to give birth, everything else is just judgey knickered snideness.

SistersOfPercy · 27/12/2014 12:50

You obviously feel it is bubble.

I've never raised pups but I do know from friends that you are going to have vet checkups for Mum before the event, possible vet intervention when pups are born. Several sleepless nights waiting for pups. Extra heating costs because small puppies will need a reasonably well heated area. Large amounts of disinfectant for floors. Repeated cleaning of the puppy play area several times a day and night.

Then we come on to solid food. You can't just nip to Tesco for a bag of bakers, decent puppy food doesn't come cheap and with 9 mouths to feed thats a fair cost. Then lets add to that the fact that Mum is going to need more nutrients to keep up with feeding those 9 new mouths so again, more costs.

Then we move on to the aforementioned vet checks, 9 lots of them. Petrol to and from the vets, maybe even parking (small costs add up). Then there is the time of the other person you are probably going to need to take with you to help unless you've bought crates - more costs.

£100 a puppy will not cover OP's costs. There is no profit there and she's probably running at a substantial loss.

Most BYB do it for profit I agree, but most BYB charge a hell of a lot more than £100 and give the dog some stupid name like 'westiepoo's' or 'Cavachons'. My personal feeling is I'm very against breeding for the sake of breeding and I feel there should be some control over it and breeders should be registered before they can breed.

In OP's case there was an accident. Fair enough, they happen. The pups have gone out at a nominal costs and all is well, however, at this point I think OP should be breathing a sigh of relief and booking the dog in to be spayed.

ClangerOnaComeDown · 27/12/2014 12:56

Op I got as far as your post saying the pups have been hip scored and I'm calling bullshit.

pups cannot be hip scored under the bva until they are 12 months of age and they have to be kennel club registered.

Aslo hips and elbows cost around £300 pounds per a pup.

Nomama · 27/12/2014 13:00

Hip scored?

She said they had a check: last week each pup was checked ears, hips, eyes etc worming again and the new owners agreed they would get the first vaccinations hence the price

Hip scores are completely different from a vet giving a puppy a once over.

Blackout234 · 27/12/2014 13:06

There is something seriously wrong if you leave a female In heat with a stud dog and then call it an accident. if she got off her lead, escaped from the garden THATS an accident.

Blackout234 · 27/12/2014 13:09

Also extremely irresponsible to be breeding her again in the next year, presumably without the health checks. I dont see how a non checked bitch getting pregnant is anything "Happy". What if in a years time you see one of the pups and they have hair loss? A malformed hip? Are blind? How happy will you be then? IF youre going to breed again for the love of god get her checked over
