Several items on long ago booked leading Supermarket home delivery now unavailable!

I booked an Xmas delivery slot with one of the leading supermarkets in late November. I'd carefully planned the menu etc.

I've just logged back in today to add some more items to this delivery, when I noticed that several of the items I've asked for are listed as 'No longer available'. I wouldn't mind if it was the odd thing here or there but these Christmas staples, such as chestnuts, breadcrumbs etc. All but one of the ingredients I needed for my pudding are also now unavailable.

I'm now going to have to do an additional shop I didn't want to do, as well as totally reconsider my pudding.

I'm pretty hacked off to be honest as I had booked this specifically because it's hard for me to get to the shops at the best of times. I particularly wanted to avoid it at this time of year.

I thought the whole point of them releasing delivery slots early was so that you could ensure you got a delivery and all your hard to get items! I appreciate they can't guarantee items the rest of the year, but I would have thought they would have made more of an effort at Christmas.

Anyway I posted this as a warning really, if you have a Christmas delivery booked you might want to have a double check in your basket to make sure your items are all available.

I thought they reserved your items when you do the order? They may be showing out of stock because there's such a number of reservations on particular products but you'll probably get them in your shopping if pre ordered

I paid £30 for a years worth of anytime deliveries so that aspect doesn't worry me. If I need anything dh can get it on his way home from work! I work right next to a tesco and every year we gasp at the madness!

windchime · 21/12/2014 15:13

Our Tesco Extra was almost empty at 10am today. When I commented to an assistant about the quietness of the store, she replied 'oh everyone shops online for Christmas these days'. And suffers the consequences, it seems. Shopping today was total bliss and they had everything I needed/wanted .

LittleDonkeyLeftie · 21/12/2014 15:38

It's best to avoid going back into the order near the delivery time if you can avoid it as that way they will just have to give you a substitution, and they will pay the difference if what they subs with is more expensive.

You do have to go into "View Full Basket" and click on the substitutions button (Tescos) or you don't get any subs at all.

I also paid £30 for unlimited anytime Tescos deliveries so I had a delivery yesterday, another 23rd and another 27th, all smaller deliveries so I don't have to worry about things going out of date, not having things.

At the end of the day, so long as I have the turkey, pots, some veg, and the stuffing and pigs in blankets, nothing else really matters does it?

helensburgh · 21/12/2014 15:40

This is why I don't do online food orders anymore.

I had the Same issue last Xmas and had no turkey, carrot, or prawns!

SASASI · 21/12/2014 15:48

I don't do Christmas online orders. Several local butchers let you order everything from starter to desert in advance so that's how we do it - they open at 6am on Christmas Eve so a 10min drive in, collect & back home before any madness. Tis perfect!

katrina81 · 21/12/2014 15:51

yes this has happened to me today with tesco when I checked mine due for delivery tomorrow, I went on a bit later and re-added the items which became available again, they must of had a delivery.

Apparently they have to save a certain amount of instore stock so if that falls below a certain percentage the online shoppers loose stuff.

Allalonenow · 21/12/2014 16:01

This happened to me today, with of all things roast potatoes in goose fat, surely they haven't actually run out of these four days before Christmas!

This would be the first time ever I've not made my own roast potatoes, but no short cut for me after all, so have added a bag of King Edwards to my order. Xmas Smile

MrsKringle · 21/12/2014 16:18

I'm not sure how a supermarket could reserve the items for you though? I assume Ocado ensure they have the right amount of stock ordered in nearer the time to fulfill the customer's orders. But Tesco or Sainsbury's wouldn't be able to put aside a bag of potatoes or a pot of cream for December when the order was placed in Oct/Nov. They have instore customers who get first dibs. It only works with Ocado because it's a warehouse just for online customers so they can monitor stock levels and see what's been ordered and what they need to order more of to fulfill those orders. That could only work with somewhere like Tesco if every store had a separate place out back where they kept the online food and ordered the stock accordingly.

MrsKringle · 21/12/2014 16:18

Apologies for the lack of paragraphs. Looked a lot shorter when I was typing!

SpicyBeat · 21/12/2014 16:19

At least you have found out today. I have also stopped Christmas shopping online after the Ocado debacle of 2012. Shopping arrives on Christmas Eve with most of Christmas dinner missing. So instead of greeting arriving family I had to spend the rest of the day trying to piece together a passable Christmas dinner. They sent out a shopper as well to go round local Waitrose stores to find items and I actually bumped into her. She worked her backside off to get me a beef fillet, which she turned up with about 7pm, but the whole thing made the day quite stressful and I would never trust it again.

afreshstartplease · 21/12/2014 16:24

Is there any way to add a tesco discount code after checking out ladies?

BackOnlyBriefly · 21/12/2014 16:26

Yes when you go to order- Make changes. it offers a chance to "Add ecoupons and vouchers"

afreshstartplease · 21/12/2014 16:29

Hmm I'm not seeing it!

marne2 · 21/12/2014 16:31

This is the reason I didn't order my turkey with my online shop, couldn't risk it being out of stock.

RattieBagTheOldHag · 21/12/2014 16:33

A couple of years ago I had booked a huge xmas delivery from Tesco and Waitrose so was pretty relaxed about everything. I hadn't even stocked up on basics. I was SO smug. Grin

Then it's snowed and snowed and snowed and all the deliveries were cancelled AND I couldn't even drive to the shops.

To be honest it didn't seem to matter to much. We walked to the shops in the beautiful peaceful snow and managed to find plenty to eat. It ended up being very relaxing and xmassy.

I'm waiting for a huge Waitrose delivery right now.

MrsPigling · 21/12/2014 16:33

yes, go to change order then when you go to checkout, there's a link to add vouchers :)

afreshstartplease · 21/12/2014 16:34

There isn't I swear!

ddubsgirl77 · 21/12/2014 16:38

Home shop get print out of orders and its picked that morning it stock isnt out on the shelf then they cant pick it

PurpleSwift · 21/12/2014 16:41

Well technically you're only booking a delivery slot in advance. Not the food. Someone still has to go around and physically get your items on the day of delivery so your shopping is still being done in the same conditions as if you were actually there yourself. And this close to Xmas things do get short of stock. However I agree supermarkets should foresee this considering they have access to your orders and account for it all. I had this happen this year and I just altered my shopping.

SpottyTeacakes · 21/12/2014 16:41

You have to go to change payment details then you can add coupons

Minisoksmakehardwork · 21/12/2014 16:41

If they're saying unavailable does this mean they will substitute them. Since my order is all in and done... You'd like to think so but I doubt it as I've ordered the massive packs of batteries. They're hardly likely to sub them with lots of smaller packs.

It is annoyed by but there is still a chance these good will become available again before delivery - I've had that happen before.

afreshstartplease · 21/12/2014 16:42

Spotty where is change payment details please?

SpottyTeacakes · 21/12/2014 16:50

Are you on desktop? You click on go to check out then there's the page of have you missed anything then the page have you missed any offers and then on the next page in the bottom left there's small writing that says change payment details.

LittleDonkeyLeftie · 21/12/2014 16:51

Change Items
(you do have to add or remove something - add a sprout if necessary)
Then proceed to payment
Then scroll down when you get to "Confirm payment" screen and you can add vouchers.

To change payment there is an "edit" hyperlink below the card details.
