Sexist git that he is. On Jonathon Ross last night, he walked past Barbara Windsor and said 'look at it, I'd give it one'.

OP posts:
chockbic · 22/12/2014 12:27

Its a role he plays and is open about it, unlike someone such as Ricky Gervais.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 22/12/2014 12:58

I have had a one woman crusade against him since he made some vile "jokes" about people with epilepsy. When I complained to channel 4 they brushed me off saying that because not that many people have epilepsy it's nothing to worry about (or words to that effect)Shock

dirkdiggler1 · 22/12/2014 13:22

It never ceases to amaze me that there are MN fans of this absolute disgusting shit

It never ceases to amaze me how many sanctimonious, humourless, misererable folks there are on MN.

limitedperiodonly · 22/12/2014 13:34

I sent an angry letter to a newspaper columnist who made a joke about Alzheimer's Disease - he called it old-timers' disease - when my father was going through it. He ignored it.

About five years later we ended up working together. He was, without doubt, one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever met, let alone worked with in the shark pool that is national newspaper journalism.

I never brought it up because by his actions it was clear that it was just a throwaway remark and necessary for the column to work in the format that was required. He also did one pretty great thing that I know of and that humbled the rest of us.

I don't know Jimmy Carr but maybe he is the same. Or maybe he's a cunt.

FrancesNiadova · 22/12/2014 13:41

I can't see me wanting to slap anybody tbh.
I don't like Jimmy Carr though; he's not at all funny, he's a tax-avoiding scumbag & his false laugh is just irritating.
(Saw John Bishop live the other night; he was hilarious!

MrsKoala · 22/12/2014 13:52

I like him. I think his humour is said in a way that is bordering on sarcasm, like he can't believe he's saying it himself. Its a sort of post modern irony i suppose. I think of him as a modern day Bob Monkhouse in his delivery - the jokes are like tubes, if you miss one it doesn't matter because another will be along in a minute - but they all go to the same place. So if you don't like the destination then it isn't for you. I like the quick fire aspect.

I think he comes across quite likeable and i even like his laugh Shock

limitedperiodonly · 22/12/2014 13:56

Interesting FrancesNiadova I don't mind Jimmy Car but I loathe John Bishop with every fibre of my being.

They could do an interesting teeth-off though.

But I would need heavy-duty dark glasses and a lead apron to stand behind to judge it.

MrsKoala · 22/12/2014 13:59

oh god - John Bishop is awful. So bland and long winded. Really hackneyed 'observations'.

limitedperiodonly · 22/12/2014 14:07

YY to the observational 'comedy' MrsKoala.

Eerm has anyone ever noticed, like...

Yes, I have, and so did Stan Boardman and he wasn't funny with his Germans schtick 30 years ago either.

Now, fucking bore off, you professional fucking Scouser.

And just in case anyone thinks it's a north/south thing, I loathe Michael McIntyre too

Storytown · 22/12/2014 14:23

I like some of what Jimmy Carr does some of it goes over my head. I think sometimes he's a bit too clever and the point gets missed by the masses. For example, I think his comment about Babs was probably a remark on the fact that her entire career was built around being a sex object.

I generally find him to be quite pro-women and when there are "quotes" that make him sound sexist they often been taken out of context, when really the joke was on the men in the story.

Either way, I think it's a bit rich to be offended because someone aimed a sexist comment at Barbara Windsor.

dirkdiggler1 · 22/12/2014 14:33

he's a tax-avoiding scumbag

Let's face it we'd all avoid tax if there was a legal way to do so. Only a loony lefty with the IQ of a goldfish would pay tax that they didn't need to.

HellKitty · 22/12/2014 15:13

I used to think John Bishop was mildly amusing. Then we were given one of his DVDs. I laughed more when I had a double tooth abscess. Michael McIntyre has managed to make a career out of 'man drawer'. Smug little git.

BHarris · 22/12/2014 15:36

I personally find him funny, even the cancer jokes (my mum has terminal cancer and my mother in law passed this year from it). He makes offensive jokes without malice. I am sure he doesn't want to heart anyone just question their thoughts.
Sounds like a very mild gag regarding Barbara Windsor, Far less than she made her fame with on the Carry on Films.

chockbic · 22/12/2014 15:39

Ooh I hate Michael McIntyre. Get off the fence man.

hazeyjane · 22/12/2014 17:29

Ok, so he is playing a role and being ironic in a post modern way (oh oh ho), and I am a humourless, sanctimonious blee blah - but, if you had a child with a genetic condition like Down's syndrome, that you worried about being bullied by ignorant arseholes in the future, can you honestly say that when he made a joke about how all children like yours look the fucking same, you wouldn't want to kick him, hard?

MrsKoala · 22/12/2014 17:32

No, i don't think i would. sorry.

hazeyjane · 22/12/2014 17:37

Wow! I am surprised because if anyone I knew said this joke I would be hopping mad, and the fact that he says it to a whole theatre of people and audience of his DVD, and they sit there tittering at the, 'ooh shockingness' of how naughty they are laughing at the disabled children, well that just makes me sick to my stomach.

BertieBotts · 22/12/2014 17:41

I've met him and he wasn't chatty at all, he was impatient and a bit rude. To be fair I was about 18 and a bunch of us followed him down a street loudly conversing about whether it was really Jimmy Carr or not Blush so he perhaps wasn't really expecting to have to deal with being seen, but it was in the middle of the Edinburgh festival, so not a total surprise either.

MrsKoala · 22/12/2014 17:41

i don't think it's particularly funny - i haven't heard the 'joke' so can't comment tho. but no, i don't think i'd want to kick him. i'm also not shocked by it either really. it's hardly a new 'observation'. i have heard plenty worse.

Storytown · 22/12/2014 17:49

Would anyone like to tell us a joke that isn't cruel? One that a comedian could make his living with, no cracker jokes allowed! although they are my very favourite thing about Christmas

Tyzer85 · 22/12/2014 17:51

He can be very funny, even if it's close to the bone sometimes but his laugh is infuriating.

flippinada · 22/12/2014 17:51

hazey I understand where you're coming from.

I think the fact he does it knowingly is almost worse than if he actually meant it.

I reckon people get a kick out this stuff because they enjoy the thrill of laughing at something they know they shouldn't. Or it may be that they're just unpleasant people.

divingoffthebalcony · 22/12/2014 17:52

I agree that he's playing a role and there's a big element of irony to his jokes... but I'm not sure the majority of his audiences believe that. They think he's a straight-up comedian. He knows it too.

LottieMumofWilfJenkins · 22/12/2014 17:54

You would behind me in the queue OP. I have loathed him ever since he made a joke about The National Deaf Childrens Society! He is a smug arsewipe!!!

hazeyjane · 22/12/2014 18:12

it's hardly a new 'observation'. i have heard plenty worse.

It's not an 'observation' at all, as it isn't true, it's 'disabilist bullshit' (in quotation marks because, you know, I'm being all post modern and ironic)

I have heard plenty worse too, from dickkeads and arseholes - that's the whole point.
