To wish brother wouldn't do this

AIBU to think it lacks manners to do really loud, huge yawns without covering your mouth or at least trying to stifle them? My brother does them a lot and I told him to stop it today and he got all huffy and defensive and said he was "only" yawning - what do mumsnetters think?

Meh can't say it is something I can get overly bothered by

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 15:55

I'd rather that than someone belching or stinking out the room with farts or fucking coughing and coughing and coughing even though that can't be helped Blush

Discopanda · 20/12/2014 16:34

Does he only do it when you're talking? If so that would be rude. If it's just a habit then it's not worth getting your knickers in a knot over, everyone has their annoying habits and quirks, my OH does this stupid voice sometimes that really p*sses me off and I've had to ask him a million times not to do.

PrettyLittleMitty · 20/12/2014 16:37

How old is he?

windingbrook · 20/12/2014 16:38

36

It is bad manners, but I'm with the poster who would rather that to the farting. He probably doesn't think he needs to put a polite face on for family.

I do think when we meet with the bank manager he would be better off not doing it!

I think it is annoying, yawning is not nice.
I'm interested in what MrsItsNoworNotatAll wrote, she said: I'd rather that than someone belching or stinking out the room with farts or fucking I might be considered a prude but if I am talking to someone I'd rather they yawned that fucked :-)

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/12/2014 17:53

YANBU.

My DH does various things that make me wonder if he was actually raised by wolves.

Charitybelle · 20/12/2014 18:03

Gros. YaNBU

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 21:18

Hahaha! Joanne Grin sorry I should've put a line through the word fucked as well. Read it again as if I had it might make more sense xx

Rest assured no one has had a Fuck in front of me...

I totally agree! When my DP yawns he makes a really high pitched squealing, it rips into my eardrums and gives me the urge to be violent.

Tanith · 22/12/2014 12:35

I'd suggest he goes to the doctor. Excessive yawning can be a sign of illness - I think jaundice is one where yawning is a symptom.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 22/12/2014 12:36

I yawn a lot since going into medication. Could it be that?

iwasyoungonce · 22/12/2014 12:38

YANBU.

Big loud yawning with no attempt to suppress it or at least cover their mouth, especially when done several times within a few minutes, makes me what to get violent.

Happy Christmas! Grin

oswellkettleblack · 22/12/2014 12:40

Tell him off again. And again. And again.

maleenteringfemalefacilities · 22/12/2014 12:43

I've a team member who does this during meetings - group meetings, one to ones, normal conversation.

Now and again she will cover her mouth (just after, or half way through) and say sorry - usually if whoever is talking catches her eye and pauses to allow the yawn to finish, (i.e. gives a hint that they have noticed!) but it is constant and has been going on for years. I find it very rude and unprofessional - I may have to say something to her after Christmas.

However if it was my brother I'd say "Oy! are we boring you?!" and I'd give him a thump on the arm. (and if he did it again he'd get another thump on the arm).

SoonToBeMrsB · 22/12/2014 12:45

Oh dear, when I yawn at home I do giant exaggerated yawns, usually ending in "oh, dear me..." like my granny says Blush

Outside of the house I cover my mouth and say "excuse me" if it's any consolation!

nunkspugget · 22/12/2014 12:51

Yanbu! My dh does this, and its so loud I can't hear the TV! Where is their dignity!?

mytartanscarf · 22/12/2014 12:53

It's the pits when you see people's fillings and/or tonsils ...
