OP posts:
SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 20:52

Nope.

Owllady · 20/12/2014 20:54

I feel now I'm in fear of offending the Welsh. I just want yo move to gwynedd, that's all
I realise Wales is not only gwynedd etc etc
I realise women do carpentry

According to my youngest son though, Jesus was born in a cot

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 20:55

Blame it on your cabin fever Owl - the result of being cooped up for weeks. If only McDonalds and the shops were open on Christmas Day, then no-one would be frothing hysterically and preventing others from leaving their homes.

ilovesooty · 20/12/2014 20:57

I think people would be frothing hysterically anyway.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 20:59

But at least then they could froth into a greasy burger

Owllady · 20/12/2014 20:59

I have had the flu :( and I did mention up thread my daughter has severe autism. It really is miserable with so many people out, rushing and pushing.
We can't even get a McDonald's because it's queuing traffic from the retail park several miles onto the a6 Confused

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 21:07

Sounds horrible. Par for the course though sadly - which is why having one day when we can all forget work (on the part of DS1 who works in McDs) and travelling (on the part of DH and I who would have to drive him to work). One measly day when we can all be together.

He's back working there on Boxing Day after working Christmas Eve - everyone who needs their transfat fix can get it from 7am onwards then.

ilovesooty · 20/12/2014 21:15

I'm just happy to be going somewhere where Christmas is slightly lower key. There will at least be some limited public transport and some bars and restaurants will be open. I only went out today to pick up my phone from repair and you could hardly move. It's ridiculously hysterical for a short bank holiday.

ilovesooty · 20/12/2014 21:18

And I don't need a transfat fix and don't much care if McDonalds in particular is open but I don't see why it shouldn't be if customers want to use it and staff are happy to work. I don't see why people think sneering at McDonalds and its customers is clever.

Owllady · 20/12/2014 21:23

I realise the conversation is moving on, but I don't understand why people ppl e need so much STUFF either
I don't understand what it's all about

And charming, Of course if it's (Christmas) important to them, people want their family with them, not without them on Christmas day. That goes without saying doesn't it?

As a carer though, any day isn't a rest for me. It doesn't matter what day it actually is :o :)

I live in a very multi place though, there's lots of workers who don't celebrate Christmas...yet so many rushing out, panic buying too Hmm

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 21:27

No-one is sneering Hmm It's a great place for DS to work - but I do not want him being forced to flip burgers for hours on Christmas Day - it's one of the only days in the year we can all be together with none of us working.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 21:29

Actually, come to think of it - it's one of two days in the whole year Sad

nancy75 · 20/12/2014 21:36

The key to this is if the staff are happy to work, most will have been told we are open you are working, not given a choice.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 21:39

Exactly Nancy.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 22:16

I haven't sneered at McDonalds. I just wouldn't like the staff being told they have to work on Christmas day, but they are happy to do that then fine.

Not sure if any are open near me come to think of it.

RufusTheReindeer · 20/12/2014 22:56

Want to the supermarket today (spent £130 on a midweek shop...how for fucks sake how!!!! There's not even a meal in there...but there is baileys and tequila Blush)

Lady who served us is working Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year's Day...she's not happy about it

The problem is if a large shop needs 30 people to run it over the course of a day and has 40 members of staff, there probably will be 20 people delighted to work and 10 people who don't want to

RufusTheReindeer · 20/12/2014 22:57

I am obviously going to shut my imaginary shop over Christmas and Boxing Day and they are knocking off at 4pm on Christmas Eve

Ubik1 · 20/12/2014 23:02

People who work in those professions are also a damn site better paid than retail and restaurant staff on minimum wage as well.

Really? You should speak to the staff in contact centres and control rooms for the NHS, police and fire service. You should have a chat with the ambulance dispatchers, calm takers, porters, kitchen staff.

I worked a Xmas day shift and it was wonderful to get a slice of Dominos pizza at 4pm.

Our Costcutter run by a Muslim family is open on Xmas day too which was marvellous when we ran out of milk.

loveblackcats · 21/12/2014 02:45

fwiw, maccies workers don't flip burgers, it used to be called a turn lay, now they use a clamshell grill.

Andrewofgg · 21/12/2014 07:47

Sooty

I'm just happy to be going somewhere where Christmas is slightly lower key. There will at least be some limited public transport and some bars and restaurants will be open.

It will be low-key for the public transport workers, won't it?

SirChenjin · 21/12/2014 09:46

I know lovecat - DS works there Smile

ilovesooty · 21/12/2014 10:01

Andrew there won't be too many working. I'd imagine they're paid an enhanced rate but I'm not sure.
I am very grateful that the city does put something on as I'm staying outside the centre but if they didn't I'd walk. As I said, some bars and restaurants will be open. In a tourist city there will be plenty who don't have families to spend the day with.

SirChenjin · 21/12/2014 10:03

Actually Ubik - those staff groups you mentioned are better paid than the £4.50-odd than DS earns in McDs.

SirChenjin · 21/12/2014 10:06

Let's hope that those transport/bar/restaurant workers were given the option of working so that you can have the Christmas you want sooty.

ilovesooty · 21/12/2014 10:15

It's not "the Christmas I want" SirChenjin - it's the best Christmas I can create for myself under the circumstances. Perhaps you'd like me to be confined to my hotel room? Oh. I forgot. The hotel staff are working as well.

I might just as well say that I hope the people working in utilities are choosing to work voluntarily so that you can have gas and electricity to create the family Christmas you want.
