Shame for him

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 19:16

You have a point Andrew although I've always liked Christmas because it meant some time off work and a bloody break. I was fortunate not to work in retail back then and I'm thankful I don't now.

No not everyone likes or celebrates Christmas but I wonder how many of them are expected by employers to volunteer to work so as the employees who do celebrate it can have time off.

I was once told by a former boss that I had to work a bank holiday, can't remember which one, but when I said I wasn't going too she said why not you haven't got children so you can. I said no I don't but I have a life thanks. She presumed because I was childless with no responsibilities I'd be fine with giving up a bank holiday to work. She was disappointed.

ilovesooty · 20/12/2014 19:17

I think some people are understanding what I'm trying to say and some aren't. Those who are talking about people's need to eat a burger and saying that McDonalds or similar being open has no relevance to isolation at Christmas simply aren't.

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy · 20/12/2014 19:17

The hotel my DP works in (and he is scheduled every night from tonight until the 28th or so) has a 24/7 McDonalds just down the road. I imagine he will point the guests and will be having some himself.

I grew up deep in the Bible belt of the States, the image of right wing 'Know the reason for the season', Jesus, crosses and churches everywhere type of area, and we still had restaurants and cinemas and such open on the 25th and on Easter. I've gotten caught out on the everything closed for those days a few times the decade+ I've been here in the UK, it still seems odd to me - not in that people want to break, but that everyone else is brought into it. I had thought Bible-central-US that I had grown up in was Christmas obsessed and frowned on those who didn't conform/buy into it, especially after I stopped bothering with it, but the UK takes it to a whole new level to me. Kinda miss the having cinemas available, but we just do a movie day here instead...

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 19:24

I understand what you are saying ilove - I just disagree with you.

The more shops and fast food outlets that open on Christmas the more people who work in these places there will be who will have their Christmases ruined - unless, of course, working on the 25th would be voluntary, but I doubt that.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 19:32

And I don't think the likes of Mc Donalds, M&S, Next etc give a monkeys who does or not celebrate Christmas or anyone whose lonely they are just after a profit.

usualsuspect333 · 20/12/2014 19:34

As are every other fancy restaurant that opens on Xmas day.

Redglitter · 20/12/2014 19:34

Yes people in the emergency services realise when they take the job it's not a 9 to 5 but believe me it doesn't make it any easier having to work this time of year and missing out on family time.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 19:37

But they close over Christmas and give their staff a break.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 20/12/2014 19:38

They could close I mean.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 19:39

No, it doesn't make it easier for staff who take on jobs which require them to work on the 25th - which is why I wouldnt want to see more people/families being forced into that situation.

usualsuspect333 · 20/12/2014 19:49

You can't object to McDonalds being open just because it's 'junk food' but be perfectly happy for other restaurants to be open.

If you object to one,you object to them all.

Boomtownsurprise · 20/12/2014 19:50

It's ok for Harrods but not McD's? Xmas Confused Xmas Hmm

goldopals · 20/12/2014 19:55

I worked Christmas days at Maccas every year at high school and uni. We were always quiet until seven and were slammd afterwards. It was a fun shift-cleaning and playing around when there were no customers

nancy75 · 20/12/2014 19:55

Harrods is closed on xmas day. Personally I would prefer everything to close xmas day, including pubs and posh restaurants- their staff probably get told to work rather than asked too.

FreudiansSlipper · 20/12/2014 19:59

Harrods isn't open on Christmas day

nancy75 · 20/12/2014 19:59

Although no easier for emergency staff working over Christmas, at least they are doing something that matters. Nobody wants to be in hospital or in a situation that needs an emergency service. people have a choice about eating out or shopping

Owllady · 20/12/2014 20:31

I agree with usual suspect on this
I don't see the difference between McDonald's and any other food place. My family worked in the brewery trade and relied on festive trade, food and otherwise
I think it would be better if nowhere shut at all. Food wise.
I haven't been able to leave the house for weeks because of people frothing at the mouth whilst doing their Christmas shopping and everywhere is shut for one day. Every where is open new years day and boxing day here
I find the hysteria ridiculous

What would Jesus say ffs

Owllady · 20/12/2014 20:33

He's say do a carpentry course, that goes without saying

Anyone stuck for a gift for a male in their family, a carpentry course. It's in keeping and very useful

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 20:46

You haven't been able to leave the house for weeks for hysterical people frothing at the mouth?
You need to move it's not like that anywhere I've ever lived

There's no need for any more families to be split up on Christmas, or individuals being forced to work on a public holiday for the sake of multinational profit. Very few people enjoy working Christmas Day - leave that one day a year alone.

SirChenjin · 20/12/2014 20:49

And btw - carpentry for the males? Things have moved on a bit since Jesus' day - nowadays there are even women who do carpentry. I KNOW!!! Shock

ilovesooty · 20/12/2014 20:49

I'm sick of it taking me twice as long to get home from work because if the hysterical shopping for one bank holiday. I agree with Owllady

I'm glad I'm going away but apart from that I'll be glad when it's January.

Owllady · 20/12/2014 20:50

Oh lucky you. I bet you live in Wales Envy

Owllady · 20/12/2014 20:52

God sorry about my really sexist comment, you are completely right Blush of course women can do carpentry
Lol
