A child has just fingered the open bread in waitrose and then spray sneezed all over them

Yet the mum didn't care she just called him over and said come here. They were well dressed and spoken. Spoke to the staff in waitrose as the mother obviously wasn't going to say all the unpackaged bread has snot sprayed on it. And the staff didn't care either, I said its not fit to sell and they seemed to do nothing.

I will never buy unwrapped bread stuff again!

Is it me or are the people in middle class shops like here and organic shops the rudest?

Anyway not sure what my aibu is, I guess for the mum to care that her child snotted all the bread or for the staff to care. People will be eating snot in north London.

It is unpleasant behaviour but I doubt that apparent social class is relevant.

Same thing goes for buffets.
Couple of years ago we went to a buffet place just before xmas ( we were on holiday ) and ended being really ill over xmas for 2 weeks with severing coughing and sneezing . It was all because this 5 year old was going round the buffet sneezing and coughing and touching everything. We only noticed him when it was too late and we have finished our food. I can't remember a time a was more ill

Honestly, if you saw some of the stuff that goes on behind the deli/bakery/fish counters, you'd never eat again.

Unless you grow your own everything, food will be manhandled, dropped, repackaged, sneezed on, touched by unwashed body parts...

I've had a hard day at work the last thing I want to do is face the wrath of some unhygenic skank.

I once saw a child freely help themselves to the salad bar (hand in, stuff in mouth, repeat, repeat) while their mother stood next to them. I said something and got an earful back.

I've never thought waitrose was middle class before! Mind you, I grew up in a town where it was the only supermarket and I'm definitely not middle class!

On a related note - not worth starting a new thread when it's so close to this one -

Today I was in ASDA and I picked up a bag of Cavalo Negro cabbage leaves which I hadn't realised was open at one end so it unfortunately emptied all over the floor. I took another bag and alerted a nearby assistant to the spill, apologising profusely. I continues with my shopping but was shocked to notice that rather than disposing of the leaves from the floor which is what I'd expected he just picked them up and put them back in the bag and back on the shelf for someone else to buy.

From NorwaySpruce's response above though, this sort of thing is completely normal. Are you saying that if I reported this as a hygiene concern it wouldn't be considered a problem?

You should see where the food gets wrapped. Behind the seems is not much better generally.
I thought waitrose was just normal and fortnums was middle class. The upper class have everything off their estate.

I see adults do it all the time! Bleuch. And don't get me started on the muesli bar in our local healthfood store.

I even saw a kid lick the nozzle of the peanut butter maker dispenser. Do the mums/nannies bother? No they do not. Adults are just as bad.

Which is why I always buy my bread and baked goods pre-wrapped. The child was obvious. The person who came out of the loos without having washed their hands and then picked a few up and put them down again, before you even got there, less so.

Fish, when I buy Cavalo Nero (or any other Brassica, I tend to wash it, then cook it. You cant do that to a crusty cob.

And cabbagy stuff tends to have already spent most of its life being grown in dirts, anyhow.

I live in a low income area (I thought you might find this detail interesting) and I've seen:

• the co-op: flies on the pastries (the big, horrible ones)
• M&S: elderly man opening fruit packages (grapes, strawberries etc) fingering, eating. I was too to say anything.
• Aldi: teenagers picking up pastries, rummaging, comenting, putting them back, all sans tongs
• Tesco: lady picking and fondling every fecking broccoli floret before walking away empty-handed

And that's why I don't buy anything unwrapped.

I am poorly dressed and poorly spoken. I sneeze a lot, especially on bread, fruit, veg and naice ham.

My mate is a minor royal. She doesn't sneeze on bread, but she does pick her nose and flick it in the carvery warmers at the pub. To be fair, she is wearing designer gear at the time, so I think that's ok.
