To think is rude to answer your phone in the middle of a nativity play

Just been to see DD2(5) in her school nativity and one of the mums answered her mobile right in the middle of it, she then scowled at the head teacher to told her to hang up!
AIBU to think that is just so rude!

Of course it's rude. Even if an emergency she should have run out to answer it.

Saying it's rude is like saying the sun is a bit bright. Unforgivable. Mean, self-centred, and entitled.

A polite but firm reminder before the show starts to turn phones off - not on silent, not on vibrate, OFF - is called for.

The head asked us to put ours on silent.
The person who answered the phone might just be rude and selfish but they might have a relative in hospital or another sort of emergency.

Andrew, it was said at the beginning of the play and a short pause given to do it.

I'd have to say 'silent' rather than off. I've had a few emergencies this week and had to deal with things urgently. If my phone had been off, the situation would have been far worse.

However, my DD is not yet at school. I suspect I'll encounter this in about a year. I won't be adverse to joining the PTA and being a PITA.

Of course, being ancient, I remember the days before mobile phones and video cameras when you just sat in the hall and watched the plays!

And who, honestly, wants a DVD of the performance? As a teacher I feel sad when a parent watches the whole thing through the back end of a screen.

I also had to give the stare of death to a parent who answered their phone during the school production after the head had made an announcement! Some people are so completely self centred, it's shocking!

Of course it was rude. Some people think the world revolves around them. They are probably anti-social in many other ways if they think that is acceptable.

I watched DD2's nativity today (year 2). Several of the parents chatted throughout. Not just a few "aw aren't they cute" type comments but full on conversation albeit half whisper that was so distracting. Why bother even going if you're not going to watch or listen? I love watching the kids put their all into their performance. I suppose not all parents feel the same way.
