to ask for part time even if the job is advertised as full time?

Hi, I'm applying for work as a carer at the moment. Most of the positions I've seen are full-time and very demanding hours.

WIBU to apply but stipulate I can only do part time? I am very reliable :)

Is it a particular job adverts you're applying for, or with an agency?

If it's particular job adverts then I'd say apply and go to interview if they offer. If they like you and offer the job then talk about flexible/reduced hours/job share, whatever. If you say that from the off then they'll just dismiss you as unsuitable; you need to impress them first. Of course if they ask a direct question in an interview then do be honest!

If it's an agency, then I'd have a frank conversation with them about what you want as they'll liaise with clients. But be friendly and try not to seem difficult about it, if you can make them your friend they're more keen to find you work

It's for an individual so I'm assuming it's arranged by the family through direct payments.

I can't offer full time but I can do weekends and I'm really hoping if they find someone full time during the week I can pick up some hours at the weekend :)

Not a problem at all to try as long as you make it clear it's part-time only. Nothing ventured etc. etc.

Please just do not wait until you have a job offer and then decide to pipe up you want different hours than advertised - drives me round the bloody twist when people do that!

That must be really annoying Tilly; I have stated I can only work part time so fingers crossed!

14 hour shifts Mon-Fri!

I did this, full time job advertised, went for an interview and asked if they would consider part time. They didn't look very happy and said they'd have to think about it but rang me that evening to offer me the job doing whatever hours I wanted (3 days a week). I reckon it's always worth asking, nothing ventured etc etc.

70 hours a week is pretty full on. They may stand better chance sharing those hours between two or more people.
