Putting up the xmas tree

Sussexbelle73 · 09/12/2014 17:11

I always thought the tree should go up 12 days before xmas. Not as soon as its december (or even end of nov in some cases I have seen)

Aibu or just bah humbug to not want the bloody thing up yet!?! I do like christmas but not for the best part of a month!

Ours went up on Saturday, I never tire of looking at it and am always sad to see it go on 12th Night.

QuinnTwinny · 10/12/2014 00:38

We have always stuck to the 12 days. Unfortunately this year, with the adults of the house all working full time and ds having literally every single weekend filled up until Christmas, as well as several night during the weeks, we had to put ours up last weekend. It felt very strange. I've not put up all of the rest of the decorations though, will put them up the 12 days before as it won't take too long and it makes everything feel a bit more festive.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/12/2014 00:45

The Christian season of Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, which can be between 27 Nov to 3 Dec. People who you think are 'early' with the decorations may actually be fairly religious and marking the start of Advent so YABU to deny them marking the start of their religious festival. A few of my neighbours do this.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/12/2014 00:46

oh and bah humbug OP Grin

QuinnTwinny · 10/12/2014 00:49

I'm catholic and I know no one who does that. I suppose that being in different areas makes a difference as well though. My family who live in a different area of the country do things slightly differently than us.

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/12/2014 00:51

Several folk in Surrey doing it Quinn

ShakesBootyFlabWobbles · 10/12/2014 00:54

And that's why you get advent calendars and candles... although they are generally marked up as 1-24 Dec, rather than matching that actual Advent period for each year.

Topseyt · 10/12/2014 01:02

Christmas humbug here!Grin

Putting up the tree is a job I traditionally give to my daughters when school has broken up. It is often taken down on New Year's Day, if not before.

KeatsieMincePie · 10/12/2014 01:08

Mine's up! I am sitting here in the living room with it right now, just the sparkly lights and the space heater, which is doing its impression of a cosy fire (it's that kind that glows orange). I love having the tree here. But then I've been in the mood for Christmas since about mid-November Xmas Grin

FixItUpChappie · 10/12/2014 03:46

ours went up Sunday and I think we put it up too soon this year. I'm not sure I can sustain the children's excitement (nor mine) for 2 more weeks.

whatsonyourplate · 10/12/2014 04:48

It's my brother's birthday today so we were never allowed to put up the decorations until at least a couple of days after that, and I've stuck to a similar timescale with my own children. Someone on a Facebook group I'm on claimed to have put their tree up on 31st Oct!

CakeAndWineAreAFoodGroup · 10/12/2014 08:55

Ours goes up the weekend before Christmas and comes down New Years Day.

DustInTheWind · 10/12/2014 09:22

We put ours up on the 21st, and down the weekend before the term starts again.
Other members of the family have theirs up from December 1st, but they have a huge house and do a lot of entertaining throughout December and January, and they trim the whole house like a magazine shoot.
You do what suits you, I have relatives that never have a tree

MaryWestmacott · 10/12/2014 09:25

We're putting ours up this weekend. I debated having it ready but not done until DS broke up from school, but decided that was a little too late...

throckenholt · 10/12/2014 09:26

We put ours up on Christmas Eve ! I hate the way Christmas spreads out for months - I enjoy it - but only for a while - not for months.

Each to their own though.

2rebecca · 10/12/2014 09:30

YANBU. We bought ours as otherwise there are none left when we want to put it up but we tend to put it up a week or 2 before Christmas on a handy weekend when we aren't doing anything else. I suspect it will go up on the 20th as we're busy this weekend. I can be lax at taking it down as tend to wait for a handy weekend day after 12th night.

Hatespiders · 10/12/2014 09:32

Ours has been up for ages. It's in our (rather small) front room. We sit looking at it in rapture like a couple of babies. We just adore that tree. It's done in pink and silver this year. What we hate is taking it down after New Year. My dh always sticks the fairy on the top. He says it's an angel, but it's holding a wand. He says angels have wands. I say no they don't. He says have I met one? I say neither have you. We have this daft conversation every blooming year. We love everything about Christmas.

dancestomyowntune · 10/12/2014 09:32

My sister put hers up in November. Crazy!

Ours is going up this Sunday. That's the only day we can fit it in! I don't like having it up too early for several reasons.

  • we have a real tree, so if you put it up too soon it's lost all its needles by the big day.
  • the children and cat would be so excited I don't think I could sustain it!
  • we have little room, and I spend the first two weeks of December doing a big Christmas Dr-clutter.

It also comes down usually by New year's day as we have lots of January birthdays.

LoblollyBoy · 10/12/2014 09:33

Up the weekend before Christmas before children. The weekend before that this year with dd now four. Down in accordance with council/private contractor's disposal schedule. Fourth Jan this year.

HellKitty · 10/12/2014 09:34

Ours went up last Saturday. The rest of our road had their decs up and DP was worried they'd think we were Jehovah's Witnesses.

Chennai · 10/12/2014 09:39

I like Christmas, but couldn't be doing with it lasting for weeks and weeks. We prefer a short, sharp blast of glittery tat here to dragging it out!

We usually put our tree up during the weekend before Christmas and it comes down by 6 Jan, but sometimes a couple of days before.

MoniDubai · 10/12/2014 09:46

Dubai is so Christmasy now! Incredible really, all the Malls have huge trees up, there are "Winter Wonderlands" popping up and Plant Street is doing a rip roaring trade in real fir trees, not cheap though! Carol Concerts in the desert and so on but absolutely NO MULLED WINE at any school events for obvious reasons! HO HO HO !

PrimalLass · 10/12/2014 09:53

I went to carol concert on the dunes in Qatar, years ago Moni. It was lovely and we did have special drinks in flasks

TheMuppetsSingChristmas · 10/12/2014 10:46

Ours goes up the first weekend in December, but we did it on the 30th November this year as it was a Sunday, and comes down the weekend they go back to school, so around 4-6th January.
