To re gift some stuff....

Feeling a bit guilty but I always get things like hand cream and body lotion. I could opens shop with the amount I aquire. Is it so bad to re gift this stuff, or does everyone feel the same way about hand cream and body lotion?

I got hand cream and foot cream from my SiL for my birthday...

...which I'd given her for her birthday.

She's a bi-atch.

I wouldn't be impressed, but then I don't like getting smellies as a present anyway- unless it's Viv Westwood perfume.

One year I got a set of four body lotions in four different scents from someone, and then a set of four different types of moisturiser in one scent from someone else.

I think it's completely reasonable - as long as the person you are giving it to will like it.

DS got given the same Ben 10 puzzle 3 times for his birthday. I bought him something else and used the 2 extras as birthday gifts for his friends.

I don't see the point in wasting some things.

Fragranced hand cream and body lotion brings me out in a rash. You'd think my friends would know this, but I still get given the stuff . I keep it in a drawer & donate it to tombolas or the charity shop.

I always seem to get at least one hand cream and nail file set... it's always the small, soft type of nail file which bends and breaks after the tiniest bit of pressure is put on it, and scented hand cream (which I can't use).

That said, at least I wasn't forgotten about. They do end up sitting in my room then being thrown out after a year or so, though.

I got a set of toiletries from exmil that I suspect has gone through several hands prior to being given to me because it looks very tatty . I will probably pass it on too. It's the thought that counts

Some things I regift (normally candles) others I send to charity shops. I used to keep them but realised the giver wouldn't want me to keep it in a box under the bed!

Yeah, I re-gift things. The people who give me them want to do something nice for me so I reckon they'd be happy that I got use from them even if it wasn't the original purpose.
I'd be happy for them to do that with anything I'd given them (as long as they don't give them back to me!)

Woman's Aid are always looking for unopened toiletry type gift sets to give women who have to flee their home with nothing at x-mas time. Same with children's gifts.

It is hard though to get my local Women's Aid to collect. I have offered them stuff a few times. For obvious reasons you can't deliver and they have never followed through with arrangements to collect. Nice idea though.

Our Woman's Aid don't collect but if you call them they will give you an address for their administration centre where things can be dropped off.

I asked on my local facebay selling site as have a load of unsold-at-fundraiser but good condition cuddlies needing a home. I had several responses includiing someone who also runs a local shop offered to let me drop off to her to preserve the anonymity of the actual refuge. Might be worth you asking on yours if anyone has contacts?

I give mine to the school fair or charity. You see so often on here that you can't go wrong with hand cream for teachers gifts etc but lots of people have a preferred scent or just don't use it.

No. Re-gifting is never acceptable (sorry). If you don't care enough about someone to get them a carefully selected gift then why bother giving them a gift at all. Just be honest and end the cycle of endless giving of tat between families and friends. You get carp because you give carp and we are all so commercialised that we think that we have to give endless gifts.

End the cycle. It is very liberating. Only give gifts to a select few who you really value.

But Simba not all regifting is crap is it? What if you get a really expensive bottle of wine and you don't drink? What if you are given a perfume that you don't particularly like but you know your friend loves it?

Or a beautiful scarf and you have an identical one already? I could go on......

Wine taste is as personal as underwear- it isn't 1 size fits all. Wine as a gift should be as well chosen as anything else.

Perfume- it is unlikely to be their absolute favourite make isn't it- you are saying something that they might like because they like similar.

Scarf- sounds like tat recycling to me- giving anyone an identical scarf to one you have is odd!

To clarify- taking a bottle of wine that you have been give along to a party or dinner- fine.

Giving it as a personal gift to a good friend- not fine.

My aunt gave me a bottle of my favourite perfume once because someone had given it to her and she felt it was too young for her, so yes Simba it does happen

Why would it be odd to give someone a scarf the same as you have? I just don't get it?

I am glad my friends are happy to give me bottles of wine I have never thought of it as a "rude" present to give or receive leftie

HamPortCourt- its not rude - its just not personal and if you dont care enough about someone to give them a personal gift then why bother at all? Wine isnt just wine- most people dont like just anything- they have a favourite wine type.

I am always being asked for raffle/tombola prizes so I would probably give them the unwanted gifts rather than 're-gift' them. Unless I absolutely knew it was something that somebody would genuinely like and as I don't really give many gifts I would more likely just pass it on to them with an honest explanation rather than as a 'gift'.

But yes, charity shops, Food Banks, Womens' refuge etc would all appreciate unwanted gifts.
