Apologies for posting here but the Avon and Somerset police are running an urgent appeal for the safe return of Bristol mum Charlotte Bevan and her four day old baby, who have gone missing from a central Bristol maternity unit and haven't been seen for over 12 hours. PLEASE keep an eye out for her and phone the police if you see her - she's white, around 5'8, dark hair, wearing a black top, black trousers and hospital slippers or flip flops. Her baby is wrapped in a stripey blanket.

Hoping and praying for a safe return sad

Like I said, I was in a private room with an en suite so never left the baby while I was in. In that circumstance I probably wouldn't have wanted a device attached to my new baby.

I was in private rooms with all three of my babies, and they all had electronic ankle bracelets. A private room doesn't prevent someone from coming in while you're asleep or in the restroom, etc. It never would have occurred to me to refuse it. It doesn't hurt the baby, there's really no logical reason to refuse.

Nicknacky · 04/12/2014 13:40

steff13 and that's entirely your call. My door was so bloody noisy that I woke every time someone came in, and that's when I did sleep.

And hospital abductions are such a tiny risk that that would feature in my risk assessment also. That's my logical reasons.

Slight moot point anyway as my hospital don't offer it and if it was a vital security feature then all hospitals would have them.

Poopooplop · 04/12/2014 13:43

I know this is derailing but what of something happened to you nick? You became ill, for example. Either physically or mentally? What if you're the one wanting to take your baby out, rather than kidnappers?

CremeEggThief · 04/12/2014 13:43

Tragic news. My heart goes out to all family and friends.
R.I.P. Charlotte xx.

Nicknacky · 04/12/2014 13:49

How can I possibly answer that? I'm not entirely sure what you mean but this is my reply. But I can't be prevented from leaving with baby without a court order preventing it. Obviously agencies would be contacted to ensure welfare, and rightly, but I couldn't be stopped if I wanted to go.

What are the chances that I go from being perfectly healthy to possibly suicidal/commit infanticide in such a short space of time that no one noticed a change in me? I wouldn't imagine it's very high at all that I would snap in such a way that no one could see an issue.

And we have to remember that hospital security can't prevent every eventuality. The most common issues will be assault, theft, possibly abduction etc. They can't implement measures that will cater for every situation.

Nicknacky · 04/12/2014 13:50

I'm not suggesting she has committed infanticide, I'm just using that as an example of a rapid decrease in mental health in response to the question I was asked.

missknows · 04/12/2014 13:53

Such a sad story.

I gave birth in the same hospital this year (local one don't do sections) and while the care I received couldn't be faulted it is a VERY busy hospital which often ends up 'full' and people being sent to other hospitals. The maternity wards are huge and like I've already mentioned in a previous post, you have to be buzzed in but not out. There are dining rooms for patients to go and collect food at any time of day or night and bathrooms are randomly spread around the corridors so patients would be walking around all the time without it causing alarm.

The nurses station is in the middle too which while convenient for access to rooms means half the patients wouldn't have to pass it to get to the door if that makes sense.

I'm sure after this security will be reviewed.

KnitFastDieWarm · 04/12/2014 14:39

Poor Charlotte, how awful for her family and friends.

AcrossthePond55 · 04/12/2014 14:40

Ah. So sad. But not entirely unexpected that it turns out to be her. Her poor family and partner. There won't be complete closure (if there can ever be, really) until the baby is found.

RIP Charlotte.

WannaBe · 04/12/2014 14:57

Sad but not surprising really.

How strong is the current in the river? Such a tiny baby could presumably easily be washed downstream. And how long will they keep searching I wonder.

Shlurpbop · 04/12/2014 15:04

RIP Charlotte. Love to all her family and friends, and still praying for a miracle for her daughter.

toomanybooksnotenoughspace · 04/12/2014 15:06

GogoGobo · 04/12/2014 15:45

Just had to drive down Bridge Valley Road, connects Clifton to the bottom of the Gorge as it's our route home....private ambulance there and some very somber looking police gathered by the vehicles. What a total tragedy for everyone involved. Just a very sad end to a very sad story.
