There is a neighbour who has taken to smoking in his car with the engine running this last week since the weather has turned cold.

It happens pretty much hourly until 1-2 am. Sometimes he has the radio on also I'd hate to see his petrol bill

It's bloody annoying me as it disturbs me every time and also DS has woken up on occasion too.

WIBU to put a note on his car telling him to pack it in?

What should I say?

It is illegal to leave your engine running? Oh dear, I have done this in the past on very cold mornings to 'defrost' the windows, had no idea it wasn't allowed!

Op, he is the unreasonable one, but not sure what you can really :-(

This would piss me right off. People are so inconsiderate. I would go outside the next time it happens and just say 'do you realise that this is a lot louder than you think, and it's disturbing us?'

I never understand the attitude round MN that if something is legal it must be fine, and it is unreasonable to object. It is perfectly possible to be acting absolutely within the law and still to be totally inconsiderate. And, as people have pointed out, this man's actions aren't legal anyway.

I suspect he just isn't thinking and hasn't realised the effect of his actions on the neighbours. I would hope that a friendly chat would make him stop.

At 2am? YANBU!

I had a similar issue with the lad across the road who'd sit in the car snogging the face off his GF at any time up to 3am with the radio on and engine running. I found his FB account and sent the following message:

"Boy, whilst I appreciate love is blind, it's not deaf. Please can you turn off the engine and the radio as it's keeping us awake. Thanks, Percy."

It worked.
