To think I should be able to buy DS a pine bed for under £200 without fear of him falling through the slats the first time he sleeps in it

DS is 18 and needs a new bed - just a simple pine beds, no frills. Yet this seems impossible. All of them look great, but the problem is the slats are made of flimsy tat wood so won't take adult weigh - DS is not emnormous by any means. Even the one John Lewis advertise on their website has reviews stating the slats are flimsy.

AIBU to expect to be able to buy him such a bed for under £200?

He might be better off with a divan instead of a pine bed. I have always thought pine beds flimsy tbh.

well I think you answer your own question - if you want quality then yes, you'll have to pay for it. Having said that, we have an Ikea Hemnes bed and it supports two adults - have you thought about getting him a double anyway (if the room is big enough)? At some point down the line he'll bring a partner home and then you'd need one anyway.

Me and DH have a combined weight of 35 stone. It is not flimsy

The slats always look flimsy individually. Once you put a mattress on top the weight is spread.

As Skylark says - it will be fine with a mattress.

I have a pine loft bed (double) from here - they made it exactly the size/height I wanted and it is solid as a rock. They do normal bed frames too in all the usual sizes, eg single for £78, double for £115. Downside - they charge £30-£40 for delivery, and their website plays cheesy music.

The pine bunk beds from MFI which are about 15 years' old are still going strong here. I don't think things are as sturdy now.

My oh had a single cheap pine bed when we met. It took our combined weight on 20st perfectly fine. It's probably sturdier than you think. Although at 18 can he not foot some of the bill himself?

When I was looking for pine bunkbeds EVERYWHERE eBay had extra strong slats and thick ones I'm sure the sellers would have one.

Andrew all our MFI stuff has been ok. When I first got married I had a 70's mock teak (lovely) wall unit of my parents' in my house and my dressing table and bedside cabinets are still in tact. I used to quite like it and miss it.

I also liked their home furnishings.

Used to take the dc on a Sunday to get out of the house.
