My lovely sister has posted pictures of her house gorgeously decorated for Christmas. AIBU? I can't even begin to think of doing that until at least sometime in.....i don't know......December perhaps!!

I know christmas is a hard time f many, but to me it is a fighting spirit- that we celebrate in part despite everything not because of it.

My father and husband died a few weeks before christmas, and to me christmas was that small flicker of hope, even in the darkness life persists, that life will continue.

I know that is not possible for everyone, but christmas helped me through the dark times too.

bigbluestars · 29/11/2014 09:15

whowillsaveyoursoul- thanks.

Is it the "enforced happiness" that is the problem? Can you consider the more spiritual aspects of christmas?
I am not a christian, but I find christmas a meaningful time, I can focus on the things I do have in my life, not the things I don't have. I have a warm home, a roof over my head, enough to eat, enough money to gift those I love.
To me it is a celebration of life. I don't have wild parties, I will quietly light a candle on the 21st to mark the solstice, and I will have christmas too.

whowill- I am sure your child would appreciate a few decorations- could you do it for his sake?
Have you spoken to anyone about how you are feeling.

mypoorbottee · 29/11/2014 11:32

Yes. But the name of the month should give you the biggest clue.

gamerchick · 29/11/2014 11:33

I do understand not wanting to bother when you're having a hard time.. This year has been spent in the bowels of hell for us. But surely it's all the more reason to try pull out all the stops to give the kids in the middle of it a breather and something to look forward to?

mypoorbottee · 29/11/2014 11:33

Sorry by "give you the biggest clue" I mean in the sense of "give one the biggest clue" :)

Piccarcas · 29/11/2014 11:44

When I was young we always did ours as a family, on Christmas Eve before Mass. I kept that going with my Children and now they have left home and have families of their own they still come on Christmas Eve to do the tree. I do think it is each to their own though as everyone has different needs and preferences.

HelloitsmeFell · 29/11/2014 11:45

Yes.

CalamityGem · 29/11/2014 13:32

Bigbluestars, it's really inspiring to read your post, I hope this Christmas time continues to uplift you. Whowillsaveyoursoul, Christmas isn't for everyone I know, but I hope this Christmas is better than you are expecting x

and shouldn't be judged

Where's the fun in that? Wink

HelloitsmeFell · 29/11/2014 14:16

well, quite ginny. Surely that's what we come here for? Grin

Mammanat222 · 29/11/2014 14:22

Tree up next weekend for us, that's actually a bit earlier than normal but we're faking it this year (normally we get a real tree!) so the tree will last.

LittleBearPad · 29/11/2014 14:26

Ours will go up this weekend. Unusually early (would usually wait another fortnight) but DC2 is due in the next week so I'd rather it was up and done for DD.

polyhymnia · 29/11/2014 14:31

For me, far too early, except for advent calendar and the odd poinsettia. I think decorating closer to the day makes it more special but each to their own and each family ( however defined) tends to develop its own particular traditions for Christmas.

WUME · 29/11/2014 14:39

The idiots that put them up early are always the ones desperate to get them down on boxing day.

Ours go up late and stay up till new years.

Much nicer to have the whole of the festive period with decorations up than have them up before December even starts.

PogoBob · 29/11/2014 14:44

We're putting them up today, largely because DD is excited (4yo) about Christmas this year. It's December on Monday and we have various Christmas activities planned during advent as I find the build up to Christmas as important as the day.

I'm also one of the idiots that take them down 'early' as we've got DH and DS birthdays between Christmas and NYE so like to switch across to birthday celebrations so that DS' day isn't overshadowed by Christmas.

YANBU to think it's too early for you but you are YABU to say what is or isn't right for other families.

November Shmovember Grin

Is 28th November too early to decorate house?
KingJoffreysDodgyEars · 29/11/2014 15:00

Ours will go up on the 18th or 19th. Presents can then go straight under it.

DS breaks up from school on the 17th, once he's home Christmas can 'start'.

:)

furcoatbigknickers · 29/11/2014 15:01

Before dec too early. Dd1 bday is 11th dec,,,,,,so we put it up after that.

captainBeaky · 29/11/2014 15:16

I just don't understand why people get so worked up about this. So you don't want to decorate yet? Don't do it. You quite like the cosy element and feeling festive? Go ahead. Does it really affect you what other people are doing? Your sister obviously wanted to put the decorations up because it pleases her. Why on earth have you started a thread about it?

ginnycreeper5 · 29/11/2014 15:42

We put ours up mid December.
But I try not to put the presents under the tree till the very last minute.

Piling the presents up under the tree isn't a good idea and then going out for the day is a bad idea.
Especially if you're tree is in a window.

You're making it too easy for burglars. (all the goodies are nice and convenient in a pile - they don't even have to go hunting around) Shock

ginnycreeper5 · 29/11/2014 15:42

your tree.

simbacatlivesagain · 29/11/2014 16:24

Well its a class thing isn't it- like everything else in life.

ghostyslovesheep · 29/11/2014 16:30

12th this year - my youngest has a birthday on Dec 6th and refuses to let Jesus muscle in on her special time Grin

I've always put mine up on or around the 18th but the kids made me do it a bit earlier - so it's on or around the 12th/13th - down on 2nd Jan

I like a real tree and I suspect if I put it up now it would be a brown stump by the 25th

bigbluestars · 29/11/2014 16:36

simbacat- a brave point.

OneSkinnyChip · 29/11/2014 16:54

We always put ours up 2nd weekend in December but we are away for the next couple of weeks and it will feel a faff then. Also we are always away for Christmas and New year so never get much time to enjoy it.

So, we are putting ours up tonight. I am a bit Blush about it but DD is really excited. Might keep the blinds closed until 1st Dec so the neighbours don't judge us Grin
