Nc but regular.

I have a friend that was lucky enough to get a council flat in pimlico when she was unemployed and single with two kids.

Now she has moved out of it but is subletting the entire flat and manages to make more money a month than I do sloging my guts out in a job I hate.

As you might of guessed maybe she isn't a friend, more a friend of friend. But would it be wrong to tell on her?

I would love a council flat, but seems like I've got a better chance of winning the lottery so this rubs it right in my face.

No question at all.
Apart from the criminal aspect, there is a family waiting on a list for that flat.
Report it today.

ApprenticeViper · 28/11/2014 10:52

YWNBU

Social housing isn't there for the tenant to make a profit from. Please make that call today.

wowfudge · 28/11/2014 10:52

It stinks when people do things like that. If you want to tell on her, do so.

KateeGee · 28/11/2014 10:53

I'd report it, no question.

oldgrandmama · 28/11/2014 10:56

What she's doing is outrageous. Definitely report it.

GratefulHead · 28/11/2014 10:57

I always err on the side of caution with the benefit threads but not on this one. There is a massive wait for social housing in London and she is greedily depriving someone if a home. Report her, I'd have no problem do this in your position either,

Tobyjugg · 28/11/2014 10:59

Report it. This really is a public duty. There are people suffering because that flat is unavailable. Do someone a favour for Xmas, give them a council flat - 'cos that's what you'll be doing.

OwlCapone · 28/11/2014 11:00

Absolutely report it. I remember watching a BBC documentary about it - it's very common.

TrendStopper · 28/11/2014 11:00

I would report her.

I do find MN interesting. OP is being told to report without a second thought but OPs who come on and ask whether they should report someone for benefit fraud they are told to mind their own business.

lucidlady · 28/11/2014 11:01

Report!

Mmolly2013 · 28/11/2014 11:04

Before reporting because she gets caught she could be prosecuted and she has two children to look after.

IS there a way it could be mentioned maybe annoymous or perhaps not that you are giving her the opportunity to do the right thing and if she doesnt then you will report it.

i know thats sounds mad but she has two children, but you be happy if she got arrested for it without giving her a chance

squoosh · 28/11/2014 11:05

Definitely report her. She's making a hefty wedge of cash from this while the list of people desperately waiting on a council flat grows ever longer. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

SunnyBaudelaire · 28/11/2014 11:06

i would - there are families living in one room b and b for years because of greedy people like her.
Just because someone has two children doesn't mean they are above the law molly

listsandbudgets · 28/11/2014 11:06

Report . There could be a family living in one room in bed and breakfast or a hostel who should be living in that flat.

I do feel sorry though for the subletters who may not be aware of the full situation

Jackie0 · 28/11/2014 11:06

I'm not sure op.
Will it make you feel better?

listsandbudgets · 28/11/2014 11:07

Cross posted same point with sunny

PeachyParisian · 28/11/2014 11:08

I was expecting everyone to tell you to mind your business!
Ultimately social housing is in very short supply and it isn't for her to decide who the tenant is, it's for the council based on a waiting list.

She most certainly should not be making a profit, not on at all.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 28/11/2014 11:09

It is a disgusting thing to do when people are homeless...entire families living in one room!

OwlCapone · 28/11/2014 11:13

Yes, she has two children to look after but then you have this It is a disgusting thing to do when people are homeless...entire families living in one room!

InfinitySeven · 28/11/2014 11:13

She is unlikely to go to jail with two children reliant on her. That is the reality.

If she did, though, it would be her own fault. She is selfishly depriving people of the flat that helped her get back on her feet. She used the system, got out of it and is now abusing it and denying other people and children that chance.

There is no decent excuse for that. There is no excuse whatsoever.

OwlCapone · 28/11/2014 11:14

There are other types of benefit fraud where I would pause and think but this is directly penalising someone else.

squoosh · 28/11/2014 11:18

I agree Owl, I'd hesitate in other situations but this just seems so clear cut.

JamNan · 28/11/2014 11:19

dob her in
Surely she must know it's fraudulent.

MaryWestmacott · 28/11/2014 11:23

This isnt a crime against the state, this is a crime against a family who can't afford a home. The person renting at "more money a month than I do sloging my guts out in a job I hate" is not someone who'd struggle to pay for a private rental in a different part of London. You might also be doing them a huge favour as they might not realise they are illegally subletting and not realise they have no/little tenant rights.

this isn't a victimless crime, if everyone subletting in London were 'dobbed' in, the waiting lists for council properties would be moving a lot faster.

Get her reported.

FishCanFly · 28/11/2014 11:24

Report for sure. This is really a horrid thing to do.
