To do my own stocking?

It's our first christmas at home with just me, DH & the kids. Before we've always been at my parents or ILs. At their houses, adults & kids all get stockings. Adult stockings have eg chocolates, tangerine, shower gel, chutneys, shave gel, post it notes etc.
Parents sort out kids stockings.
DH is not into presents. Buying or receiving. I know this about him. Which is fine. I'm doing stockings for the kids and for DH. I've dropped hints to DH that he should sort out mine.
I've told him directly.
He thinks it shouldn't be important to me. To be fair to him, he works very hard, very long hours and has no time for shopping.
AIBU to buy bits and pieces that I need for my stocking- shower gel, razor blades etc as well as chocolates and a few treaty bits?
Or is that a bit weird?
If I don't get a stocking at all my kids will want to know why.

Weird to who? Do it if you want.

Well, you'll know what's inside the stocking so it won't be much of a surprise.

It would be things that I will be buying anyway. But in a way, I will choose slightly nicer things because they're going in my stocking.

I'm doing my own stocking! Mostly because there's just me and ds and I don't want him to think Santa hates me or anything, but actually, I've found myself getting quite excited about it. I never buy stuff for myself and it feels really special to have some treats.... I'm such a saddo aren't i? I just read that back to myself! Hey ho!

I do this. I get what I want, sometime DH will pop something in. He is generous but crap at buying presents.

You do think it's important so he should be bending over backwards to do it for you.

If he had to do it for a Secret Santa at work, would he? If so, why is a colleague more important than you?

No Sillymilly it sounds entirely right to me!
Rather than buying the cheapest shower gel, I will spend a bit of time choosing something nice!
And the fact that Im not the only person doing their own stocking makes me feel better about it for some reason!
I think it's partly that (even though I'm mid 30s) this is our first Christmas at home. Where I'm in charge of everything.

I don't do myself a stocking, but I do buy myself lots of stuff which I then give to dh. He then tells the kids he bought it all for me, they have fun wrapping it and I am 'surprised' on Christmas Day with lots of things that I really want. Everyone's a winner.

I do get proper presents from him too.

How old are your kids? Could you give them a small budget and have them pick something cute for you next time your out shopping? (With hints of course!)

Seriously though, Im not sure when he last went into a shop. He just doesn't have the time.
He is generous in many ways. He's just really not good at presents.

Last year someone on MN posted about her family tradition of "panthead". You have to wear your stocking pants on your head, until they are replaced by a cracker crown.

I have bought pants for everyone in the family, even me. I would be devastated if I didn't get to wear pants on my head, and everyone else did.

So, YANBU, but only if you promise to put pants in everyone's stockings and make them wear them on their heads.

I have really strong memories of choosing things for my mums sticking from quite young- as soon as I knew that Father Christmas wasn't real me & my sis helped to get stuff for my mums stocking along with my dad.

sanityclause up till this year my kids have always had new lanes in their stockings- I hadn't thought of giving myself some!

Do you have any friends in a similar position? My best friend & I decided we would swap a small budget & buy things we knew the other would like for a stocking with a surprise.

When my dc's were that age we used to take them into pound land and tell them to pick 10 things for mummy and 10 things for daddy and just buy whatever they picked.

Do you have anyone who could take them shopping to do something like that? Even just round the shop while you wait outside?

Though you will end up with some strange stuff. I once got a spanner and some size 10 insoles.

I think I will buy bits and pieces for my stocking- that way if DH doesn't get anything I'll still have one, and if he he does it'll be a lovely extra surprise.

He does have time to shop though, if he wanted to. No one is too busy to do online shopping.

Add a load of stuff you like on an Amazon wishlist, and tell him you want to be surprised with presents for your stocking. Then he can take the 5 minutes or so to do that.

Stick in a kinder egg / lucky bag so there are things in it which are a surprise.

Or wrap up bits for your stocking asap so you have time to forget what they are.

Oh crappyday they are old enough!! Do your own stocking then send them into £ land and let them buy for you, dh etc - get a friend to take them, then you do the same for her. No adult input allowed and the fact that they can buy what they want is fab!! My two loved it and also revealed some interesting ways in which they thought about people! " I'm getting this fir X because she...." Or when 4yo dd bought everyone naff nail varnish nestled in black 'satin' in a very elaborate gift pack!!!
