.... the Channel Tunnel was actually tunnelled into the bedrock under the seabed and isn't just a pipe on the seabed?

I genuinely thought they had just dug under and out into the sea and plugged a pipe in there....

I used to work in the call centre booking people onto the trains; the amount of numpties lovely people who asked "can we see the fishes?" was staggering.

But seriously, think you'd see fishes in the Channel? More like turds and some rusty luxury cars from that sunken container many years ago!

What about gas from abroad like from Russia? Are there actual pipes bringing gas over here? How does it work?

It comes over as liquid gas by sea in tankers. There's a major facility at Milford Haven in Wales where they unload and that's where the pipelines start.

The gas we've agreed to buy from Quatar from 50 years will be frozen and shippped to Milford Haven where it will be defrosted and piped around the country.

The area of land that has been reclaimed from the sea off the coast of Quatar to facilitate our new gas supply is, I think, the single biggest piece of reclaimed land in the world.

There is an area called Samphire Hoe (sp?) near Dover which is actually the newest piece of land in the UK. Formed by all the seabed extracted when the Channel Tunnel was built.

I had this very discussion on our way to France two years ago. My H couldn't get over that I thought it was a pipe.
