To think that people who interrupt people who are reading are really, really bloody rude.

Scenario; sat eating lunch, reading happily. Woman from work exclaims 'oh, are you eating on your own? l'l sit with you!' and then without waiting for me to answer plonks herself down with a big smile and starts eating, clearly expecting me to talk to her.
I, carry on reading. When she is finished she gets up and says in a snarky fashion 'well that was enlightening, thank you'
I reply, 'its nothing personal, I just like to read on my own at lunch.' (thinking, hence why i was sat on my own, reading) She says, 'well just so you know I got rid of 4000 books before I moved here'. ?

there's another one that does it too. says hi, asks if i'm having a nice day (to which i politely say hi, yes thank you) and then proceeds to ask me about what i'm reading. and so i have to stop reading and talk.

It really winds me up, which is why today i just sat reading instead of starting a conversation like she clearly expected.

What is it about these people that makes them think that their time and what they want is more important than my time and what i want?

Raaarrrgghhhhhh

yanbu!

However I did this once to a guy in my office and he told me rather politely, 'Do you mind! I'm reading!'

Ten years later and we're married so he forgave my unreasonable behaviour Grin

RevoltingPeasant · 24/11/2014 20:51

YANBU. That is all!

Niamhisnotarealname · 24/11/2014 20:53

hearthwitch are you my mum? lol

tak1ngchances · 24/11/2014 20:56

I would say, "hi you're very welcome to sit there but I'm at a juicy part in my book so I won't be much company!" Broad smile, back to book

MiniLop · 24/11/2014 20:58

YANBU! It annoys me too, although I rarely read at work. If there's someone in our kitchen at work reading while having their lunch, I'll always say hello when I walk in, if they want to chat I'll let them start the conversation. Otherwise it ends at hello!

teamboleyn · 24/11/2014 21:03

No free coffee Princess but sometimes there's cake and biscuits left over from meetings in the kitchen! GrinGrinGrin

sonjadog · 24/11/2014 21:08

This happens to me at work too. I deliberately sit in the far corner of the staffroom away from everyone else, but people come and join me anyway. I tell them as soon as they come over that I want to read the paper. Some people move off, some people read the paper too, but there are always some who sit down and start chatting. I'm sure they think I am very rude, because I ignore them.

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 24/11/2014 21:08

I'm there!

LittleBairn · 24/11/2014 21:12

YABU it was rude to continue reading.
If I had contined reading my book instead of answering the guy next to me I wouldn't be married now.

sonjadog · 24/11/2014 21:13

If I am 100% sure I don't want to marry any of the people I work with, can I continue reading my book?

UsedtobeFeckless · 24/11/2014 21:14

Are you me? Grin I hide at lunchtime - I hate it when people join me, I have my game face on all day ( That's what they pay me for ... ) but lunch time is mine to disappear back inside my head!

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 24/11/2014 21:16

I hate it when I'm disturbed reading, DH is the fucking worse.

HadleyHemingway · 24/11/2014 21:20

IMO it's the same as turning off the TV in the middle of a programme someone was watching.

Maddening.

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 24/11/2014 21:27

usedtobe the irony is I was always fantastic with the customers (call centre) but my oh so sociable coworkers often couldn't be arsed to put themselves out for the people they were paid to help. Grrr.

UsedtobeFeckless · 24/11/2014 21:33

Princess Same here! Grin ... But I need to recharge or I turn back into Grendel's Mum -

Like the user name ... Cabin Pressure fan?

BlueBrightBlue · 24/11/2014 21:38

Put yourself in her shoes; perhaps she was lonely and craved some human contact.

Icimoi · 24/11/2014 21:38

Some sweet young thing in our office interrupted me when I was reading in the canteen the other day to invite me to join him and his friends. I'm sure it was kindly meant and very friendly, but I could think of nothing worse than going to make enforced conversation with them, and actuality I'm certain they didn't really want me there cramping their style. So I had to pretend that I was about to leave for some urgent appointment, which was a real shame - I'd just got to an interesting bit in my book.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 24/11/2014 21:56

burgatroyd that's lovely :)

Niamh I think you were more rude than her. She was looking for a bit of company, it wouldn't have killed you to say 'Sorry, do you mind not sitting there, I'm reading/not feeling too great and just need half an hours quiet before going back in'.

Like you, I like to read and if I'm reading I'm not looking for company - but, not everyone is the same. She might only read if she feels self conscious sitting alone, not for enjoyment.

It would have only taken you a few seconds...

crumblebumblebee · 24/11/2014 22:19

She was rude but you were equally rude back. Quite shocking how nasty people can be really!

SoMuchForSubtlety · 24/11/2014 22:30

sonja Grin

Yackity · 24/11/2014 22:34

Buy some headphones and pretend you're listening to something while you're reading. Then can safely ignore them by pretending you haven't heard them.

At the most you can look up, give a half hearted smile, and then look straight down.

PrincessTheresaofLiechtenstein · 24/11/2014 22:42

Yes indeed, used ! Am hoping for a happy ending for me & Martin on Christmas Eve Wink

UsedtobeFeckless · 24/11/2014 22:53

Form an orderly queue ... Wink

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 24/11/2014 22:58

Crumble Nasty? Nasty?

Grin That's not nasty!

ModerationInEverything · 24/11/2014 23:04
