To never buy women's socks for myself ever again?

PacificDogwood · 21/11/2014 16:26

I just bought these for myself - I'm sitting here with the blue pair on Grin

Bright colours - all the casual men's socks have colours that I like (I had sock envy when I last bought socks for DS1…)

Women's sock are all either a. black (fair enough - one needs black socks), b. Christmassy (again, fair enough, not my cup of tea, but I accept they have a market, or c. ALL various shades of pink/purple/mauve/grey/cream/rose/lilac/you get the picture.

I don't object in the least to these shades (like the Christmas socks, not my cup of tea, but great to be able to get those colours if you like them), what I object to is the lack of choice!!

Really riles me.
Yes, First World problem - I do have insight in to what I am raging against Grin

My bugbear with socks is the fact that no matter which (ladies) ones I buy they always end up really tight around by ankle/leg and leave a massive indentation. My legs are slim too so God knows how people with fatter or more muscular legs cope.

Maybe mens socks are the answer?

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 21/11/2014 19:50

ozne yes! I'm a size 8 ffs! I have massive feet. They're a mare' to shoe in anything glam.

stubbornstains · 21/11/2014 20:03

For God's sake ladies! Be careful! If you wear any socks outside the prescribed lady colours of pink, grey or mauve, you run the risk of (lowers voice) catching gay.

(currently wearing turquoise men's socks from ASDA. Other unforgivably butch colours in the 4- pack I purchased were orange, yellow and lime green).

(oh, and don't forget to stock up on lady pens too, while you're doing the weekly shop for your man and kiddies: www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B004FTGJUW?tag=mumsnet)

DayLillie · 21/11/2014 20:16

Norbert - I have the same problem with ladies socks and have skinny legs. I have to wear them folded over so that the tight bit goes over my ankle bone.

I am thinking of trying men's knickers in the hope of a decent gusset, but have not told DH yet. (He doesn't notice the tarty lace ladies ones so probably won't see a difference.)

Trumpity · 21/11/2014 20:17

I'm a 9 and women's socks are fine.

Catypillar · 21/11/2014 20:19

Why did I never think of this?

NorahBone · 21/11/2014 20:19

Norbert I never buy men's socks because my Mr Tickle socks (men's, judging by the size), used to leave elastic marks on my legs. I don't have particularly chunky calves either. You can get ones with 'soft tops' for delicate lady ankles; I've bought some in TK Maxx

Redcoats · 21/11/2014 20:24

The only women's socks I own were bought for me. I'm a size 7.
I buy big packs of black socks and DH and I share.

Oldraver · 21/11/2014 20:27

My OH is a size 6 and narrow feet so buys from the childrens range as they do 4-6 1/2... he finds them a better fit than the mens 6-7 1/2

And they do bright colours

PickledLilly · 21/11/2014 20:39

I'm a size 3, I have to buy boys socks as ladies apparently all have size 4-7 feet. I regularly see lovely ladies socks which I can't buy as they don't make them small enough, it makes me cross.

TheFirstOfHerName · 21/11/2014 20:40

I made the mistake of trying Bridgedale socks, and now I can never go back. Luckily they last forever.

For those who find the sock top too constricting, try a sock with a honeycomb top.

NorbertDentressangle · 21/11/2014 20:52

Glad I'm not the only one with elastic lines around my legs!

I will look for "soft tops" for my delicate lady legs in future. Smile

wigglybeezer · 21/11/2014 20:59

I am the only girl in my family, I just wear the DS's grown out of school socks, I'm a size 8 so women's socks are too small anyway. We basically have a giant heap of communal socks that are rarely pared up correctly.

Is it wrong of me to be somewhat bemused that this thread has taken off?
There is clearly a greater sock issue here than I had appreciated when I started the thread mildly pleased with my purchase…

I so need to introduce a 'sock box' or something in out house - socks breed and are all different shades and sizes of black and muggins here sits and sorts them all out Hmm

I don't iron though!

Happy socks look lovely but £8 for a pair of socks!!!!!!!!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 22/11/2014 10:40

PacificDogwood: The sock issue is MASSIVE. I posted a while ago about the continual theft of my 9-12 size socks by DW & DD, both of whom take 7s.

Last night, as if in response to this thread, they came home with mens socks, correctly sized, gaily coliured and purchased for money.

Hallelujah!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 22/11/2014 10:40

Arrgh! Coloured!

Disgrace, your relief is palpable!

I wonder whether I should petition No10 or something?!

'Men and women of this country are crying out for sock provision in all sizes and all colours' - it could be become the issue of the next general election campaign!!

I'm wearing men's tennis socks with the Wimbledon logo on.

Kewcumber · 22/11/2014 10:52

I have size 9 feet so little choice but men's..m.marksandspencer.com/mt/www.marksandspencer.com/7-pairs-of-cotton-rich-freshfeet-textured-diamond-socks-with-silver-technology/p/p22317549

These are lovely

BertieBotts · 22/11/2014 11:00

Where are you all buying socks?! I buy from H&M and have all colours - red, grey, green, blue, etc.

Kewcumber · 22/11/2014 12:15

But do they have them in a 9?

BertieBotts · 22/11/2014 14:37

No idea, sorry. I'm a bog standard 4-7.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 22/11/2014 15:43

I have come to the conclusion that it's yet another thing where no matter what size you are, you can't win.

I'm a 4, just, more a large 3. I have given up on women's socks because they're too big. I buy kids socks, but I would like to be able to buy womens socks. I see some really nice ones (not pink/pastel/lilac) and some lovely wools and textures (cashmere for example) but I know there's just no point.

Mens... not a hope.

So kids socks it is. Gap are good.

I think it's just a case of the grass always being greener!

PacificDogwood · 22/11/2014 16:14

I'll start that petition just for you, Chipping Grin

All colours, all sizes, for men and women
