To never buy women's socks for myself ever again?

PacificDogwood · 21/11/2014 16:26

I just bought these for myself - I'm sitting here with the blue pair on Grin

Bright colours - all the casual men's socks have colours that I like (I had sock envy when I last bought socks for DS1…)

Women's sock are all either a. black (fair enough - one needs black socks), b. Christmassy (again, fair enough, not my cup of tea, but I accept they have a market, or c. ALL various shades of pink/purple/mauve/grey/cream/rose/lilac/you get the picture.

I don't object in the least to these shades (like the Christmas socks, not my cup of tea, but great to be able to get those colours if you like them), what I object to is the lack of choice!!

Really riles me.
Yes, First World problem - I do have insight in to what I am raging against Grin

If I were one size bigger I'd always wear men's shoes too. More room for my "deep" toes.

Tournesol · 21/11/2014 16:45

I tried to buy socks the other day and had just this problem! All the women's socks were cutesy which is so not my style.

But with size 5 feet I might try boy's childrens's socks, good tip pacific

HugeFurryKnittingBalls · 21/11/2014 16:50

I don't know why I haven't bought myself mens socks up until now especially as I have always bought both girls and boys clothes for my two dds (although I don't tell them Wink )

I'll definitely be perusing the men's sock aisle next time I have the need.

PacificDogwood · 21/11/2014 16:51

Tournesol, my feet are now a good 0.5-1 size bigger than they were BC (before children), so most of my adult life I was a size 5 and always felt I had to 'buy up' a size - I only rarely tumble dry anything, but washing alone seemed to shrink them.

DS3(6) just got nice stripy M+S socks (kids size 12), they go up to a 5 I think - might be worth a look.

I've got these on at the moment, they are ultra comfy and my relaxing socks.

DayLillie · 21/11/2014 17:00

I am a size 5

I used to buy mens cotton socks in the 1980s, when pastels for men were in. They used to shrink to fit after a couple of washes, unlike the ladies versions which shrank to not fit.

I have bought mens merino wool socks because they go up further and you don't seem to be able to buy them for women (except expensive cashmere, which I have for best Grin.

BabCNesbitt · 21/11/2014 17:01

Scorned, doh, of course! and I bet I can get Lego socks then

PacificDogwood · 21/11/2014 17:05

Oh gawd, yes, they are longer as well - soooo snuggly Grin

I'm well chuffed, can you tell?!

I like smart price mens black socks. perfect.

sorry but you do realise that your womb will drop out if you wear a pair of red socks! at least I think that is the theory...

PacificDogwood · 21/11/2014 17:27

OMG! Really?!

Mine must have dropped out several times over the years then… Grin

Red happens to be my favourite colour.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/11/2014 17:28

quite frankly it must be something that serious for them to not make red socks for women. Grin either that or they are stereotyping arses

Erebus · 21/11/2014 17:46

DS, 15, started nicking my work socks; usually with a black 'upper' and something a bit more colourful on the sole and toe. As his feet grew (bigger than mine!); I began to get annoyed that his toenails were wearing out the toe of my socks, so I attempted to thwart him by getting ever more girly socks- still black-ish above, though with some decoration creeping in around the cuff; but I had pink hearts, neon cherubs, pale blue butterflies, yellow flowers, etc etc adorning the rest of the sock.

He wears them with pride.

YANBU - I have changed to buying men's trainer socks as they don't slip down inside my trainers and they are much more hardwearing. I also just inherited some of DS's black school socks which he never really wore as he grew too fast and decided that white sports socks are the way to go!

mum9876 · 21/11/2014 17:59

YANBU I've been wearing mens ones for a while now. Because my feet are size 7 and I just find the women's ones too tight. I like my socks loose and with some shrinkage room after being tumble dried.

APipkinOfPepper · 21/11/2014 18:06

YANBU - as a size 8 I generally wear men's socks, the womens socks are always a bit small. I quite like the black with coloured toes and heels too - but unfortunately so does DS, when his feet are a bit bigger I'm not sure what we'll do!!

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 21/11/2014 18:26

I also wear men's socks. They seem to fit better!

CaulkheadUpNorth · 21/11/2014 18:30

stealth boastI'm wearing one hand knitted pink one like that. Only one though because I never got round to knitting the other.

fatlazymummy · 21/11/2014 18:52

I'm a size 7 and I find womens socks fit me. I only buy those fluffy ones out of Primark though, and I've got them in most colours.

ShelaghTurner · 21/11/2014 19:02

I don't care what gender they're for, I just want the bloody things not to end up squished in the toe of my boot or upside down so the heel bit is on top of my foot.

Lemuriformes · 21/11/2014 19:15

I'm a size 8.5 and have worn men's socks pretty much for ever. Also, how come nearly all women's socks are in shoe size 4-7 (thanks for making me feel like I have big feet - most good shoe makers have been doing women's size 9 for years...) or one size fits all (and hasn't fitted me since I was 12)?Men get about four different sizes. As well as the pretty colours and patterns. So YADNBU.

TheSkiingGardener · 21/11/2014 19:20

I have size 9 feet but don't like long men's socks. So I'm buggered really. Does anywhere do ankle high socks for men or for big feeted women?

Ozne · 21/11/2014 19:24

Didn't you know, all "women" have feet sized 4 to 7?

Sock sellers, get with the programme! There are women with feet that are bigger than that, and there are men with small feet too, and socks don't need to be gendered.

Lemuriformes · 21/11/2014 19:36

Oh fab. Those are brilliant!

Dragonfly71 · 21/11/2014 19:44

I never buy socks, just wear dh's. He used to moan about it but has given up and just buys extra now!
