Aibu to think a roast dinner doesn't necessarily need roast potatoes?

Title says it all really. For me so long as you have a roasted bit of meat on the go and maybe some roasted veggies, well then that's fair enough to constitute a roast. Is it just me who thinks roast potatoes are abit unnecessary?

Mash? Mash? With a roast dinner?

It is then not a roast dinner.

This is the most unreasonable post I have ever seen on MN. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/11/2014 16:34

Oh and don't get me started on the ultimate abomination - cauliflower cheese with a roast.

Chattymummyhere · 20/11/2014 16:34

Yabvu

It's not a roast without roast potatoes...

Twitterqueen · 20/11/2014 16:35

Really, truly Shock that you should even think such a thing, let alone post it. The only reason anyone has a roast joint of meat (or veggie) is for the potatoes! and the roasted carrots, parsnips etc etc.

YABVVVVVVVVV U Smile

LittleBearPad · 20/11/2014 16:35

Yabu. Mashed potato has no place in any roast dinner. Roast potatoes are essential.

Crumblevision · 20/11/2014 16:38

I call Troll. Grin. OP YABVVV U.

Catsmamma · 20/11/2014 16:39

roasties AND mash or it's not a real dinner.

I get away with lamb and dauphinoise without too much comment, but as a mother I can feel their disappointment in my terrible mother soul.

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 20/11/2014 16:40

Yabu, you can pretty much have any meat you like, any veg and you can choose Yorkshires or not, but the one thing that you definitely need are decent roast potatoes, oh and gravy. You can put them with sausages, chicken, lamb, beef or even a veggie alternative and you have roast dinner. It's all about the texture, you need the crispy fluffiness of a roast potato to contrast with the soft meat and veg. Mash is just mush.

ShatnersBassoon · 20/11/2014 16:40

Roast potatoes are essential to a roast dinner. No amount of bonus vegetables could ever replace a lovely pile of roast potatoes.

Fevertree · 20/11/2014 16:40

Whaaaaaaat! No roasties = not a roast. Fact.

Also totally agree with pp re: veg. Steamed only please, roasted veg is lovely but not as part of a roast dinner.

DidoTheDodo · 20/11/2014 16:41

I don't eat meat so the roast potatoes ARE the roast. YABU.

Bakeoffcakes · 20/11/2014 16:41

TROLL!!

It's the only explanation for such a terrible suggestion!

GerundTheBehemoth · 20/11/2014 16:41

What a provocative thread! Roast potatoes are the cornerstone, the lodestar, of the roast dinner.

Sidge · 20/11/2014 16:42

A roast dinner is not a roast dinner without roasties and Yorkshire pudding, regardless of what meat/veggie alternative is served with it.

Mash is OK, but it's an extra and no replacement for roasties.

TheHoundsBitch · 20/11/2014 16:42
Shock
AMumInScotland · 20/11/2014 16:43

Roast potatoes and gravy are essential. I'd rather skip the meat than lose the roasties!

BitOutOfPractice · 20/11/2014 16:43

YY to no roasted veg (apart from parsnips and carrots) with a roast dinner. Don't give me roast courgettes or stuff like that with a roast.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/11/2014 16:43

OP - can open, worms everywhere!

annoyedofnorwich · 20/11/2014 16:43

Mmm I think that's fairly unanimous! Yabvvvvu!

fourwoodenchairs · 20/11/2014 16:43

Yabu, but you know that.

PrettyLittleMitty · 20/11/2014 16:45

This is the most clear cut aibu ever. No roast pots? YAB barking mad!

mrspremise · 20/11/2014 16:45

The only way I would ever consider forgiving a lack of roasties would be their being substituted with a pile of homemade Yorkshire puddings... but I'd still want both Grin

MummyBeerest · 20/11/2014 16:46

I came on here to say YABU. But, seeing as there will be mash, I'm tempted to let it slide.

And ask to be invited to dinner.

NorwaySpruce · 20/11/2014 16:46

MASH !?

What on earth has happened to make you think like this??

A roast potato is a thing of beauty, I'd happily forsake any other part of the meal for an extra roast potato.

All crispy on the outside, almost, but not quite, burnt. Fluffy and wonderful on the inside..

I love roasted root vegetables as nuch as the next person, but you've got to have a roast spud in there to counter the sweetness Xmas Shock

Gruntfuttock · 20/11/2014 16:46

How many of us are now fancying some lovely roast potatoes RIGHT NOW?
