Buffet

Booh fay sounds wrong and pretentious. It should be Buh fay.

(even if the first version is correct. it sounds wrong/stupid or stoopid

Which pronunciations annoy you?

Scht for st, as in schtupid, Schtreet for street

A lot of Z celebs use that sound. and I've heard childrens tv presenter say schtrong instead of strong. And as you say, schtupid instead of stupid.

wotchshrong with them?

Nu-cue-lar instead of nu-clear!

Drives me nuts!

Leela5 · 20/11/2014 18:07

I know someone who pronounced 'breakfast' as 'brake-fast'. It did my head in.

MindReader · 20/11/2014 18:10

I have seen chester drawers on local Gumtree.

And local estate agents advertising houses with 'envious kitchens' and 'envious bathrooms'. FFS.

A common one is being on 'tenderhooks' - no, the phrase is 'tenterhooks' from the hooks used to stretch and hold cloth as it dried (and I have seen the last surviving set in Europe which are located in Northumberland should you wish to see them too)

My Kentish mother who believe her pronunciation superior to anyone else's once had an amusing conversation with a Weegie bus driver when she tried to tell him how to pronounce Glasgow 'properly'. Silly, patronising mare. She was lucky not to understand most of what her called her, I do believe....Grin

Bettercallsaul1 · 20/11/2014 18:11

That's a common pronunciation in Edinburgh, Leela.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/11/2014 18:12

Oh, my dad will only talk about robbers (because we've teased him so much about 'feethes' and 'burgLAHs').

Leela5 · 20/11/2014 18:14

I'm from Edinburgh and no one I know calls it that so I must be sheltered ! The person was from the isles

DorothyGherkins · 20/11/2014 18:16

Brocka lie for broccoli.

And in France, do they really say Silly Bong for Cillet Bang?????

SassyPasty · 20/11/2014 18:17

Both my exH AND exDP used to say dressing gowned Confused

I felt like strangling them with the fucking fluffy belt Angry

Another exDPism - carm instead of calm. Itchy teeth and piss-a-boiling all at once with that one Angry Angry

Leela5 · 20/11/2014 18:20

I'm going to have to ask my friends now about that...perhaps I've just never paid attention Shock

Sprink · 20/11/2014 18:27

Sickth for sixth!

It's an X, not a ck!

You pronounce the X when you say Six, pronounce it when you say Sixth!

I don't know why I'm so excited! Sorry!

Bogeyface · 20/11/2014 18:33

'Fruiter -er's' meaning the fruit and veg shop.

Technically correct although more usually known as green grocers now. Or Aldi if you are me :o

I hate it when anyone (kids usually) say "I need the toylut" but with that gutteral back of the throat thing instead of the T, what is that sound called?!

And my friend always says sanDwiCH, emphasis being on the D and the CH. Drives me mad for reasons I cant quite explain.....

Bogeyface · 20/11/2014 18:35

Sassy er....dont you pronounce it carm? Like Farm? Confused

How else is it pronounced?

SassyPasty · 20/11/2014 18:39

Bogeyface · 20/11/2014 18:42

SassyPasty · 20/11/2014 18:46

Grin quick test - have a sing through of the first verse of Silent Night. Carm? Nope, just nope.

Have to agree to differ on that one (and ask you kindly not to become any sort of significant other of mine) Grin

primarynoodle · 20/11/2014 18:46

Schtudents like Janet street porter. Sadly member of SMT at school ????

christmaspies · 20/11/2014 18:55

My very well educated says seketary instead of secretary. It does my head in.

christmaspies · 20/11/2014 18:56

Sorry-I meant to say my very well educated DH

AdamLambsbreath · 20/11/2014 18:57

'Rart' just made me laugh out loud Grin

Aaaargh, 'haitch' . . . don't get me started. Our local radio station has a show with 'DJ Haitch' (DJ H) which I have to turn off. Also the woman who presented the Horizon 'Secret Life of Cats' programme recently kept saying 'Meanwhile, back at Cat Haitch Q', causing me to shout at the screen.

Someone on the radio just said asterix instead of asterisk - sigh

Bogeyface · 20/11/2014 18:58
Carm Carm Carm

:o:o

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 20/11/2014 18:59

Bogey is it called a glottal stop?

DJ's racist gran used to refer to the people at the corner shop as 'Parkies'. I suppose if you are going to use racially offensive terms you may as well mispronounce them so everyone can laugh at your ignorance twice.

happybunny2014 · 20/11/2014 18:59

Bokkul
Ickul
Hospiccul

And a personal pet peeve was an old friend of mine who used to pronounce Chorizo as Chinzaro.
