AIBU to think Royal Mail should not be delivering large quantities of junk mail to my door everyday

Why does Royal mail think it's ok to deliver a load of junk to my door everyday? I have a notice up saying 'no junk mail' but Royal Mail ignore it. I have politely spoken to the postie but he says he has to post it and continues to do so.

I understand LOCAL businesses targeting residents in this way but multi national companies using a scattergun approach, really? It's unenvironmentally friendly and over half my paper recycle paper bin is junk mail.

AIBU to be really fed up of picking up junk mail and having to dispose of it? It's not a little bit either, today I received 8 unsolicited letters and leaflets.

yes, it's a nuisance but you can opt out.

Why can't Royal Mail make a profit?

They get paid to do it. They need all the money they can get or they will go out of business. Just 'file' it in the recycling. You will have something to complain about when we all have to go to a central place to collect our post as no one wants to deliver to every door, every day, for the same price regardless of distance. And think about the impact that will have on the environment, as everyone gets in their cars to collect their mail.

People don't use the post half as much as they used to - Amazon, email etc etc...

Royal Mail get paid to deliver these documents, and they wouldn't survive without them. It's their bread and butter now that we don't write letters anymore, and everyman and his dog offer a parcel delivery service.

I think that they legally have to deliver your letters if they are adressed to you.

You need to take this up with the companies that produce the garbage mail in the first place.

you can opt out of receiving the unaddressed mail. Stuff addressed to 'the owner' or 'the occupier' .

To stop nuisance mail addressed to you by name then you have to contact the company direct.

There really isn't a lot you can do about leaflets (pizza menus etc) delivered by hand.

Yes I can't understand why people want to change for plastic bags but don't complain about the wastefulness of the unsolicited mail we all get every day.

I don't care about it - having worked in the industry, I know that they desperately need these contracts to survive. Competition, creaming off the more profitable business (bills, bank statements etc), has nearly done for them.

You can opt out here. Be aware that you have to do it by post, it expires after two years and they don't send you a reminder.

I wonder what will happen when they inevitably bring in charging for household refuse and recycling collections, by weight or per bag, like many other greener countries do?

Maybe people will see it as more of a nuisance when they have to pay to discard the junk.

I would happily go to a bi weekly delivery if it meant no more junk.

The trouble is that once in a blue moon something is sent that does matter. e.g. most of the stuff about the digital switchover came by way of unaddressed mail. Not the biggest deal if we'd missed it but it would have been a nuisance.

Just this morning I had two identical 'letters' from a charity and three identical 'letters' from TalkTalk!
I don't want one from each of them let alone two or three!
A lot of our neighbours have a no junk mail sign on their door and also seem friendly with the postie so wondering if I'm getting their share as well.

I wonder how successful it is? I suppose the companies must think it's worthwhile but the vast majority of it goes in the recycling without being opened here. Doesn't matter how good the deal they're offering is because I'm not going to read it.

yes bendymum i imagine the postman takes time to look though their mail and sort out the unsolicitored stuff then posts it through your door

I don't know SouthEast, none of it's addressed, I imagine it would save postie some time to put several copies of the unaddressed letter through one box, especially if he had some "real" post to deliver there. That way he doesn't have to walk up every path if there's no other mail to deliver at that house.

Not saying it actually happens.....

I am not very mobile unfortunately, so it is a real pain for me to pick up and then dispose of.

The unsolicited post is on a pile in a separate place with our postie, the addressed stuff gets put through then he picks up the pile of unsolicited stuff after.
