to think Nick Conrad (BBC Norfolk) should be gagged with his own bloody knickers

The man is pathetic, but his views are still very harmful.
Apparently a man's sexual urges are some sort of juggernaut without brakes. Turn it on, and there is nothing to be done but let it roll on to the finish. Sad and sickening.

Dojo & Neverbuy, I got the same. . . as you so rightly say he has not apologised for his comments, he has apologised to anyone who is offended by them. Arse.

I got the same. They didn't answer my specific question about what training he might get to make him a better person to work with. Nor did they answer my question about how safe his female co-workers felt or if it might be an idea for him to do a programme on Rape apology and rape myths.

GetMe · 21/11/2014 17:18

This is unbelievable and I see so far a pathetic response from the BBC.

As I said on another thread I have ended up naked with men when I was younger and decided sex was a bad idea and guess what I didn't get raped. That's because fortunately I never met any rapists (and nothing whatsoever to do with what I did or didn't do).

What he says is completely offensive to decent non-rapist men and not helping getting the message of consent out there. Have signed the petition.

Sallyingforth · 21/11/2014 17:29

As stated earlier, you will get no satisfaction from the BBC.

You need to complain to Ofcom

stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/tell-us/specific-programme-epg

TheAlias · 21/11/2014 17:32

I complained predominantly about the shocking lack of research before hosting a three hour debate and the way the public who contributed were misled, because the rest had already been said.

I haven't had a reply yet, I wonder if they might actually be going to address my point?!

Wonkyparsnip · 21/11/2014 17:40

I used to produce a bbc phone in and I'm totally confused as to why he gave an opinion anyway? I used to produce a controversial presenter and he stimulated debate but never gave an opinion.

The Bbc complaints are all logged and are taken seriously. (Way more than ofcom) Also the BBC response might look wishy washy but the line about his comments being unacceptable sends a bit of a shiver down my spine. He won't be there long.

TheAlias · 21/11/2014 17:49

Wonky, why is it that, ATM, he seems to have been treated so much more leniently than the West Country DJ would played the racist song, without realising and who apologised properly straight away?

Where I used to work, drink driving was a sackable offence (that's not why I left!) but the only people who were sacked for it were those they were looking for an excuse to get rid of anyway IYSWIM

squoosh · 21/11/2014 17:49

Let's hope so!

Wonkyparsnip · 21/11/2014 18:28

Tbh no idea. Sometimes presenters get away with a lot as they are very popular. Is this presenter one of their most popular/get big listening figures? On the other hand could something in his personal life have lead to him making this stupid vile comment?

One thing I would say is often things aren't how they seem and the bbc can't be 100% transparent. It's really hard when listeners demand to know about something and there's more going on behind the scenes.

It was still a dickish thing to say and I'm surprised his producer didn't have a conversation with him beforehand and advise him his comments are vile.

DoJo · 21/11/2014 18:58

I have already complained to Ofcom and signed the petition, but I want to follow up with the BBC because I resent being patted on the head and told that it's all alright because he's sorry I chose to be offended. Giving these views the oxygen of publicity damages society by perpetuating the belief that they are mainstream. People who think like this should be ashamed, not be able to point to people from a license payer funded organisation who not only agree with them, but apparently have the backing of the whole corporation.

Lambzig · 21/11/2014 19:15

Signed. I despair for my DD if the BBC doesn't find it an immediately sackable offence.

TheAlias · 21/11/2014 21:04

That's an interesting point Wonky. His mother died when he was four. Does that make a difference, no female influence etc?

DoJo · 27/11/2014 16:11

I have had a further response to my follow up complaint, which again focusses on the offence caused rather than the damaging nature of these views being espoused in a public arena. Local radio may not represent the majority, but I believe that allowing someone to promote the idea that women are responsible for being sexually assaulted is damaging and dangerous for the wider society, and this is the crux of my complaint. Allowing him to 'apologise for any offence' rather than sacking him for holding such despicable views is the real problem here - his continued career in the spotlight, however small, and broadcasting his views when he clearly feels more affinity with rapists than victims seems completely inappropriate to me.

reddaisy · 01/12/2014 12:01

Update! The comments are going to be investigated by Ofcom, partly due to some of our complaints no doubt.

www.theguardian.com/media/2014/dec/01/ched-evans-rape-debate-ofcom-bbc-nick-conrad-norfolk

Wolfbasher · 01/12/2014 12:04

Thanks for the update Daisy, that is good news. I agree DoJo - this is less about the "offence caused to some listeners" and more about "dangerous promotion of rape culture outlook"

OP posts:
reddaisy · 01/12/2014 12:06

Absolutely. That is such a patronising non apology that it is worse than not making one at all.

DuelingFanjo · 02/12/2014 13:33

Anyone seen this

A BBC radio presenter who was forced to apologise after he said women should “keep their knickers on” to avoid being raped, has sent messages threatening legal action to a woman accusing her of inciting rape and paedophila against the DJ and his family, The Independent can reveal.

As a result of his comments, Kirsty Strickland, from Glasgow, launched a petition calling on the BBC to fire him.

In the days after she launched the campaign, Mr Conrad found Ms Strickland on Facebook and sent her a private message

A week later, the presenter messaged her again and threatened to contact the police. Mr Conrad accused her campaign of inciting violence against him and his family, “including rape and pedophilia [sic]”.

He went on to claim that he and the BBC had been monitoring Strickland’s activities online.

I imagine that if he wasn't a gonner before - he will be now.

DuelingFanjo · 02/12/2014 14:05

BTW - I actually feel some sympathy towards him as he clearly hasn't got anyone looking after him, and helping him to deal with all the shit surrounding this.

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 02/12/2014 14:17

I dont know much about these petitions but it says 15 more signatures are needed...

Nick Conrad to face no action over his comments. Bloody unbelievable.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-32781882

MinimumPayment · 18/05/2015 15:23

How is it possible there were only 46 complaints?

reddaisy · 18/05/2015 16:04

No idea but whether there were 4 or 46 complaints the outcome should still have been different - how can the rate of sexual assaults against women be tackled if someone is allowed to get away with saying something so grossly wrong and appalling on BBC Radio? It doesn't say anything about whether he was disciplined by the BBC either.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 07/11/2019 15:08

Remember this thread from 2014?

Now in 2019 Nick Conrad: Ex-BBC host in 'keep knickers on' row is Tory candidate. Not made up I swear. Look it's reported by the BBC:
