Having read many threads on this site and having read a couple in particular today, it seems that "most" of the posters on here have benefited from these types of schools. However, time and time again you read these people slating Grammar , Private and single sex schools. This is so hypocritical that the posters who have had the benefit of the best of the education system, seem so anti any form of selection for today's children.

I had the misfortune of being educated in a Secondary Modern in Kent in the 1980s . There are not many Secondary Modern educated posters on this site, which goes to show how fortunate the majority of posters on here were with their educations. These people are like "Champagne Socialists" having benefited from superior educations, but seek to deny the opportunities for future generations. "DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO" springs to mind with these posters who espouse the merits of Comprehensive education, having not being educated through the Comprehensive system themselves.

Just for statistics, I was educated at a mixed comprehensive followed by an open entry sixth form.

At A Level its entirely normal for the teachers to have relevant degrees - as far as I'm aware all the teachers at DDs massive college do.
At GCSE its much less of an issue compared with pedagogy and teaching skills TBH.

It's one of the things that always makes me grin about some private school parents- "oh, one of the really good things about St Custard's is that all the teachers have relevant degrees- it's so important once they reach the age of 5"

I would certainly expect A level teachers to have relevant degrees, though.

Talkinpeace. I was considering moving to the fully selective Trafford Area (postponed at the moment) Sorry. The neighbouring area's of Cheshire East/Warrington Manchester and Salford are Comprehensive areas.

Cheshire East's Comprehensives don't do very well considering the area, not one of the areas Comprehensives has more than 10%FSM, yet not one achieves more than 70% Maths/English @ the Bench mark Grades. This is a legacy caused by a high percentage of able /well off children being educated either in private or by the selective schools in Trafford. The other "Quirk" is that two of Trafford's Modern schools Wellington/ Blessed achieve higher GCSE grades than any of Cheshire East's fully Comprehensive schools.

stress less about the data on individual schools and just get up there

If nothing else living at the edge of a big conurbation with LOTS of schools around you will make you realise that the limited, dire choice of East Kent is not representative
and the rest of us might just have a point about enjoying not enduring the 11+ Wink

Good point Talking. Sadly due to my Fragile state at the moment and DD2 YR11, DSRr9 attitudes (backed by their Gran) I will not be moving from "EAST KENT"for at least 4 years.......

I guessed
But when you do, be ready to be pleasantly surprised Smile

Talkinpeace. I think we have been very unfair on the "Marsh academy" they have got a "Sauna and Steam Room" Sun Beds, Exercise Classes , A Relaxation Suite , Conference Facilities and a "Roller Disco Every Friday Night. According to the DFE it is also a Comprehensive.... Everything a pupil or parent could wish for under one roof.

I am thinking phase two of the development will be a Outlet Shopping Village with Armani, Boss, Fendi , among the many household high street names, there will be a selection of Restaurants featuring Mcdonald's, Burger king, KFC and for the demanding guests Nando's and the star attraction " Frankie And Benny's " .

It would be quite hilarious , if the school did not fail 60% of its pupils. 40% A*-C last year and the school is Promoting Sun Beds, (which I thought were Illegal for Under 18s to use). The school is a "spoof"

Nah, they are preparing the kids for jobs at the Ashford Designer outlet.
is amused to be having a private conversation on a public forum, but hey, the public school parents do it all the time

What you have to remember about all of the schools East of Ashford other than Simon Langton and Dover Girls is that they are below the standards we expect of Comps in other parts of the country.
Dover Boy's grammar barely out performs DS's Comp ....

My house price data up thread was the real giveaway.
East of Ashford, much of Kent is grindingly poor in a way that would shock most MN Education thread posters.

But the overall Kent results include the High Weald so hide it.

Please trust us : non selective schools can be great.

But you live in an area where they will not happen in a hurry and selective schools barely work for anybody.

"Just Got Back from The Alan Turing film" Brilliant Man!.

I avoided Dover Boys For my son (Oops I have given away his school) The other one is better. The two girls grammars are about equal , not just in terms of results but curricular stuff etc. Dover Girls has a few Boys in the Sixth form.

Interestingly Brockhill Park (Hythe) (performing Arts College) is a "Comprehensive" with 7% High attainers. However, they seem to do "well " at Sixth Form level with a C- Average grade and 204 Points. It makes the grammar's look pretty poor really Dover Girls 215 C+ / The Boys "202" C- score is Pathetic , how can Brockhill have a higher average A level score than Dover Boys !.
Folkestone 218 C+ Harvey 223 C+.

These average grade figures show that people who think grammar schools average A grades for sixth form are massively mistaken!...
