Quick, help:

How long should I boil the sprouts for?

YABVU to eat sprouts in the first place.

MehsMum · 16/11/2014 21:12

Ah, I see the anti-sprout tendency is now making its presence felt.
Good on yer, all of you. It's nice not to be a lone voice crying in the wilderness.

Jolleigh · 16/11/2014 21:14

Cut X into bottom of all sprouts.

Boil for 8 minutes.

Drain.

Transfer to bin.

Bunbaker · 16/11/2014 21:18

"Mmmm sprouts, 8-10 mins in boiling really salty water."

That's far too long Naice. They would be soggy. It's no wonder your house smells when you cook them. I do mine for 5 mins max. Tossed with some bacon lardons and chestnuts, they are delicious.

Bunbaker · 16/11/2014 21:19

Oh, and they don't need a cross cutting into them either.

Most people who hate sprouts have only ever eaten overcooked sprouts, which are disgusting. Lightly cooked and with the right seasonings they are a revelation.

Gruntfuttock · 16/11/2014 21:23

I'd rather eat sprouts than chocolate, and I love chocolate, so all the anti-sprout posts are very irritating. Angry

dementedma · 16/11/2014 21:25

You shred them finely. Then on Christmas Day you stir fry them with mustard, honey and cream. Delicious.

Sidge · 16/11/2014 21:25

Sprouts are Satan's Droppings.

Revolting things. I love cabbage but sprouts are just cabbage made evil.

Blurrgggghhhhh.

OwlWearingSunglasses · 16/11/2014 22:24

Love sprouts. At Christmas we always cook more sprouts than we will eat so we have leftovers for bubble and squeak the next day. Yum.

Hatespiders · 16/11/2014 22:25

Sprouts are absolutely gorgeous. Scrumptious. I cut them in half so they cook even faster. They should still be a bright green colour. If they're going yellowy they've been boiled for too long. (They should still be slightly crunchy) Just 4 mins in briskly boiling water then strained and knob of butter.
I've got loads in the fridge right now and this thread is making me want some as a snack!

Hatespiders · 16/11/2014 22:28

By the way, just Google the food value of sprouts. They do everything bar whistle Dixie!

steff13 · 16/11/2014 22:29

Don't boil them. Toss them in a bit of olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and roast for about 30 minutes.

Shockers · 16/11/2014 22:42

We had them tonight. I stick em in everything when they're in season (shredded in stir-fries are my new speciality), but tonight they were just steamed for about 8 minutes (they were whoppers though).

I like them in B&S the next day (with cauli cheese, carrots, mash and any other veg), topped with poached eggs and lots of black pepper.

The buggers ate the lot tonight though... even though I cooked loads extra Hmm.

Laloue23 · 16/11/2014 22:51

Raw...absolutely the best. With bacon and chestnuts, really quite lovely. Sprout cheese in 1978? Best left there ( but we were broke)

motleymop · 16/11/2014 22:54

Please, please, let's not get into another cross-cutting vs. no cross-cutting debate - I can't cope with another battle about it!

2kidsintow · 16/11/2014 22:58

However long it takes until you can stab them with a really sharp knife and it will go in.

DH loves his boiled to death though, and mashed. Urgh.

FishWithABicycle · 16/11/2014 23:06

Roasted or stirfried with almonds much better than boiling. But if you must boil, just prod them with a sharp knife occasionally until you can cut them without too much effort - and make sure you stop them then before they go mushy.

RiceBurner · 16/11/2014 23:22

I rinse mine, then microwave them for 10 mins, (as I like them very soft), and then I cover them with an oil dressing. (Olive oil, sesame oil and soya sauce usually.)

Like the other suggestions (stir-fry etc) but my method is very simple/easier.

Sprouts are so YUMMY! (I can eat a whole bag on my own with ease.)

Catsize · 16/11/2014 23:26

Want to eat sprouts now. Even though it us 23:25 and the sprouts are sleeping in the fridge.

Toadinthehole · 16/11/2014 23:26

Cut x into sprouts.

Boil fiercely for 3 minutes in salted water.

Drain.

Add pepper.

Serve with roast beef and Yorkshire.

BreconBeBuggered · 16/11/2014 23:45

I love sprouts, even overcooked ones.

I wouldn't dare wade into a cross/don't cross argument, but is it too controversial to ask how many sprouts are in an average MNer's portion?

WalkingInMemphis · 17/11/2014 00:32

Par boil them and then fry them with garlic.

Garlic sprouts are amazing.

Toadinthehole · 17/11/2014 05:32

Yum. Will definitely try that.

WowWowSauce · 17/11/2014 06:22

Cut them in half and put them in a little baking dish. Cover in Stilton and tinfoil and bake on a meduim ish temp for 45 minutes. Delicious.

hadn't thought of trying them with bacon...

CariadsDarling · 17/11/2014 06:26

I love sprouts and the other day I added them to a stir fry/noodle thing I made up as I went along. It was delicious.
