To ask about your experience of misaligned jaws

Just posted this in children's health but thought I'd get more traffic here. Sorry.
My 3yo DS has a misaligned jaw (his bottom teeth are in front of his top teeth when his mouth is closed). Just been advised by our dentist that it's likely that he'll need 'minor' surgery when he's a teenager. From googling the procedure it doesn't look at all minor. It also seems that it gets worse during puberty and surgery can't happen until he's about 16. I hate the idea of him being bullied throughout his high school years and dread the effect this may have on his self-esteem. Has anyone got any first-hand experience of this?

My brother had this, perhaps more extreme as his upper jaw was too narrow as well?

In his teens he had braces, then this thing that forced his jaw to widen, then a plate to stop his jaw from reverting, then more braces, then the surgery which left him pretty swollen and was painful but it was a day job. Then one last set of braces to even things out.

He looks like a completely different person now as the surgery fixed his upper jaw, in fact he looks more like me!! (Except he has Hollywood teeth)

This was awhile ago though, but I hope it helps somewhat.

I know this is an old thread but there's lot of positive experiences here so I'd like to say thank you for sharing! My DS (16) has a jaw surgery planned and the procedure isn't pleasant but the results sound very promising, so we decided to go ahead. First step is pulling out 2 teeth, then braces for 3-4 years and surgery in the end. We had a call with the doctor today and they have been very helpful in answering all the questions.
