To think a full day trip to a mosque for 6 year old school trip is a bit much?

I'm all for comparative religious education, learning what other religions believe and what they're about, but my daughter is in year 2 and, with her (non denominational) school, has probably been in the Anglican church for maybe 2 hours (1 hour each year for a carol service), never been to a Synagogue or any other place of worship, but is spending a whole day in a mosque. School trip that we have to pay for, and the girls are 'welcome' to wear headscarves, but not compulsory. This is not in any way an issue with the religion, but not sure why it's such a big investment in one religion. There are 3 muslim pupils in the 60 in her year.

They were all required to cover their head and bring a vegetarian lunch which pissed me off tbh.

God forbid your sprog eats vegetables for ONE day...Hmm

My kids have visited a mosque, a church and a gurdwara. They liked the last line best as they all covered their heads which they found exciting and there was free food. I went on it too and luckily most of the Y2 class had zoned out by the time the guide started explaing karma to them. He said that the babies had died in the tsunami because they had been bad in a previous life. My son still says he feels sad for the dead babies.

I forgot they've visited a Hindu temple too. They were given a sugar lump each when they left, poor teachers.

YANBU. I would be unhappy with this unless there were other visits to balance things.

In year 2 dd did a half day trip to a mosque. A week later they did a half day visit to a gudwara. They wrote about the differences and similarities.

The girls wore headscarves and the boys covered their hair in both places.

In year 3 they went to a Roman Catholic and a C of E church and again did comparisons.

DD's favourite was the Gudwara because they all got fed Grin

Hi OP. Maybe posting in AIBU is probably not best place for this.

Don't know where you live but we have had two experiences. 1) lived in v multicultural area with children from all faiths - DCs never visited any place of worship ever and wasn't even allowed to discuss the potentially religious aspects of Xmas. 2) live in much more homogenous white bristish Christian area - DCs have visited church but as comparative religion were told they'd be learning about Hinduism because "that's what the school has the resources/materials for".

Maybe your school has got a good thing going with the local mosque - hence the visit. They, maybe like our school don't know any Jewish/ Bahai/ Buddhists people, so have plumped for the easiest one.

Didn't get an awful lot out of her about what they did, apparently they had a talk about Islam and saw a video of men praying 'with their bottoms in the air' Grin. Turns out you're right Quickchange, several of her friends didn't go. I was quite surprised. She did ask me as she went to bed what Islam was so I suppose it's made her think.
Will try and find another part of Mumsnet to explore (and probably namechange). Not really sure where to go. Find it a little confusing. Only came here because this is usually where the interesting stuff that comes on the weekly email are.
