to think dp should not have offered to help

Just mentioned to dp that we need to go to the supermarket at some point today. He says OK, but we have to pop into town to help x jump start her car. But we don't have jump leads? "We'll have to call in and buy some". I ask him if he knows how to jump start a car, " No, that's why you're coming ". But I don't know how to??? " yes you do ", no really dp I don't have a clue how to. So I ask dp why x has asked him? Because he's the only one she knows with a car????

Wibu to get him to call her back and tell her to call RAC?

Who is x to him?

HermioneWeasley · 09/11/2014 10:43

Sounds like a bonkers idea - you will be out of pocket on the jump leads and neither of you actually know how to do it. What was he thinking?

Mrshoff · 09/11/2014 10:43

Yanbu. Ask him if he is aware, if he gets the leads the wrong way round he can spike her ecu which will cost £100's of £'s to fix

firesidechat · 09/11/2014 10:44

You can look up how to jump start a car on the internet.

As long as X is going to pay for the jump leads then I don't see a problem. It doesn't take long to get the engine started.

EllaFitzgerald · 09/11/2014 10:45

Unless it's someone who has really gone out of her way to help your DP in the past, I'd have been putting my foot down at buying jump leads just so he could help (although they are handy to have).

Does she know how to do it?

ilovesooty · 09/11/2014 10:45

Without knowing who X is I couldn't pass an opinion.

Letthemtalk · 09/11/2014 10:47

Someone he works with, I've never heard of her before. Dp can't say no to anyone, one of the reasons I love him. But it drives me mad.

He's finding out if she has jump leads. Other suggestion I gave was to go down and phone RAC (we have cover with them)

I can understand your frustration. But the good thing is you've clearly married a very kind man. I've got a lot of time for people who go out of their way to help others. Sorry, completely unhelpful!

FunkyBoldRibena · 09/11/2014 10:52

Whoa - she needs to sort her own jump leads/RAC cover out! What is this going to teach her in the long run? That she needs someone else's man someone else to help her out of each and every hole?

JumpingJetFlash · 09/11/2014 10:52

It's lovely that he is so kind and helpful but you can seriously damage modern engines if you don't get it right.

Letthemtalk · 09/11/2014 10:54

And did I mention we live 10 miles away and she lives within 500m of a garage?? She's just texted him that she doesn't have jump leads.

OP posts:
Incapinka · 09/11/2014 10:56

This is really simple. He now responds saying 'sorry. We don't have any either. Why don't you ask the garage to help?' Done and dusted.

Winterbells · 09/11/2014 10:57

I think everyone who owns a car should have their own set of jump leads and know how to use them, it's just sensible. So if you end up buying them, then learn how to use them and keep them for yourself it's not a bad thing to do.

That said, I think it was nice of your DP to want to help although maybe he should have declined if it meant going massively out of his to do so. Can she not ask a neighbour?

thaiglish · 09/11/2014 10:58

How would you seriously damage a modern engine by attaching jump leads from one battery to another?

Winterbells · 09/11/2014 10:59

OK, if she lives that close to a garage then she needs to use her brain and ask them rather than summoning your DP.

Letthemtalk · 09/11/2014 10:59

He's said maybe we can give her a push start, I've pointed out she lives on the flat and that if that was the solution there will be other people who can help.

OP posts:
lemisscared · 09/11/2014 10:59

So he text back - really sorry neither do we. Unless she is stranded on the motorway she is going to have to ditch the damsel in distress act put on her big girl pants and sort it out herself. Why is she asking himanyway?

lemisscared · 09/11/2014 11:00

So hang on? She is at home? Seriously. Tell her to jog on

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 09/11/2014 11:04

My car is 4 year's old and my CD's friend's mum had to jump start it for me a few months ago - what kind of damage does it do MrsHoff ?

If she is at home, not stuck at the side of a road, and is 500 metres from a garage them asking a colleague to drive 10 miles and buy jump leads is odd... Although its Sunday so the garage will be closed presumably?

Thebodynowchillingsothere · 09/11/2014 11:05

Sounds bloody annoying.

Test her back and tell her you havnt got leads either and havnt a clue so she needs to call the AA.

Take your dhs super hero cloak off him and bin it.

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 09/11/2014 11:07

*DD, years... Autocorrect...

AlpacaYourThings · 09/11/2014 11:08

YY tell him to text her back and say, "Oh that's a shame, neither do we. Might be better off going to the garage?"

GoodboyBindleFeatherstone · 09/11/2014 11:08

She's asking a colleague to drive 10 miles AND buy jump leads? Is she playing the damsel in distress to find out how much your DP cares about her?

PopcornFrenzy · 09/11/2014 11:09

If you do manage to get some jump leads, make sure you connect the positive first then the negative second or you'll have some sparks flying...

So positive positive then negative negative.

HedgehogsDontBite · 09/11/2014 11:11

She needs to get herself down to Argos to buy an RAC battery booster. You just connect it to your battery, press a button and off you go. I'd never heard of such an item until I got a flat battery in the Argos carpark. The lovely manager there told me about them, sold me one and then came out and helped me to do it. Then you charge it up at home and stick it in the boot ready for next time.
