To think Apple are out of order

MrsRaegan · 07/11/2014 19:52

Just that really. I have 2 iPads one is an IPad 1 and one is and iPad 3 gave the older one to my mum to use and after the latest update it's pretty much been rendered useless.

Most apps don't work. Safari cuts off, can't watch videos on FB etc. all after this update. I realise it's an older model, but I also think that I spent a not insubstantial amount of money on it only a few years ago and think its annoying that I'm being forced into buying a new one if I want to keep using an iPad. Think I'll be replacing with an android device.

I'm really disappointed in Apple recently. If I have understood correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong.) Steve Jobs would only release products that were better than anything currently available on the market at that time.
It seems with his loss that Apple has become solely about financial gain and will release anything regardless of what is currently on the market, in the hope it will sell because of the company name rather than its quality.

ProbablyMe · 08/11/2014 04:58

PowerPants - Minecraft is available on Android too.

Today I made trip to Genius bar in apple store for nothing!
They booked me an appointment over the phone and it wasn't in their calendar!
Another trip next week!
I wouldn't rate their support highly...

Dh works in it and would never let me get an apple product. He recently got me a Samsung 12.1 inch for 300. It's far higher spec than apple products for half the price. My old Samsung is 4 year old and hadn't really got slow, I just wantwd a bigger screen and to be able to run new apps smoothy.

poolomoomon · 08/11/2014 08:05

When I was a teenager I begged my dad to get me an Apple computer. One of those big things with the neon coloured see through backs, that's the only reason I wanted one Grin. He refused on the grounds that apple and Mac software in general are useless overpriced rubbish and a right nightmare.

The first apple product I owned was an iPod nano when they first came out. I got through three in one year because they kept bloody smashing! All it took was for me to put my bag down gently with the iPod in and boom! It was gone.

Stuck with samsung phones forever until my contract run out in January, thought I'd try an iphone for the first time. Worst decision I EVER made. Loathe the thing, counting down the days till my contract ends again (over a year left yet Sad). Didn't know they don't come with a memory card slot like androids so I'm stuck with fuck all memory, I take a lot of pictures so this renders it useless until I can clear it (laptop broke so Christ knows when this will be...) there's no Bluetooth option to send things to or receive things from android phones. Some apps I loved on android don't exist on apple.

I could go on but I'll stop. The camera quality is the only thing that saves the bloody thing. I shan't be returning to Apple ever again, my Dad was correct. I should add I can't update my IOS because I have no memory Angry. Maybe it's a good thing though from what's been said on here...

Well, I love Apple and wouldn't consider anything else. Had a HTC briefly and you couldn't pay me enough to have another one. DP had a nexus tablet for a couple of months and it was rubbish.

Between us we have two iPads (one air and one mini), two iPhones (5c and 5s) and three iPods. Never had a problem.

My auntie has used the Genius Bar (broken iPod) and found them really helpful.

It makes me laugh about the 'broken screens'. Never happened to us in 8 years!

RJnomore · 08/11/2014 08:29

Charlie I can't understand the broken screens either. Apart from one of dd1s iPod nanos (which got broken in a fight between her and dd2 so not exactly accidental) we have never broken a screen.

My friend on the other hand got an iPhone 3 at Thr same time as I did, broke the screen within a month. I took it to the genius bar where they replaced it free even though it wasn't covered by warranty (now THAT'S service you won't get from Samsung/htc etc) and within a month she had smashed the new one.

However we are apple through and through - the laptops are MacBooks, we all have iPads, iPods, iPhones - and I think if you have everything from them the compatibility is great. I'm not technical enough to fully understand how it works but they all talk to each other, it's amazing.

Poolo, are you using your icloud storage, the free storage isn't huge but it should help with your issues. I do think they're a bit naughty not producing an iphone5c with more than 8g memory.

saintlyjimjams · 08/11/2014 08:41

Get shoebox to store your photos - bloody brilliant. I had the same problem of my photos taking up all my memory & shoebox has completely solved the problem.

ImTheOneThatKnocks · 08/11/2014 09:12

In all our families years of iPhone ownership we have never had a screen break. My eldest has had his iPhone (my old cast off) for about three years without a problem. I think they are robust phones.

SparkyLark · 08/11/2014 09:39

Its nice not to feel alone with Apple rage Grin!

I bought an Ipad, finally, and was very disappointed. It felt very "toyish" to me, I was very limited in many ways, the tiny memory was shocking and I could not expand it! On top of that it broke after 6 months. I was never so pleased as to get back to Android.

I do have an ITunes Ipod nano though. I transferred a lot of my CDs on to it, and bought a few tracks - maybe 30 from ITunes. The glass smashed within 6 months, but it still works.

I don't like feeling tied to the Apple company through all this though.

If anyone has time for tecchie question "Can I copy my ITunes catalogue onto something else?" I don't like feeling tied to a company, Apple, in this way. In the old days, if you bought an LP or a CD, then that was it. Somehow I've managed to envigle my way into being stuck with a third party company that somehow has control over my music [schock].

SparkyLark · 08/11/2014 09:40

If I sound like a ham-fisted cluck, believe me, I am a gentle person, who normally never breaks anything :-) !!

sauvignonblacks · 08/11/2014 09:55

Recently updated ipad2 and iphone 5 to ios8.1 works fine. DH constantly whinges about his ipad 1 which is obsolete nowadays, I am loathed to replace it with another ipad, like the look of the hudl2 tbh

Bunbaker · 08/11/2014 10:03

"have you ever looked into Samsung? It allegedly steals all its tech ideas/IP from other companies (mostly from Apple)"

Samsung make parts for Apple.

HopLittleBunny · 08/11/2014 10:13

One of the DC had been messing about with the date settings on my ipad2 to trick a game into advancing them further. The date will not let you go any further than NYE 2038. It's quite a long way away, but that's definitely planned obsolescence.

Missm00 · 08/11/2014 10:23

I was very reluctant to update my iPhone 5c as that caused problems. But I remember seeing in the news last year I think, that when Apple releases a new model of phone, they deliberately slow Down the others, meaning that people have to go and get the new one.

Echocave · 08/11/2014 10:24

Yes Bunbaker, Samsung do make Apple parts - they are also embroiled in a large number of patent cases with them eg slide unlocking and Apple would like to get out of many of its' commercial arrangements with Samsung. I was making the point that ethically Samsung are no better than Apple.

Artistic · 08/11/2014 10:31

I never update my iPads or iPhone until they literally stop working on the old OS. Just too lazy to go through the hassle! Plus I know things will never be the same again...for worse.

Bunbaker · 08/11/2014 10:33

Yes, I know about the patent battles. I get regular updates from OH who works in S Korea.

Smilesandpiles · 08/11/2014 10:41

Sparky

You need to go into yout Itunes library, copy EVERYTHING onto blank CD's (or if you know how, a DVD Rom).

I did manage once to transfer my library from itunes to my laptop but I can't rememeber how it's done. It's worth playing around to get this done, even if it takes days.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS back up everything on Itunes onto a hard disk, that way, once you've bought it, it's yours to keep and they can't force you to update which results in you loosing eveything.

ANYONE with a smartphone should be backing everything up onto a computer anyway just in case. The number of people I come across that never do this astounds me.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 08/11/2014 11:02

Samsung aren't doing well. They've issued 4 or 5 profit warnings in the last 6 quarters.

But I share the pain on iPad 1. You can't download ios8 but all the aps have been optimised for it so things just switch off mid way through. Took me about 15 attempts to get peppapig video the other day. Which is painful enough but with an impatient toddler is a nightmare.
