Two fakes together eh?

ghostyslovesheep · 06/11/2014 12:12

what does he say that makes sense ...that isn't being said by many others with smaller egos and thesauruses

The ONE thing I'll give him is he is engaging 'the kids' - rather like Rick in the young ones...

I don't need RB to edumacate me - I have 30 years of grass roots campaigning behind me

whoever talks about 'silencing' him we can hope that is EXACTLY what he does with his use of language that excludes people and makes them feel dumb and by talking over other people and refusing to listen or take on board other peoples views.

The Militant Tendency in the 80's where very similar - lots of long words and complex Marxist philosophy which people didn't feel they had the knowledge to question or if they did they where soundly laughed at - it silences debate and shuts up the ordinary folk

I don't understand half of what he says and I think that's his intention - he hide that fact that he has nothing new to say behind flowery language and sneering

I've met so many RB in my life he just isn't original at all

badtime · 06/11/2014 12:21

I don't understand a lot of what he says because he uses long words incorrectly. He sounds like a first-year politics or sociology student who has had a whole world of knowledge opened up to him, and hasn't quite yet grasped that he hardly knows any of it and the reason other people might disagree with him is because many things are more complex than they may at first appear.

He would do well to read the influential psychology paper 'Unskilled and Unaware of It.

Binkybix · 06/11/2014 12:24

What Ghost just said. I'm dumbfounded when my friends like him. I was also struck by the irony when the same people who were sharing his nonsense on facebook were then lamenting the rise of UKIP.

squoosh · 06/11/2014 12:24

I agree completely, he tries to bamboozle people with his I've Got a Brand New Thesaurus speak and it's so unnecessary and it just smacks of insecurity on his part.

ClockWatchingLady · 06/11/2014 12:48

Yes, he's a flawed individual (like the rest of us) and his manner can be offputting. But he's pointing out a lot of things about the current political and economic systems which we really need to hear - and to think about openly. He's in a good position to point out some of these things because he gets heard (although ridiculing him is indeed one very effective and well-tested way of avoiding looking into what he's trying to say).

Having said that, the Parklife video's funny Grin

LilAnnieAmphetamine · 06/11/2014 13:58

It is rather ironic that he accuses the establishment of hiding behind intellectualism and big graphs whilst aping this himself except he hasn't taken the time to actually learn what the terms he uses, mean.

AliceLidl · 06/11/2014 14:10

The video was genius Grin, although I'm a bit gutted as I've been mentally 'parklife-ing' dull speeches from people of years and I wish I'd thought of tweeting or filming it Grin

I'm not overly keen or Russell 'I-can-ring-your-granddad-to-take-the-piss-out-of-your-sex-life-but-don't-you-dare-mention-my-divorce-in-front-of-my-Mum' Brand.

Sometimes he can be very funny and makes a good (but bloody long winded point, but at other times he can be an arse and a hypocrite.

ghostyslovesheep · 06/11/2014 14:10

such as .... I'm interested on what is new about what he says?

What solutions does he offer? what are his views? all he seems to do is spout a lot of mixed arguments loudly and confusingly

Riverland · 06/11/2014 14:17

i don't think RB is one of the bad guys. Not worth denouncinga bit of vocab overdrive and waffle.his heart is in the right place.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 06/11/2014 14:24

I agree both that a lot of the (broadsheet) coverage of Brand is deeply snobby and that he is arrogantly spouting a lot of stuff he hasn't really thought through (on TV at least-haven't read the book).

But really, attack the ideas as much as you like, but not the man. I don't take to Russell Brand at all, but I really dislike seeing even half-baked political ideas shot down because of who is saying them, and not by proper argument. Which is a significant part of how we got into the dysfunctional politics mess that we're in today. Everyone is too lazy really to thrash ideas out any more, both within political parties and between them.

As Joschka Fischer famously said to Donald Rumsfeld 'You have to make the case!'

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 06/11/2014 14:25

Oh, but hypocritically (given what I've just posted) I did enjoythis put-down of Rusell Brand-he's the best character Sasha Baron-Cohen has come up with so far!

WitchyLeaks · 06/11/2014 14:47

Ha! I thought of poor Evan Davies [Newsnight] too Grin

He's excellent at highlighting some fundamental problems from a perspective a little outside what we generally get in the media. Almost everyone who does that gets flak. He's said sensible (to my mind) things about many issues, gordy, including the public's disenchantment with current politics, the fucked up nature of the money system, where we're going wrong tackling addictions, etc.
And you're right that most of what he says will not be novel/original, but he gets it heard in ways other people can't, and has clearly put thought into it.

What he doesn't (in my understanding) have is a coherent set of solutions. But who the hell does? At least he's thinking about it, and having some ideas.

KidLorneRoll · 06/11/2014 14:57

The thing is, if he had something worthwhile to say (which, as far as I can see, he comprehensively doesn't), he expresses it in such a fundamentally poor way he immediately polarises the people he is trying to talk (down) to.

He seems to think that using big long words he looked up in a dictionary makes him look clever. It doesn't. People who genuinely do know how to communicate properly with people to make complex ideas appear simple.

RB merely makes nonsensical ideas sound complex, and he is a massive hypocrite to boot. This is a man with so little credibility, why should people bother to pay attention to him.

Wowthishurtsalot · 06/11/2014 15:05

I love this.

Russell brand is a hypocritical fuckwit who has read a couple of a level sociology text books and is spouting pure bollocks that for some reason people are lapping up

Mans a twat

noddyholder · 06/11/2014 15:07

Its not about what he say imho more that he is speaking out at all. I know that there are lots of people who tirelessly campaign and are active in this way but like it or not he is high profile so people take notice. If it leads people to stop and think and maybe do their own research about what is going on in the world then its positive.

noddyholder · 06/11/2014 15:11

There are lots of twats giving us the benefit of their wisdom. You don't have to listen to him or read his book. I personally agree with a lot of what he says but I do hear it from people who aren't quite so hysterical in their delivery. He will appeal to my son's age group not really engaged with politics at all but love a debate!

Wowthishurtsalot · 06/11/2014 15:13

What does he say though?! I've yet to see an interview with him where he actually makes a point

He waffles and spits out long words and refuses to look at evidence that doesn't fit his bullshit agenda

noddyholder · 06/11/2014 15:14

Like a lot of politicians that people actually vote for and allow to govern us!

Wowthishurtsalot · 06/11/2014 15:20

No. Politicians evade personal questions by spouting policy and statistics.

noddyholder · 06/11/2014 15:23

You can't just say No like you are judge and jury! He can say what he likes don't listen if you don't like it. I loathe Obama and think he talks crap and is inept so when he is on TV I switch off. Lots of people love him though and I respect that We can't all agree thank god!

Wowthishurtsalot · 06/11/2014 15:29

Well you're the one so dismissive of my opinion so why can't I say no? I disagree with you, and that is my view.

As you say, thankfully we don't all agree because I fear if we did we could end up with a twat like brand or Farage or griffin in charge. Thank fuck enough people are educated enough to know who not to vote for and who not to listen to!

IrishBloodEnglishHeart · 06/11/2014 15:33

I must be getting old because if this crass effort is what passes as humour or satire today then standards are seriously dropping.

God I sound like my dad.
