To get pissed off at nativity sets?

Cundtbake · 03/11/2014 08:42

This is my second Christmas thread in a week Blush sorry to everyone who isn't quite ready for it.

DS has decided he'd like us to have a nativity set after admiring one in a shop recently. I'm not particularly religious but his dads family is, and besides I have a fondness for nice little nativity sets.

But as I search online I'm getting increasingly pissed off at these white skinned blond haired sets. Do people really believe that this whole group of middle eastern people were ivory skinned with rosy cheeks and fair hair? Oh apart from perhaps a token black wise man.

Does it bother anybody else?

I've decided to just make my own.

Loads and loads of non white-blonde nativity sets here. Only took one search, too ! Just for Cundtbake.

i bought mine from a christian shop .there skin and hair are more in keeping with the true origin .maybe there is one near you

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/11/2014 19:08

Because Jesus would have been Caucasian. There are blonde Israelis aren't there? Not impossible that Jesus was blonde though rather unlikely.

I've never seen Mary depicted as blonde. Always brunette.

Re Christmas free Jesus... Mine always are. I enjoy the tradition of sharing a nice meal and gifts with my family. Christianity plays no part in my life, nor does any other religion. Magic sky men aren't my thing.

Marmiteandjamislush · 03/11/2014 19:21

How old is DS? We made one, it was really easy.

Marmiteandjamislush · 03/11/2014 19:24

Can everyone stop being so rude about the religious element of Christmas please? It may not mean things to some of you but it does to others. Talking about 'magic men in the sky' and making sweeping statements about white male supremacy ect. Is really offensive and unnecessary. You can express an opinion respectfully you know.

AmeliaPeabody · 03/11/2014 19:26

Lots of the vintage nativity sets seemed to have blonde haired Marys for some reason...

AmeliaPeabody · 03/11/2014 19:26

Yes, 'magic men in the sky' is really not nice.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/11/2014 19:28

If it makes you feel any better Marmite I feel the same about all religions. I'm not picking on Christianity.

Marmiteandjamislush · 03/11/2014 19:29

There's still no need to be rude Alis

bigbluestars · 03/11/2014 19:30

I will do that when the church butts out of my life.

My children are subject to indoctrination. I am told we are sinners- even my babies are born into sin, and that as non believers we will burn in hell.

Very nice.

Downamongtherednecks · 03/11/2014 19:30

Okay Alis let's hear your similar take on Islam? I'm sure we'd find it enlightening.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/11/2014 19:32

Down

It is the same.

Marmiteandjamislush · 03/11/2014 19:33

Bigblue, don't tar all denominations with the same beliefs, Christianity has many shades. Your attitude does all a disservice. Rudeness is never necessary.

sickntiredtoo · 03/11/2014 19:36

So you are have the virgin birth, the angels , the magic star over the stable, and you are concerned that the skin colour is unrealistic!!!

Downamongtherednecks · 03/11/2014 19:38

But alis you won't write anything negative about Muslims' beliefs because you don't want to be accused of Islamophobia. So you aren't really treating all religions the same, are you? It's coming up to one of the holiest times of the year for Christians, so it might be nice to show some kindness and respect.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/11/2014 19:40

The thread isn't about Islam or anything related to it Hmm.

Marmiteandjamislush · 03/11/2014 19:43

I think MNHQ need to put something about talking about all religions respectfully in the guidelines to be honest. I've seen all beliefs disrespected quite nastily at times and I've not been here that long.

SingSongSlummy · 03/11/2014 19:46

For those interested in the Catalan defecating figure, it's called a 'Caganer' and appears in every nativity scene in the area - children try to spot it in each one! It's something to do with fecundity/fertility and the equality of all! You can also get the shitting log (Tio de Nadal) which is supposed to defecate sweets for children on Christmas eve......

darlingfascistbullyboy · 03/11/2014 19:46

Marmiteandjamislush - why?

Why should religious beliefs be respected? What's wrong with "Talking about 'magic men in the sky' and making sweeping statements about white male supremacy ect."?

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/11/2014 19:47

Religion in general has provided people the world over with some lovely traditions, which have become as much cultural as they are religious in many instances.

I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas this year whether you are celebrating it as a religion or cultural tradition.

Downamongtherednecks · 03/11/2014 19:48

hear, hear marmite.

AmeliaPeabody · 03/11/2014 19:48

virgin birth, the angels , the magic star over the stable

Wouldn't you say the above was a question of faith and personal beliefs.

The accuracy, and likelihood, of the bright blonde haired, blue eyed baby Jesus is another matter entirely, surely?

AmeliaPeabody · 03/11/2014 19:49

Sorry, I've only part quoted you there!

Marmiteandjamislush · 03/11/2014 19:51

So why shouldn't HQ allow racism, disablism, sexism, homophobia then? By that logic darling|

Downamongtherednecks · 03/11/2014 19:54

hear, hear marmite feeling like a cheerleader!
