To wish the BBC would make more family series for Sunday late afternoon TV?

Maybe it's me getting older but I was just thinking about the serials that used to be on the BBC around now on a Sunday. Narnia, Five Children and It, The Borrowers etc.

Is it wrong to wish for more series like that to enjoy with the DC so I don't have to endure quite so much CBeebies

I agree. It's a long time since anything like this was on TV on a Sunday. I remember watching the Snow Spider but missed the last episodes. I also loved Worzel Gummidge. Pity it's never repeated. And that one where the boy turned into a dog. Think that was on Fridays.

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 02/11/2014 18:09

Golly, I think I missed out, we grew up in the 70s and didn't watch any of this and we never, ever ate in front of the TV. All I remember watching during the daytime was sport and we've continued the same way, we do love it but definitely there's a gap for family dramas. Mind you I used to babysit for some children that watched the A Team and it was dreadful, never want to see that again.

Our family viewing now tends to be Strictly, GBBO, nature programmes etc.

CerealMom · 02/11/2014 18:09

Think BBC/ITV just don't make good drama for kids anymore (for a long time). Programmes like, Stig of the Dump, Moondial, CAB, Enter the Labyrinth, Tom's Midnight Garden, Box of Delights etc... Even USA/Canada don't make them anymore. Remember Degrassi High - unless we don't get them.

There's just nothing on telly to compare. Don't get me wrong, I love an episode of Adventure Time/Gumball but it's just not drama. And the stuff DS sometimes tunes into is just catch phrases, head tilts and finger snaps.

I too wish they were on. I loved the borrowers, phoenix and the carpet, and particularly liked the Return of the Antelope, as some of it was filmed near us and some friends were extras!

It would be great to have better family things.

Agggghast · 02/11/2014 18:11

Ballet Shoes was great! I also remember Sunday tea was served on a trolley and the only time in the week we didn't eat at the table, sandwiches and homemade cake except if it was really cold and we had sardines on toast!

CrumpleHornedSnorkack · 02/11/2014 18:12

Oh just remembered another, The Queen's Nose although that wasn't a Sunday one, and The Demon Headmaster.

I have a memory of one snowy day going sledging in the park and home to picnic tea (tuna fish sandwiches) watching A Little Princess.

Only time we were ever allowed to eat in the lounge was a Sunday tea!!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/11/2014 18:17

I used to love these. They should definitely bring the back.

I think they did the Children of the New Forest too.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 02/11/2014 18:45

Thursday's Child. Brilliant. YANBU.

BarmeeMarmee · 02/11/2014 18:48

YANBU. Would love more series like that-or even those as re-runs! Although I may be in the minority there.

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/11/2014 18:51

Most of those kinds of series have now migrated to CBBC. DS goes to bed at 4.30 as he's almost completely given up naps, DD goes at 6 as she gets up at 6.05 for school and seems to need 1.5 hours to get to sleep, something between 5 and 6 would be good. Smile

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 02/11/2014 18:51

CBBC still make good dramas,
They're just not shown on BBC1 anymore, just on the kids channel.

As a family we've enjoyed watching Wolfblood, Young Dracula and The Sparticle Mystery together (although that one bothered me as I overthought it too much!)

I too miss watching something all together like we did when I was young.

I might have to get Moondial on DVD, it was one of my favourite books and TV series, and my boys are into ghost stories atm.

parallax80 · 02/11/2014 18:54

YANBU. I've got the original Narnia on DVD, off to dust it down and put some crumpets on.

DMCWelshCakes · 02/11/2014 18:54

That's how we knew Christmas was coming. I loved them.

ImogenQuy · 02/11/2014 18:54

YANBU. I've just bought the DVD of the Box of Delights for this very reason! Worried it won't be as good as I remember, though.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/11/2014 19:02

off to dust it down and put some crumpets on.

The rule is only one episode though. Then you have to put it away and wait for next week Grin

Everything else in boxsets/on Netflix can be watched in block sessions.

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/11/2014 19:04

Of the series Always mentioned, my DD only likes Wolfblood, and she prefers to watch it in the mornings on a Saturday, all she'll watch before bed on CBBC is Scooby Doo when it's on, otherwise it's DVDs or she plays Angry Birds on my phone. Grin

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 02/11/2014 19:10

Totally agree.

ProfYaffle · 02/11/2014 19:11

Moondial £125 of your English pounds!!! Shock

ProfYaffle · 02/11/2014 19:15

My dds always enjoyed series like Merlin or Robin Hood, I'd like to see one of those coming back soon.

NoelleHawthorne · 02/11/2014 19:15

Modern family or simpsons

CrumpleHornedSnorkack · 02/11/2014 19:15

What?!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/11/2014 19:28

It'll be much cheaper elsewhere. Amazon has an odd pricing glitch in their system that occasionally throws up items for ridiculous sums of money.

CrumpleHornedSnorkack · 02/11/2014 19:30

Much cheaper
