To ask if anyone here frequented the Banshee club in Manchester in the late 80s

Posting here for traffic (sorry).

Anyone here a Goth in a past life?
I am watching the BBC four programme with all the goth stuff and it's made me really regret that I have few photos (and coherent memories) of my time as a student in Manchester and then at the Square Club in Cardiff.

Did you have a local Goth club, got any pictures or memories?

Halloween Topic!

Mine was a Pernod and black, then later southern comfort and lemonade.

The Smiths split before I could see them, the gits.

I have a recurring fantasy of them reforming and me getting front row tickets. Unlikely indeed, I know Sad. They are my ultimate favourites.

DuelingFanjo · 31/10/2014 22:54

PJ Harvey wasn't really goth was she, not in her early days anyway? I was a big fan but had come out of my Goth phase by then.

I used to go to Banshee in early 90s

'Twas ace

LoveVintage · 31/10/2014 22:55

JAMC are still one of my favourite bands. I saw them a few times in Glasgow.. Loved the Wedding Present too. And The Smiths. Am almost weeping with nostalgia. Am hoping Spear of Destiny will make an appearance.

MasqueradeWaltzer · 31/10/2014 22:56

I guess with Nick Cave/PJ Harvey it's more a 'dark themes' thing.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/10/2014 22:56

Southern Comfort here too (guess what I've been drinking tonight?!).

PJ Harvey bores me tbh, apart from Sheela-Na-Gig.

PlantsAndFlowers · 31/10/2014 22:57

Might know you by sight, but not ctually to talk to, heaven forfend!

Not a chatty 'being nice to strangers in a club' period of my life Smile.

That didn't start till I was in my 20's and Hard House came in!

LoveVintage · 31/10/2014 22:58

Some of the miming onTOTP is hilarious and most ungoth-like!

MasqueradeWaltzer · 31/10/2014 22:58

They'll never take me aliiiiive!

(For Love Vintage Grin).

Wasn't a fan of the nu-goth thing, must admit. DM's Personal Jesus didn't need covering imo.

Yambabe · 31/10/2014 22:58

You won't know me but I bet you would know my brother!

Bands he was in that played the Banshee regularly were White Trash, President Trash, The Idle Abused, Born Idle, Suicide Kicks, Sweet & Innocent - he was usually playing when the guy with the big dreads was djing.......

Pipbin · 31/10/2014 22:59

I was a Southern Comfort and lemonade girl too.
The chap with PJ Harvey who was shaking the shaky thing there was my music teacher at college.

DuelingFanjo · 31/10/2014 23:02

My banshee memories are really vague. Either the alcohol I was drinking or the fact that I went there twice a week every week for a couple of years and it all just became one big long night out.

I also went to the Ritz on a Monday night.

There was no Alien Sex Fiend on that programme, maybe they weren't that big?

whatever5 · 01/11/2014 00:42

I used to go to the Banshee in the late 80s but I wasn't a goth. It was a rock club on Wednesday nights. Like Seesense I also went to also the Playpen (Tuesdays), Pheonix (Sunday), UMIST (Saturday) and Swinging Sporran depending on the night of the week.

NerfHerder · 01/11/2014 01:34

I used to go to that club under the arch, but I cannot remember the name at all. They used to play Ministry, NIN, etc.
Ritz on Mondays. 42 street (????) another day.
Southern comfort & lemonade here too, until I was at university, then switched to lager.

Mission probably my most-seen band except for local bands we supported, and NMA.

I bet we all know one another by sight!

x2boys · 01/11/2014 01:46

Do you mean the one near the. Train station ? Was it is the bricknhouse?/we once saw Morrissey whilst we walking up from the Ritz to the taxi rank!

Darkesteyes · 01/11/2014 02:34

In Essex so never went to this club but am enjoying the prog now on BBC4. One of the very first posters i had on my bedroom wall as a kid was Strawberry Switchblade though i would have described them as pop.

ProfYaffle · 01/11/2014 02:53

I was more of a Jilly's/Rockworld girl too but went to Banshee a few times. I remember the place under the arches, accidentally went to a Rockabilly night there once.

daisyswirl · 01/11/2014 10:35

Oh my god thats a blast from the past! Met my husband in the banshee in 89..loved it! I was more of a rock chick with a side of goth. Been to ritz on a monday..banshee on thurs or friday (thursday better) and jillys on saturdays. Didn't go to the swinging sporran much but always remembered that you stuck to the floor ..classy..Grin

daisyswirl · 01/11/2014 10:37
