To think Carrie Bradshaw is an awful needy and clingy girlfriend?

So it always comes up on here what a shit friend she is but I just happened to watch an episode in season 1 (rarely ever watch that season) and omg she is the most annoying clingy girlfriend.

She finds out Big takes his mother to church every Sunday and asks to come along, despite seeing him throughout the week. He says no because its a special thing he has with his mother.

She then proceeds to go to the church anyway to spy.

At the end of the episode she demands that Big tell her shes the one after dating a couple of months.

This was just one episode!

I'm beginning to think Big wasn't as bad as I used to think he was.

If this was real and I posted in relationships I'd be warned about many red flags.

I honestly can't figure out what I loved so much about SATC in my 20's. She's really not an interesting character at all. Bad girlfriend is the least of it.

She is a clingy girlfriend, a shit friend...everything was always about me me me with her. I remember an episode when she'd gone to Miranda's as she was upset about something, Carrie started bleating on about her own problems and Miranda snapped saying something along the lines of "it's always about you".

YAsoooNBU - plus, even though I always hated Berger I thought she was so mean about the scrunchie thing. Honestly, talk about crapping on someone's achievement. No wonder he dumped her.

In the same season she found out Big was divorced and stalked out his ex wife just to meet her.

If I were Big I'd have binned her a lot sooner. He really did put up with so much crap from her.

I think the other three characters are what held it together really. I wasn't interested in Carrie and found her at best, slightly pitiful.

I think the later seasons suffered because they began to revolve around Carrie more and more and less about the others.

At the same time, I don't think you are really meant to always admire Carrie and her behaviour - I think you are meant to wince at some of the things she does.

I feel the same way about the 'Girls' TV show. People bang on and on about what awful people the 4 women in 'Girls' are - but I think that's the point of it, I'm fairly certain you are meant to find them repulsive.

In that episode she's clearly meant to look a bit stalkerish and obsessive. I never viewed it any other way.

My husband can't even stand the sight of SJP after watching all of around 12 seconds of SATC.

I loved it in my twenties! Carrie was a PITA but I liked Samantha taking her "neck massager" back to the shop:

And? I already said in my OP that I rarely watch that season so I forgot.

But Big is always played out as the bad guy, but she had a large part to play in their unhealthy relationship.

I'm not stupid. It's not like I've spent years rewatching the same episode and trying to dissect the hidden meaning.

OMG yes yes! I remember watching it for years with this growing sense of unease that she was actually an appalling person - I suppose because it was about female friendship and sexual liberation, and she was independent and successful, I kind of assumed she was a feminist role model at first.

The scales really fell from my eyes in one episode where she went round to Big's with macdonalds having decided it would be cute to take him macdonalds while dressed in a macdonalds-esque outfit. Hmm But she never checked with him and he was obviously busy and not interested - then she got really needy and pathetic that he wasn't overly enthusiastic. FFS get a life woman! It was painful to watch.

Big was a twat too mind, they deserved each other.

Agree Miranda was a much better character and the one I related to most by the end.

I saw an old episode the other day where she had a date with Berger and ran into Aidan who had a baby strapped to him in a sling.

After saying hi etc he says "I had a baby!" and her response was "I have a date!"

That was one of the many things that showed me how self absorbed that character was.

I much preferred the other three :)

Squoosh I don't want to watch a perfect flawless character, but it was depressing that the star of the show, whose stock-in-trade was making "pithy" observations on life and gender politics on her laptop, was actually such a needy, self-absorbed embarrassment. She could have been flawed while being strong, interesting and clear-sighted.

I remember an episode about Miranda taking Steve to a posh work do and payting for a posh suit for him because he was poor and only had an old hippy suit that he loved, but she said it wouldn't do. He felt emasculated and ducked out of the do and she ended up sorry that she hadn't valued him for who he was, suit and all.

Now both of them were a bit flawed in that storyline, but it was a much more interesting look at gender politics and what adult relationships are like, than anything Carrie got up to, mooning after and throwing herself at a rich, emotionally unavailable dickwad.

I know what you mean, but I'll always love seasons 3 and 4, LOVE the fashion in those. Hated Berger though. HATED him! He's in the film 'the conjoring' hating him helped distract me from the scary bits!

The best bit for me was when she'd blown all her money (around $40k I think) on designer shoes. She then couldn't afford rent/deposit or something similar.

Miranda and Samantha offered to bail her out financially. Charlotte didn't and Carrie went over her house and had a go at her for not offering her the money upfront! Shock

It was all just so stereotypical and they all had stereotypical "girl" jobs - that was what I - as a scientist - found so irritating. Oh and they all had so much money and all that designer clothes.....

Spent a bit of time living in New York and luckily didn't meet anyone like those creatures.

Carrie is not a likeable person, but I love the show. Just watched the one where Carrie's computer crashed and Miranda's mother died.

I did like the show - they discussed a lot of stuff that hadn't been on TV before, plus there were lots of great shots of New York hot spots.
