Aibu to think beautician should not have garlicky lunch

Wildpoppies · 22/10/2014 15:08

My appt at 2pm. She stank of garlic as she leaned over me for an hour. I said nothing but she must have been aware as she said sorry if she smells she had garlicky lunch.

YANBU.

I would have thought most salons would have rules about eating stinky food/smoking during work hours. Going to the beautician's is often as much for the experience as the end result. Garlic breath wouldn't make for a pleasant experience.

Fabulassie · 22/10/2014 15:13

Um... I guess YANBU. But maybe she didn't have a choice about what she ate that day (maybe someone ordered pizza or something.)

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 22/10/2014 15:17

Yes, YABU. Are you a vampire?

You can't dictate how people smell.

I work in care and I've had colleagues to smoke and them immediately lean over a patient. It's vile. But nothing can be said.

You just have to deal with it. I once had a BOey hairdresser. Just vote with your feet and don't go there again.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 22/10/2014 15:18

I think YABU too. I would have said something though. Or asked her if she wanted a mint....then said "Ooh I haven't got them with me after all...but I do think you need one!"

OttiliaVonBCup · 22/10/2014 15:20

I would hate that.
YANBU.

meanwindwanders · 22/10/2014 15:23

I tend to think it's only a smell!

tinylttletrotters · 22/10/2014 15:23

that would have made me heave , seriously , I can't stand garlicky breath

sunflower49 · 22/10/2014 15:28

YANBU. It wouldn't ruin my day but it would put me off going back.

My favourite foodstuff is hummus but I am careful about when I eat it in relation to when I am to be around others or in close proximity to anyone!

prettywhiteguitar · 22/10/2014 15:29

YABU
first world problems !! Honestly precious much ?

BringMeTea · 22/10/2014 15:40

YANBU. It is gross. (Misconduct?)

Nanny0gg · 22/10/2014 15:43

first world problems !! Honestly precious much ?

I hate this! Many problems on here are 'first world problems'.
Many people are worse off than others. I am assuming you never ever complain, because there will be someone, somewhere wondering what on earth you've got to complain about when they have it far worse than you do.

And OP, it's very unprofessional of her. And if I was being 'cared for' by someone who reeked of smoke, trust me, there would be a complaint going in.

sunflower49 · 22/10/2014 15:45

Well personally I don't feel like this, but to many, beauty treatments are a luxury or a relaxing thing, and they're not cheap (usually) so you expect them to be pleasant. Having somebody's garlicy breath on you ruins that.

And yes, it is a 'first world problem'. But it doesn't mean it isn't a problem at all.

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 22/10/2014 15:47

When I worked in Pizza Hut many years ago a free pizza during your shift was part of the package, but we were strictly banned from the garlic bread for this reason and we were much further away than beauticians are from people's faces. YANBU, it is very inconsiderate and likely to lose them business.

meanwindwanders · 22/10/2014 15:49

Misconduct?? Shock

WitchWay · 22/10/2014 15:50

I try really hard to avoid garlicky food before going to the dentist, including the night before! Occupational hazard for the dentist, yes, but even so I think it polite to do this.

YANBU.

meanwindwanders · 22/10/2014 15:52

Nanny

I work part time in care.

You could complain but the bottom line is, care is so poorly paid and the working conditions horrendous with the result that the choice is generally between poor care or no care.

Given that most people who need care do, well, need it, this means smoking is something that does happen.

At £6.90 an hour - or £1.73 which is what we typically get (15 minute calls) I am not sure frankly anyone has the right to tell me what I should or should not be eating for lunch!

To be honest where the beautician is concerned I wouldn't find it pleasant but wouldn't be fussed either.

Greyhound · 22/10/2014 15:52

That would have really spoiled the experience for me.

YABU

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 22/10/2014 15:55

Or asked her if she wanted a mint....then said "Ooh I haven't got them with me after all...but I do think you need one!"

Really? You would really say that? It sounds like something a 12 year old bully would say in the playground Hmm.

psyandsoc · 22/10/2014 15:57

YANBU I'm off for a spa treatment with a friend and if this happened to me I'd ask for another therapist. I'm sure she'd get the message.

Charitybelle · 22/10/2014 16:06

Urgh, I am really sensitive to smells so this would ruin my whole day (seriously)!
Had a dentist with bad breath, changed dentist. Would vote with my feet in any possible capacity over bodily smells I feel that strongly about it. DH thinks I'm nuts!
Personally would never use this salon again, although would be too chicken to complain as I wouldn't want to hurt the beauticians feelings.

NatashaRomanov · 22/10/2014 16:15

You should have said something. You could give feed back to the salon.
Surely most people visit the beautician for a bit of pampering. Pampering doesn't not included smelling someone's stinky breath!
My Mum is allergic to garlic, and now the smell makes her queasy. If someone was breathing it over her for an hour, she'd probably puke over them!

divingoffthebalcony · 22/10/2014 16:18

YANBU.

I have a really keen sense of smell and garlic breath for over an hour would make me feel sick. I personally would avoid garlicky or spicy lunches if I knew I was going to be breathing over clients afterwards. It's the considerate thing to do.

Whippet81 · 22/10/2014 16:21

YANBU

Honestly people astound me on here.

Disgusting - not like she wasn't aware either.

LoopyLoopyLoopy · 22/10/2014 16:21

I once had the lady doing my bikini wax apologise that she'd spilled mackerel all over her on her lunch break.

HangingBasketCase · 22/10/2014 16:22

Surely when your working in the beauty industry you be clean, tidy and well groomed at all times? Having stinky breath isn't acceptable when your working in close proximity with others anyway, but certainly not when your supposed to be leaning over customers to do treatments! She should have brushed her teeth or had a mint.
