To think it is very bad form to place mark a thread with nothing more than a full stop- particularly on a serious thread

This grips my shit at the best of times- it's not hard to work out where you are up to on a thread- but I can see on a fast moving, lighthearted thread it saves a bit of time for those who can't be arsed but I've just seen a serious thread (relationship over etc) with a fucking full stop place mark (apologies if it was a posting error but the poster hasn't put anything else on the thread).

It's really rude to do that IMO - it's like saying I have nothing of any value to add to this discussion but I really want to watch it all unfold but can't be bothered to work out where I was in the story- that'll be a story that's turning the OP's world upside down.

I can totally see that not everyone has anything of value to post on a thread but does want to read it as they gave an affinity with it but place marking in that situation is horrible.

Rant over.

Why don't people just hit the 'Watch thread' at the top of the page, other than saying 'marking place' or . ??

Why?

ItsNotEasyBeingGreen · 21/10/2014 19:01

You asked for that OP!
:)

I always wonder why people don't just click on 'watch this thread' instead.

MissBlennerhasset · 21/10/2014 19:01

I wonder why people do it, too. Why not just put it on their watch list? I don't believe everyone who puts a . is bumping, either.

Rude to who?

Bearbehind · 21/10/2014 19:05

The thread I was referring to had a post minutes before the offending full stop- it wasn't bumping.

What's wrong with writing 'bump' or 'marking place' if that's what you're doing?

It's like rubbernecking a car crash to do it on a serious thread.

"Grips my shit" is the new "boils my piss".
I also hate it when posters say "shamelessly marking my place" as though that made it any more acceptable.

SanityClause · 21/10/2014 19:06

That's true, MissB, because if you were bumping, you could either say "bump" (well, duh!) or just an encouraging, or sympathetic handholding type comment.

Only1scoop · 21/10/2014 19:06

'Grips my shit'

Oh my god that's worse than 'boils my piss' so

Bearbehind I agree with you totally. I was on a really awful Relationships thread the other night (which is still there and seems genuine) and some idiot did that, there's no excuse, either give the OP some support or rack off. If you must watch it like some TV drama, then put it on your 'threads I'm watching' but don't just do that, it is nasty. I have seen it on the most heartbreaking threads and it makes me want to reach through the screen and do damage.

DontWorrryBaldrickHasACunningP · 21/10/2014 19:16

YANBU, a few years ago I remember a thread where the OP had just walked in on her husband and another woman at it in the living room, she was posting from her car in an utter state. Many posters used the full stop to place mark on the thread. This womans life had just fallen apart and posters were watching her thread as if it was eastenders. IMO they should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 21/10/2014 19:18

Why don't people just bookmark and watch the thread?
