To get annoyed with swirly light things at the theatre

I don't know when this became A Thing but we've been to a couple of kids' theatre shows recently and the merchandise desk has been selling kinda lighting up swirly things (not sure what they're called. .. Sorry! ) The show we went to on Sat had kids using them all the way through, so constantly in my peripheral vision. I know you aren't meant to use flash photography or mobile phones at the theatre in case you distract the performers so why are these OK?! Can someone explain the point of them?

They sell these at our local panto too and I agree they are very annoying.

Really? In the theatre!? How distracting! We have those on bonfire night etc but really...YANBU! I would ask the management why they're "Ok" but other lights are not.

Yup, the same things as bonfire nights!
