To call our baby Huckleberry?

We are really struggling to think of boys' names for our second baby (due in 3 weeks.) We have no idea if it will be a girl or boy. The girl's name is all sorted but we already have one boy and have kind of peaked with naming him. My husband came up with Huckleberry and says he is not joking. I really like it but don't know if I'm brave enough. We are not American and feel it is a very American sounding name so maybe would be out of place. Also would it work for an adult? Would an adult named Huck sound like a complete tosser? I should point out that we live in a very alternative area with lots of unusual names around.

Please don't - his school years will be awful!

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 17/10/2014 21:24

Not sure Grin

Huckle, suckle, sucking on a berry...umm

ChippingInLatteLover · 17/10/2014 21:24

I blame your hormones - trust us - just do not do it!!

Now what is your DH's excuse?

What have you chosen if it's a DD?

...and if you don't mind saying, what is DS called?

RJnomore · 17/10/2014 21:24

Huck is nice.

But kids can be cruel.

Then again, you aren't at school for ever.

OutragedFromLeeds · 17/10/2014 21:25

What is going on with baby names at the moment? Elle pronounced Ellie, Deirdre and Huckleberry?! No. Just, no.

Although I'm kind of hoping the Deirdre OP and this one are the same. Deirdre and Huckleberry would be amazing sibling names.

PeppermintPasty · 17/10/2014 21:25

My friend's little boy is called Huckleberry, well, it's his middle name. Lots of people call him Huck and lots call him by his slightly more regular first name. I like it, it suits him. I don't see what's wrong with it, and I have grown up with a very unusual, pain in the arse first name.

TheLostPelvicFloorOfPoosh · 17/10/2014 21:26

I really love it

And yet, I probably wouldn't do it. Even though you live in an alternative area with lots of unusual names now, he may not when he is older, and may harbour the desire to be an accountant and have Barry from Last of the Summer Wine as his style guru. I'd keep it as a middle name.

smokeandfluff · 17/10/2014 21:27

I've heard worse. I love the book huck finn, huck is such a resourceful and human character. You could give him a 'normal' middle name, something like tom, so if he really hates the name when he gets older he can use his middle name

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 17/10/2014 21:28

have Barry from Last of the Summer Wine as his style guru Grin

I was going to say an incredibly sexy man with that name would be delicous but as you say, Barry! Grin

DramaAlpaca · 17/10/2014 21:28

Please don't, unless you want to set up your child for a lifetime of teasing.

doubleshotespresso · 17/10/2014 21:29

Am so sorry but Huckleberry would be a flat no. Just no.

And what does living in an "alternative area" have to do with selection of your baby name? Confused

ThatBloodyWoman · 17/10/2014 21:29

I think if you both love it, you should do it.

BaffledSomeMore · 17/10/2014 21:30

Go and stand in the park and bellow Huck! Off! as though ordering a small boy to get off the slide.
See how many funny looks you get.

Viviennemary · 17/10/2014 21:30

I think this must take the dubious honour of being the worst name I've heard yet on MN.

RattysPicnic · 17/10/2014 21:30

Are you worried your child will be known as 'Fuckleberry'? Or just 'Fuck'? Please say your surname doesn't start with a Q or a U?

divingoffthebalcony · 17/10/2014 21:30

Keep it as a pet name, because as a real name it's dreadful.

MorrisZapp · 17/10/2014 21:31

Oh don't be so bloody daft.

ThePinkOcelot · 17/10/2014 21:31

Nothing short of child abuse. Bloody awful!! Would your DH have liked to go through life called that?!

CarmineRose1978 · 17/10/2014 21:31

Yes. Yes you are. Unless you're a West Wing/Toby Zeigler fan.

Weasleyismyking · 17/10/2014 21:32

I like it. Blush
Go for it!
shrugs at all the haters Grin

Aked · 17/10/2014 21:32

We had a cat called Huckleberry. It really suited him. He wad a pretty cool cat.

Bettercallsaul1 · 17/10/2014 21:32

What is your other child's name, OP? Does it, erm, ,go with Huckleberry?

Rainicorn · 17/10/2014 21:34

Grin At MorrisZapp. My thoughts exactly.

Where I live, a huckle is a derogatory name for a gay person so it's a definite no from me.

SpaceKoala · 17/10/2014 21:35

I like it. My little boy has a name which is similar in a way, not a similar name, but unusual in the same sort of way, and frowned upon by some. But I like it, it suits him well, and has a shortened version which is more common. I would say go for it Smile

ChelsyHandy · 17/10/2014 21:36

I have a friend who named her two sons rather pretentious, twatty names. Basically they could be ponies' names. Its so obviously an attempt to make them stand out in the profession they are both in, its a bit too obvious and I hope they both manage to turn out extra nice genuine people to compensate for the wanky first image their names will create amongst the average person who isn't interested in whatever aim there parents had in naming them.
