To call our baby Huckleberry?

We are really struggling to think of boys' names for our second baby (due in 3 weeks.) We have no idea if it will be a girl or boy. The girl's name is all sorted but we already have one boy and have kind of peaked with naming him. My husband came up with Huckleberry and says he is not joking. I really like it but don't know if I'm brave enough. We are not American and feel it is a very American sounding name so maybe would be out of place. Also would it work for an adult? Would an adult named Huck sound like a complete tosser? I should point out that we live in a very alternative area with lots of unusual names around.

I also wished I'd been a bit more daring... went for the hard to spell name as a middle name but in hindsight, it probably would have been fine as a first name.

OP, Huckleberry wouldn't have stood out from the crowd at the baby groups I used to go to when DS was new and we lived in London. Names i can think of offhand included Antarctica, Ferdinand, Ace, Hebe, Thiago, Endellion, Kizzy, and loads I can't now remember. I doubt very much they'll all be kicked weeping around the playground on a daily basis, or debarred from being high court judges.

I knew a boy called Falcon. (After Robert Falcon Scott the explorer). It was actually his middle name, but he much preferred it to the rather boring James, his first name. Children do not automatically loathe unusual names.

bealos Perseus is a great name. Also, you get your own meteorological event as part and parcel. Grin

OP i quite like Huck. Huckleberry on the BC, but everyone always refers to him in short. Sounds like someone I would go rambling around the Scottish highlands with! 'On this week's Ramblings, Clare Balding walks the Scottish lochs with committed conservationist, Huck McLeod.'

Just wanted to say Huckleberry is one of my favourite boys' name ever! Not sure I'd be brave enough to use it but I do love it! Also love Iago Alis -great taste!

netty7070 · 21/10/2014 21:38

Didn't Alex James call one of his kids Geronimo? is this irrelevant?
Huckleberry is not good, sorry.

LeoandBoosmum · 23/10/2014 03:18

I honestly wouldn't. You owe it to this child to think of something else - remember he has to carry this name through life!
Might I offer Amyas as an alternative - I have NO idea where it comes from but I knew one in my youth... He was tall, handsome, incredibly bright, fit and good-natured! :) He carries the name off well...though even he couldn't have pulled off Huckleberry!
I like some one else's idea here of Rowan as an alternative...there aren't many about and it'sa good strong name!
BTW, I am really curious as to what your girls' name is now :)

LeoandBoosmum · 23/10/2014 03:19

Pronounced Am-mee-ass (in case you're wondering)

Ooh, ByeByeButterfly, I love Silas and Ichabod (since I heard Ichabod in Sleepy Hollow). Also, might add Amos to your list :)

Espii · 24/10/2014 10:55

very American! I like american names though! Chip, Finn/Fyn, Kit _
although I wouldn't call my son Huckleberry. I wanted to call mine Balthazar. Dp's down for that.

TheRealThursdayNext · 24/10/2014 12:35

Yes, YABU

Lambzig · 24/10/2014 13:16

DH talked me into giving DS a more popular name than we gave DD. I like DS's name, but two years on I hate that so many other boys are called it. I wish I had stuck to my guns on something more unusual (I would have preferred Magnus, Lysander, Leander or Rupert JFI).

If you really like it, be brave.

You'll all be glad to know, the baby is a girl. Rachel Poppy Ffion was born yesterday.

Oh, that is lovely, queenmools! Many congratulations to you and baby Rachel! That is a lovely name!

(Many years from now you can regale her with her very good luck in having XX chromosomes!) Grin

I do love a story with a happy ending. Smile
